Lignin valorization is significantly influenced by the degrees of lignin condensation measured by the amount of cleaved beta-O-4 ether linkages and interunit C-C linkages formed during biomass fractionation. To minimize the cleavage of aryl ether and formation of C-C linkages, a p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH)/choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system with hydrotropic properties was evaluated. The ChC1 was chosen to control the H+ concentration of the p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system. Compared with p-TsOH/H2O, the degradation of beta-O-4 was kept in a similar rate during p-TsOH/ChCl fractionation; however, the formation of C-C linkage was slower. Under 75/25 p-TsOH/ChCl mass ratio at 80 degrees C for 20 min, 76.6 % of miscanthus lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 30.9 %, and 88.9 % of wheat straw lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 33.6 %, can be dissolved. In addition, the low polar and layered structure of hydrotropic p-TsOH/ChCl system has a strong ability to dissolve lignin, which resulted in lignin with larger particle size and lower surface charge. The results also indicated that lignin from p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system has great potential for lignin depolymerization to aromatics for valorization.

A synthetic approach to a novel type of phosphonium and mixed phosphonium-iodonium ylides containing a conformationally fixed phosphonium fragment is developed. New representatives of these families of chemical compounds based on cyclic phenoxaphosphinine were synthesized. One compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Based on the H-1 NMR data, one can state that phosphonium ylide exists in solution in the form of two geometric isomers even at room temperature. This is indicative of pronounced double-bond character of the bond between the ylide carbon atom and the stabilizing carbomethoxy group.

Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.

Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. Clearing and immunolabeling take similar to 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the sample. Imaging and analysis can be performed in 1 d. Background and Aims: Robust evidence regarding the impact of disease activity on pregnancy outcomes in women with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is crucial for both clinicians and patients in preparing a birth plan. We sought to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the pooled influences of disease activity on pregnancy outcomes in women with IBD. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and the COCHRANE library to identify articles comparing pregnancy outcomes between active and inactive IBD at the time of conception or during pregnancy. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to pool estimates and report odds ratios [ORs]. Results: A total of 28 studies were identified as eligible for the meta-analysis. In women with active IBD, the pooled ORs for low birth weight [LBW], preterm birth, small for gestational age [SGA], spontaneous abortion and stillbirths were respectively 3.81 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.81-8.02), 2.42 [95% CI 1.74-3.35], 1.48 [95% CI 1.19-1.85], 1.87 [95% CI 1.17-3.0] and 2.27 [95% CI 1.03-5.04] compared to women with inactive IBD. In the subgroup analysis based on disease type, women with active ulcerative colitis had an increased risk of LBW, preterm birth and spontaneous abortion. Women with active Crohn’s disease had a higher risk of preterm birth, SGA and spontaneous abortion. Conclusions: Active IBD during the periconception period and pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Our data suggest that pregnancy should be planned when the disease is quiescent, and continuous disease control is important even during pregnancy.

Rice husk, rich in silica and abundantly available as waste, is presently destroyed by burning, which creates environmental issues. Thus, it will be advantageous if this rice husk waste can be used for preparation of valuable products. One of the application is its use as silica source in the synthesis of zeolites like ZSM-5, which are silico-aluminates. Rice husk waste is available in wide range of particle sizes in agricultural farms. There is no study available in open literature on use of these wide particle ranges for its direct application. This paper is an attempt to use wide particle size rice husk, its effect on ZSM-5 synthesis and its physico-chemical properties. Further these prepared ZSM-5 catalyst was evaluated for benzylation of mesitylene reaction. The study found that, rice husk of 600 mu m particle size is optimum as far as ZSM-5 synthesis, its physicochemical properties and further its application in mesitylene benzylation reaction.

Direct C-H functionalization of aryl ethers remains challenging owing to their low reactivity and selectivity. Herein, a novel strategy for nondirected C-H alkenylation of aryl ethers promoted by a dual ligand catalyst was demonstrated. This catalytic system readily achieved the highly efficient alkenylation of alkyl aryl ethers (anisole, phenetole, n-propyl phenyl ether, n-butyl phenyl ether and benzyl phenyl ether), cyclic aryl ethers (1,4-benzodioxan, 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, dibenzofuran), and diphenyl oxides. Moreover, the proposed methodology was successfully employed for the late-stage modification of complex drugs containing the aryl ether motif. Interestingly, the compounds developed herein displayed fluorescent properties, which would facilitate their biological applications.

Degradability of biomaterials brings many opportunities as well as great challenges to their clinical applications. However, reports of systematic in vivo biodegradation are rather limited due to lack of adequate methodology for real-time observations. Herein, a tri-modal bioimaging technique is developed, enabling real time monitoring of biodegradation of synthetic polymers in vivo. The demonstrated material is a successful preclinical poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) thermosensitive hydrogel that undergoes a spontaneous sol-gel transition upon heating. A macromolecular fluorescence probe and a contrast agent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are designed and synthesized. After subcutaneous injection of the hydrogel containing the two probes into mice, the degradation behaviors of the material are longitudinally and noninvasively tracked via the collaborative application of ultrasound, fluorescence, and MRI. Integrating the noninvasive imaging with the traditional anatomic observations, a three-stage degradation mechanism of such a hydrogel is proposed for the first time. Also, the dissolved polymers and degradation products in the body are mainly eliminated via liver, gallbladder, and spleen. This work has great value for promoting the future clinical application of these kind of promising hydrogels. Meanwhile, this technological platform provides beneficial inspiration and methodology to investigate in vivo fate of biomaterials.

Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

We report on the shape, composition (from Pt95Zn5 to Pt77Zn23), and surface chemistry of Pt-Zn nanoparticles obtained by reduction of precursors M2+(acac) (-)(2) (M2+: Pt2+ and Zn2+) in oleylamine, which serves as both solvent and ligand. We show first that the addition of phenyl ether or benzyl ether determines the composition and shape of the nanoparticles, which point to an adsorbate-controlled synthesis. The organic (ligand)/inorganic (nanoparticles) interface is characterized on the structural and chemical level. We observe that the particles, after washing with ethanol, are coated with oleylamine and the oxidation products of the latter, namely, an aldimine and a nitrile. After exposure to air, the particles oxidize, covering themselves with a few monolayer thick ZnO film, which is certainly discontinuous when the particles are low in zinc. Pt-Zn particles are unstable and prone to losing Zn. We have strong indications that the driving force is the preferential oxidation of the less noble metal. Finally, we show that adsorption of CO on the surface of nanoparticles modifies the oxidation state of amine ligands and attribute it to the displacement of hydrogen adsorbed on Pt. All the structural and chemical information provided by the combination of electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allows us to give a fairly accurate picture of the surface of nanoparticles and to better understand why Pt-Zn alloys are efficient in certain electrocatalytic reactions such as the oxidation of methanol.
