Five different copper-oxide nanocrystals were prepared by colloidal synthesis to form either cubic, octahedral, rhombic dodecahedral, truncated cubic, or fluffy sphere structures. These Cu-oxide nanocrystals were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-vis. The SEM images show that the Cu2O nanocrystals are relatively uniform and all the crystals have a particle mean diameter below 1000 nm. The smallest particle mean diameter is 411 nm for the rhombic dodecahedral crystals, while the octahedral crystal displays the largest particle mean diameter of 864 nm. The XPS results indicate that the copper is primarily Cu(I)in Cu2O, but some as Cu(II)are also present. The apparent optical band gap energies could be determined from the optical properties of the five Cu-oxide nanocrystals, using the classical Tauc equation. The apparent optical band gap energies ranged between 2.04 and 2.14 eV. The Ullmann C-O coupling reaction was used to investigate the catalytic performance of the Cu-oxide nanocrystals. The fluffy sphere gave the highest % conversion, while the rhombic dodecahedral showed the lowest conversion.

The catalytic regioselective C-H silylation of a wide range of alkoxy-substituted benzene derivatives with primary hydrosilane was achieved by the use of scorpionate-supported calcium benzyl complex [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(p-CH2C6H4Me)(THP)] (1) (Tp(Ad,iPr) = hydrotris(3-adamantyl-5-isopropylpyrazolyl)borate, THP = tetrahydropyran) as the precatalyst. This protocol offers an atom-efficient and straightforward method for the synthesis of a variety of silyl-substituted aromatic ether derivatives without a hydrogen acceptor and free of transition metal. Calcium anisyl complexes [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(o-MeO-m-Br-C6H3)] (5) and [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(o-Me-OCH2C6H4)] (6), proposed as the catalytic reaction intermediates, were isolated and structurally characterized.

Environmental contamination by organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and plasticizers are environmental concerns. In this study, 18 OPFRs were analyzed in sediment and bivalves collected from 50 locations along the Korean coast to assess occurrence, geographical distribution, contamination source, and bioaccumulation potential. Tris(1-chloro-2-propanyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) were highly detected (> 80%) OPFRs in sediment and bivalves. Total concentrations of OPFRs and plasticizers in sediment and bivalves ranged from 2.18 to 347 ng/g dry weight and from 6.12 to 206 ng/g dry weight, respectively, which were within the ranges reported for previous studies. Sedimentary organic carbon was a primary factor governing the OPFR distribution. Concentrations of OPFRs and plasticizers in sediments from harbor zones were significantly higher than non-harbor zones, indicating that shipping activity is a contamination source of OPFRs and plasticizers in coastal environments. Biota-sediment accumulation factors < 1 for several OPFRs indicated limited potential for bioaccumulation. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), present in the environment, animals, and humans. Their levels, distribution, and human exposure have been studied extensively, and over the last decade, various legal measures have been taken to prohibit or minimize their production and use due to the increasing amount of evidence of their harmful effects on human and animal health. Our aim here was to make a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the levels and distribution of PBDEs in the aquatic environment, air, and soil, in indoor dust, and in humans. To fulfill this, we searched through Web of Science for literature data reported in the last five years (2015-2019) on levels of at least six key PBDE congeners in abovementioned matrices. According to our summarized data, significant PBDE mass concentrations/fractions are still being detected in various sample types across the world, which implies that PBDE contamination is an ongoing problem. Secondary sources of PBDEs like contaminated soils and landfills, especially those with electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), represent a particular risk to the future and therefore require a special attention of scientists.

A mild and efficient protocol for O-arylation of alcohols and phenols (ROH) by triarylsulfonium triflates was developed under transition-metal-free conditions. Various alcohols, including primary, secondary and tertiary, and phenols bearing either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups on the aryl rings were smoothly converted to form the corresponding aromatic ethers in moderate to excellent yields. The reactions were conducted at 50 or 80 degrees C for 24 h in the presence of a certain base and showed good functional group tolerance. The base-mediated arylation with asymmetric triarylsulfonium salts could selectively transfer the aryl groups of sulfoniums to ROH, depending on their inherent electronic nature. The mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction might proceed through the nucleophilic attack of the in situ formed alkoxy or phenoxy anions at the aromatic carbon atoms of the C-S bonds of triarylsulfonium cations to furnish the target products.

Food volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis is a useful tool in authentication and classification processes, but, to date, the analysis of wheat VOCs is still little explored. In this study a method of analysis based on solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was optimized by testing different types of fibers, sample preparation methods and amounts, extraction temperatures and times, desorption times and oven programs. The analysis was applied to six wheat cultivars harvested in different areas, and permitted to identify 158 VOCs, of which 98 never found before. A principal component analysis performed on the dataset showed that the area of cultivation accounted for the highest source of variability. Partial least squares analysis permitted to correctly classify wheats based on their cultivation area and species, and to identify the most discriminant VOCs. These results are promising for the study of the influence of geographical origin on wheat quality.

We report herein the possibility to perform the hydrosilylation of carbonyls using actinide complexes as catalysts. While complexes of the uranyl ion [UO2](2+) have been poorly considered in catalysis, we show the potentialities of the Lewis acid [UO2(OTf)(2)] (1) in the catalytic hydrosilylation of a series of aldehydes. [UO2(OTf)(2)] proved to be a very active catalyst affording distinct reduction products depending on the nature of the reductant. With Et3SiH, a number of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes are reduced into symmetric ethers, while (Pr3SiH)-Pr-i yielded silylated alcohols. Studies of the reaction mechanism led to the isolation of aldehyde/uranyl complexes, [UO2(OTf)(2)(4-Me2N-PhCHO)(3)], [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf)(2)(PhCHO)](n), and [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf(kappa(1)-OTf)(PhCHO)(2)](2), which have been fully characterized by NMR, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

Complex metabolite mixtures are challenging to unravel. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a widely used and sensitive technique for obtaining structural information of complex mixtures. However, just knowing the molecular masses of the mixture’s constituents is almost always insufficient for confident assignment of the associated chemical structures. Structural information can be augmented through MS fragmentation experiments whereby detected metabolites are fragmented, giving rise to MS/MS spectra. However, how can we maximize the structural information we gain from fragmentation spectra? We recently proposed a substructure-based strategy to enhance metabolite annotation for complex mixtures by considering metabolites as the sum of (bio)chemically relevant moieties that we can detect through mass spectrometry fragmentation approaches. Our MS2LDA tool allows us to discover – unsupervised – groups of mass fragments and/or neutral losses, termed Mass2Motifs, that often correspond to substructures. After manual annotation, these Mass2Motifs can be used in subsequent MS2LDA analyses of new datasets, thereby providing structural annotations for many molecules that are not present in spectral databases. Here, we describe how additional strategies, taking advantage of (i) combinatorial in silico matching of experimental mass features to substructures of candidate molecules, and (ii) automated machine learning classification of molecules, can facilitate semi-automated annotation of substructures. We show how our approach accelerates the Mass2Motif annotation process and therefore broadens the chemical space spanned by characterized motifs. Our machine learning model used to classify fragmentation spectra learns the relationships between fragment spectra and chemical features. Classification prediction on these features can be aggregated for all molecules that contribute to a particular Mass2Motif and guide Mass2Motif annotations. To make annotated Mass2Motifs available to the community, we also present MotifDB: an open database of Mass2Motifs that can be browsed and accessed programmatically through an Application Programming Interface (API). MotifDB is integrated within ms2lda.org, allowing users to efficiently search for characterized motifs in their own experiments. We expect that with an increasing number of Mass2Motif annotations available through a growing database, we can more quickly gain insight into the constituents of complex mixtures. This will allow prioritization towards novel or unexpected chemistries and faster recognition of known biochemical building blocks.

Dynamic self-assembly represents an effective approach to form energy-dissipative structures by introducing interactions among multiple building blocks with a continuous energy supply. Time-dependent magnetic fields are treated as convenient energy inputs to construct such a dynamic self assembled system. The induced interactions can be further tuned by modulating the input field, resulting in a diversity of assembled patterns. However, formation of a functional dynamic pattern with controllability remains a challenge. Herein, we report the formation and pattern control of dynamically self-assembled magnetic droplets at an air liquid interface, energized by a precessing magnetic field. The formation process involves the assembly of magnetic microparticles into particle chains inside droplets, and then highly ordered patterns are generated by balancing the induced interactions among droplets. By modulating the input field, the interactions and collective behaviors are adjusted and the pattern can be reversibly tuned, i.e., expand and shrink, in a controlled manner. Furthermore, the assembled droplets are able to be steered in two-dimensional as an entity by applying a magnetic field gradient. Utilizing dynamic pattern control and steerability of the assembled structure, cargoes are successfully trapped, transported, and released in a noncontact fashion, indicating that the dynamically assembled droplets can act as a reconfigurable untethered robotic end-effector for manipulation.
