This study was carried out to investigate the risks of simultaneous exposure to pesticide residues and bacteria contaminants in locally produced fresh vegetables and vegetables in Tanzania. A total of 613 samples were analyzed for pesticide residues, out of which 250 were also analyzed for bacterial contamination. Overall, 47.5% had pesticide residues, 74.2% exceeded Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs). Organophosphorus (95.2%), organochlorines (24.0%), pyrethroids (17.3%), and carbamates (9.2%) residues dominated. MRL values were mostly exceeded in tomatoes, onions, watermelons, cucumbers, Chinese cabbage, and sweet paper. Tetramethrin (0.0329-1.3733 mg/kg), pirimiphos-methyl (0.0003-1.4093 mg/kg), permethrin (0.0009-2.4537 mg/kg), endosulfan (beta) (0.0008-2.3416 mg/kg), carbaryl (0.0215-1.5068 mg/kg), profenofos (0.0176-2.1377 mg/kg), chlorpyrifos (0.0004-1.2549 mg/kg) and dieldrin (0.0011-0.5271 mg/kg) exceeded MRLs. The prevalence of bacteria contamination was high (63.2%). Enterobacter (55.6%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (32.4%), E. coli (28.2%), Citrobacter (26.8%), Klebsiella oxytoca (14.8%), and Salmonella (7.7%) were isolated. Furthermore, 46.4% tested positive for both pesticide residues and bacterial contaminants. Vegetables from farms (60.7%) contained more dual contaminants than market-based vegetables (41.8%). This may have resulted from excessive pesticide use and unhygienic handling of fresh fruits and vegetables at production level. Binary logistic regression showed that fresh fruits and vegetables with pesticide residues were 2.231 times more likely to have bacteria contaminants (OR: 2.231; 95% CI: 0.501, 8.802). The contamination levels of pesticide residues and bacterial contaminants could be perceived as a serious problem as most fresh fruits and vegetables recorded values of pesticide residues far above the MRLs with pathogenic bacteria isolated in higher proportions. MRLs was higher in most vegetables consumed raw or semi-cooked such as watermelons, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, onion and sweet paper. There is an urgent need to develop pesticide monitoring and surveillance systems at farmer level, educating farmers and promoting the use of greener pesticides to mitigate the health effects of pesticides and bacterial contaminants.

I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Cationic surfactant-directed synthesis of hollow Beta zeolite with hierarchical structure published in 2019. Safety of Benzyl ether, Reprint Addresses Xi, HX (corresponding author), South China Univ Technol, Sch Chem & Chem Engn, Guangzhou 510640, Guangdong, Peoples R China.; Liu, BY (corresponding author), Guangdong Univ Technol, Sch Chem Engn & Light Ind, Guangzhou 510006, Guangdong, Peoples R China.. Hollow Beta zeolite with hierarchical meso/microporous has been synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method by using a designed cationic surfactant of N-2-p-N-2 as soft-template. The structure-directing ability of N-2-p-N-2 was studied by the DFT calculations. The hollow Beta zeolite with a hierarchical structure was characterized by a combination of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The structural characterization suggested that the positively charged quaternary ammonium group can interact with the anionic aluminosilicate species to induce the formation of Beta zeolites. The hollow zeolites possess the large inner cavity and hierarchical structure, which can significantly reduce diffusion limitations and facilitate accessibility of the active sites. FTIR spectra of 2,6-di-tertbutylpyridine results indicated that the hollow Beta zeolite with hierarchical structure provided increased external surface acid sites and exhibited superior catalytic property in the benzylation of benzyl alcohol with mesitylene. Such hollow zeolite with hierarchical structure has great potential in catalysis involving large molecules.

In this work it is shown a precise way to optimize the heat generation in high viscosity magnetic colloids, by adjusting the Neel relaxation time in core/shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, for magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) applications. To pursue this goal, Fe3O4/ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized with 8.5 nm mean core diameter, encapsulated in a shell of similar to 1.1 nm of thickness, where the Zn atomic ratio (Zn/(Zn + Co) at%) changes from 33 to 68 at%. The magnetic measurements are consistent with a rigid interface coupling between the core and shell phases, where the effective magnetic anisotropy systematically decreases when the Zn concentration increases, without a significant change of the saturation magnetization. Experiments of MFH of 0.1 wt% of these particles dispersed in water, in Dulbecco modified Eagles minimal essential medium, and a high viscosity butter oil, result in a large specific loss power (SLP), up to 150 W g(-1), when the experiments are performed at 571 kHz and 200 Oe. The SLP was optimized adjusting the shell composition, showing a maximum for intermediate Zn concentration. This study shows a way to maximize the heat generation in viscous media like cytosol, for those biomedical applications that require smaller particle sizes.

Magnetic core-shell nanostructures offer a viable solution for tunable magnetism via nanoscale exchange interactions in a single-component unit. A typical synthetic approach for monodisperse bimagnetic ferrite core-shell nanostructures employs the seed-mediated growth method using the heating-up process. Understanding magnetic core-shell interface formation and their interactions is crucial; however, the magnetical persistence of the pristine core component during the heating-up process is unclear. Here, we elucidate the enhancement mechanism of magnetic anisotropy when the hard-soft core-shell nanostructures are formed with the ultrathin shell layer. The heating-up effect on the core component exhibits the coordination change of ligand chemisorption with surface metal ions, which leads to a substantial increase in surface anisotropy due to enhanced spin-orbit couplings. We further demonstrate that the selection of metal precursors and surfactants for additional shell layer formation is important. The kinetic of the shell formation rate by their thermolysis and atomic-scale surface etching by the surfactant led to the disordering of surface spins on the core parts. Our observations provide the underlying mechanism of high anisotropic magnetism while bimagnetic ferrite core-shell interface formation and the voyage of synthetic procedures for the additional shell layer are critical to an outcoming magnetism.

A copper-catalysed hydroxylation of diaryliodoniums to generate phenols and diaryl ethers is reported. This method allows the synthesis of diversely functionalized phenols under mild reaction conditions without the need for a strong inorganic base or an expensive noble-metal catalyst. Significantly, convenient application of diaryliodoniums is demonstrated in the preparation of diaryl ethers in a one-pot operation.

Optical tissue clearing using dibenzyl ether (DBE) or BABB (1 part benzyl alcohol and 2 parts benzyl benzoate) is easy in application and allows deep-tissue imaging of a wide range of specimens. However, in both substances, optical clearing and storage times of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-expressing specimens are limited due to the continuous formation of peroxides and aldehydes, which severely quench fluorescence. Stabilisation of purified DBE or BABB by addition of the antioxidant propyl gallate efficiently preserves fluorescence signals in EGFP-expressing samples for more than a year. This enables longer clearing times and improved tissue transparency with higher fluorescence signal intensity. The here introduced clearing protocol termed stabilised DISCO allows to image spines in a whole mouse brain and to detect faint changes in the activity-dependent expression pattern of tdTomato.

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) can be used as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal enhancement agents for petroleum exploration. This enhancement effect is uniform if SPIONs are monodisperse in size and in composition; yet it is challenging to synthesize mono disperse particles that do not aggregate in high salinity petroleum brine. Here, we report a method to synthesize individual SPIONs coated with tunable surface coating densities of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (pAMPS) with a catechol end-group (pAMPS*). To establish parameters under which pAMPS*-coated SPIONS do not aggregate, we compared computational predictions with experimental results for variations in pAMPS* chain length and surface coverage. Using this combined theoretical and experimental approach, we show that singly dispersed SPIONs remained stabilized in petroleum brine for up to 75 h with high surface density pAMPS*.

The dependence of polymer film transparency on different kinds of planar orientations of nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) is described. The two polymers exhibit opposite behavior: film transparency is improved for sPS and PPO by orientations of the chain axes of the NC phases being parallel (c(parallel to)) and perpendicular (c(perpendicular to)) to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be rationalized by the negative and positive birefringence of sPS and PPO chains, respectively. In fact, to maximize transparency, the refractive index of the NC phase along the perpendicular to the film plane has to be increased to come closer to that of the corresponding amorphous phase. This can be pursued by controlling the orientation of the NC phases and hence of the associated refractive index ellipsoids.

Co-infection of malaria and tuberculosis, although not thoroughly investigated, has been noted. With the increasing prevalence of tuberculosis in the African region, wherein malaria is endemic, it is intuitive to suggest that the probability of co-infection with these diseases is likely to increase. To avoid the issue of drug-drug interactions when managing co-infections, it is imperative to investigate new molecules with dual activities against the causal agents of these diseases. To this effect, a small library of quinolone-thiosemicarbazones was synthesised and evaluated in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causal agents of malaria and tuberculosis, respectively. The compounds were also evaluated against HeLa cells for overt cytotoxicity. Most compounds in this series exhibited activities against both organisms, with compound 10, emerging as the hit; with an MIC90 of 2 mu M against H37Rv strain of M. tuberculosis and an IC50 of 1 mu M against the 3D7 strain of P. falciparum. This study highlights quinolone-thiosemicarabazones as a class of compounds that can be exploited further in search of novel, safe agents with potent activities against both the causal agents of malaria and tuberculosis.
