New iodide-based molten salt systems for high temperature molten salt batteries

Novel multi-component molten salt systems containing iodides, LiF-LiBr-Lil, LiF-NaBr-Lil, and LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Lil, were investigated for use as electrolytes in high temperature molten salt batteries to improve the discharge rate-capability. The iodide-based molten salts showed higher ionic conductivity (similar to 3 S cm(-1) at 500 degrees C) than conventional LiCl-KCl, and had low enough melting points (below 400 degrees C that can be used in practical high temperature molten salt batteries. The iodide-based salts showed instability at temperatures higher than 280 degrees C in dried air. The decomposition mechanism of iodide-based molten salts was discussed, and it was found that elimination of oxygen from the environment is effective to stabilize the iodide-based molten salts at high temperatures. SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF TRACE AMOUNTS OF IODIDE BY ITS CATALYTIC EFFECT ON THE CHLORPROMAZINE-HYDROGEN PEROXIDE REACTION

A catalytic photometric method for the determination of trace amounts of iodide is proposed. In the presence of iodide, chlorpromazine is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide in a sulfuric acid solution to form a red intermediate, which is further oxidized to a colorless compound. The reaction is followed by measuring the increase in the absorbance at 525 nm; the maximum absorbance is obtained on an absorbance-time curve at a given reaction time. Since the maximum value increases with an increase in the iodide concentration, this value is used as a parameter for the iodide determination. Under the optimum experimental conditions (1.0X10(-3) M chlorpromazine, 1.5 M sulfuric acid, 2.0 M hydrogen peroxide, 30-degrees-C), iodide in the range 0.2-10-mu-g l-1 can be determined. The relative standard deviations are 0.8, 2.6 and 4.2% for 6.0, 2.0 and 0.6-mu-g l-1 iodide, respectively. Although iodate shows the same catalytic effect as iodide at the same concentration as iodine, free iodine shows a somewhat lower catalytic effect. The procedure has been applied to the determination of iodide in natural water samples.

Synergistic Copper-Catalyzed Reductive.Aminocarbonylation of Alkyl Iodides with Nitroarenes

We have developed a Cu-catalyzed reductive aminocarbonylation of alkyl iodides using nitroarenes as the nitrogen source. The reaction proceeds with a single copper catalyst playing dual roles of synergistically mediating both carbonylation of alkyl iodides and reduction of nitroarenes, providing acyl iodides and anilines as possible reactive intermediates that then do amide coupling spontaneously. A diverse of alkyl iodides with nitroarenes range of secondary N-aryl alkylamides are accessible from a variety of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides using this method.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs): Contamination in food, humans and dietary exposure

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) have been recognised as environmental pollutants for decades but their occurrence in food has only recently been reported. They elicit the same type of toxic response as analogous polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) with similar potencies and effects, and share similar origins – inadvertent production during combustion and occurrence as by-products in industrial chemicals. Surprisingly, PBDD/Fs have received considerably less attention than PCDD/Fs, perhaps because determination requires a higher degree of analytical competence, a result of the higher adsorptivity and lability associated with carbon-bromine bonding. For most populations, the principal exposure pathway is dietary intake. The PBDD/F toxicity arising from occurrence in foods has often been expressed as toxic equivalents (TEQs) using the same scheme developed for PCDD/Fs. This approach is convenient, but resulting TEQ estimates are more uncertain, given the known differences in response for some analogous congeners and also the different patterns of PBDD/F occurrence confirmed by the newer data. Further studies to consolidate potency factors would help to refine TEQ estimates. Characteristically, most foods and human tissues show more frequent and higher PBDF concentrations relative to PBDDs, reflecting major source patterns. Occurrence in food ranges from <0.01 to several thousand pg/g (or up to 0.3 pg TEQ/g whole weight) which is comparable to PCDD/F occurrence (Sigma PBDD/F TEQs are underestimated as not all relevant congeners are included). Plant based foods show higher PBDD/F: PCDD/F TEQ ratios. Reported PBDD/F dietary intakes suggest that some population groups, particularly young children, may exceed the revised tolerable weekly intake for dioxin-like contaminants (2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week), even for mean consumption estimated with lower bound data. It is evident that the omission of PBDD/Fs from the TEQ scheme results in a significant underestimation of the cumulative toxicity and associated risk arising from this mode of action. Global distribution and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human blood and breast milk: A quantitative meta-analysis of studies published in the period 2000-2019

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of flame-retardants that are found throughout the human body. However, global trends and diversity of the concentrations in human body and the potential risks remain largely unresolved. Based on published data during 2000-2019, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis to understand the burden and risks of PBDEs in humans and their spatiotemporal variations. The report provides a global picture of PBDE concentrations in human blood and breast milk. We found the levels of body PBDE burden in the North American population were higher than those from Asia and Europe. However, high concentrations of blood PBDEs in occupational population from Asia were observed, largely because of poorly controlled e-waste recycling operations. Pentaand deca-BDE were the main contributors in North America and Asia, respectively, reflecting the difference in the production and use of these chemicals. On a global scale, no substantial decreases in the concentrations of PBDEs in the blood and breast milk were observed, although most of the chemicals have been phased out. The results suggested that humans will be exposed to PBDEs with relatively high concentrations in a certain period because of the legacy in products and the environmental media. And the potential health risks necessitate careful study in the future. Our results also remind that the uses of degradation-resistant chemicals should be attached great importance to their safety.

Effect of laying sequence and selection of maternal tissues in assessment of maternal transfer of organohalogenated contaminants during chicken egg formation: A pilot study

Many studies have reported maternal transfer of organic contaminants in oviparous species, with inconsonant results. Egg-laying sequence and selected maternal tissues may impact on assessment of potential maternal transfer of contaminants. Here, this hypothesis was verified by exposing chickens (Gallus domesticus) to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and dechlorane plus (DPs). Concentrations in eggs laid during exposure exhibited periodic fluctuations (conforming to egg-laying cycles) and a decreasing trend during depuration. Fluctuation patterns of DPs and BDE209 differed from those of other compounds. The PBDE congener profiles in eggs were dominated by BDE209 during exposure and by BDE100 and 153 during depuration. The abundance of PCB congener (CB138) which is recalcitrant to metabolism increased with laying sequence. Maternal transfer potential was negatively correlated (P = 0.0014, R-2 = 0.7874) to the log K-OW of chemicals (log K-OW >7) when the muscle, heart, lung, or stomach was used. No correlations were found when the liver, fat, kidneys, or intestine was used (log K-OW >7), although DPs and BDE209 showed the highest maternal transfer potential. Different fluctuation patterns of DPs and BDE209 in eggs and increased abundance of BDE209 in eggs laid in the initial egg-laying period imply that the liver, fat, kidney, or intestinal tissues could be more appropriate in assessing maternal transfer of the target analytes. Bioactive Peptides from Sesame Meal for Broiler Chickens: Its Influence on the Serum Biochemical Metabolites, Immunity Responses and Nutrient Digestibility

This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effects of bioactive peptides derived from sesame meal (BPSM), avilamycin as an antibiotic and mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) as a prebiotic supplementation on the some serum metabolites, immune response, and ileal nutrient digestibility of broiler chickens. A total of 300 broiler chickens were randomly placed in 6 treatments with 5 replicates of 10 birds each, for 32 days. The experimental treatments consisted of a basal corn-soybean meal or control diet, control diet + 10 mg/kg avilamycin, control diet + 2 gr/kg MOS, control diet + 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg BPSM. According to the results, dietary treatments had no effects on the serum concentration of IgG and IgM (immunity indices), cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and enzyme activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as an index for liver health (P > 0.05). While the blood concentration of albumin increased in broiler chickens fed diet containing 100 mg/kg BPSM (P < 0.05).In nutrient digestibility, addition of 100 mg/kg of BPSM and MOS increased the ileal digestibility coefficients of crude protein and ether extract in broiler chickens (P < 0.05). Likewise, ileal digestibility of vital amino acids including histidine, methionine, and tyrosine improved in broiler chickens, which received 100 mg/kg BPSM diet, while threonine digestibility increased in broilers fed MOS diet (P < 0.05). Body weight gain and food conversion ratio improved (P < 0.05) in the birds received MOS and 100 mg/kg BPSM, respectively. Considering the results of this study, it is concluded that BPSM can be used as a diet supplement in broiler chickens with no negative effect on the immune response and nutrient digestibility. Isolation and identification of a novel allelochemical from Ruppia maritima extract against the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa

Because submerged plants have allelopathic inhibition against the cyanobacterial growth in the nature, the extracts of the submerged plants could be an environment-friendly and efficient alternative for controlling cyanobacterial bloom. A growth inhibitor of Microcystis aeruginosa was identified from the Ruppia maritima extracts by a two-step extraction. In the first step, Ruppia maritima was extracted by methanol, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether, respectively. The petroleum ether extract with the best algal inhibition effect (EC50 = 92.82 mg L-1) was further isolated, using column chromatography eluted with petroleum ether and ethyl acetate mixtures in volume ratios of 10:1, 7:1, 5:1, 3:1, 1:1 and 0:1 (v:v). Based on the GC-MS analysis results, 2,2′-methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol) (AO 2246) was identified as the most effective compound with an EC50 of 7.80 mg L-1. The further bioassay experiments using Chlorella vulgaris and zebrafish indicated the cyanobacterial-specific allelopathic effect and low acute toxicity of AO 2246. The effect of AO2246 may be also long-acting in the natural environments, as the 28-day illumination of AO2246 had little influence on its cyanobacteria inhibition efficacy. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
