The dependence of polymer film transparency on different kinds of planar orientations of nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) is described. The two polymers exhibit opposite behavior: film transparency is improved for sPS and PPO by orientations of the chain axes of the NC phases being parallel (c(parallel to)) and perpendicular (c(perpendicular to)) to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be rationalized by the negative and positive birefringence of sPS and PPO chains, respectively. In fact, to maximize transparency, the refractive index of the NC phase along the perpendicular to the film plane has to be increased to come closer to that of the corresponding amorphous phase. This can be pursued by controlling the orientation of the NC phases and hence of the associated refractive index ellipsoids.

Herein, we report a Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling for the synthesis of benzonitriles from aryl (pseudo)halides and an electrophilic cyanating reagent, 2-methyl-2-phenyl malononitrile (MPMN). MPMN is a bench-stable, carbon-bound electrophilic CN reagent that does not release cyanide under the reaction conditions. A variety of medicinally relevant benzonitriles can be made in good yields. Addition of NaBr to the reaction mixture allows for the use of more challenging aryl electrophiles such as aryl chlorides, tosylates, and triflates. Mechanistic investigations suggest that NaBr plays a role in facilitating oxidative addition with these substrates.

We report a facile method to fabricate CuNi nano-octahedra and nanocubes using a colloidal synthesis approach. The CuNi nanocrystals terminated with exclusive crystallographic facets were controlled and achieved by a group of synergetic capping ligands in a hot solution system. Specifically, the growth of {111}-bounded CuNi nano-octahedra is derived by a thermodynamic control, whereas the generation of {100}-terminated CuNi nanocubes is steered by a kinetic capping of chloride. Using a reduction of 4-nitrophenol with sodium borohydride as a model reaction, CuNi nano-octahedra and nanocubes demonstrated a strong facet-dependence due to their different surface energies although both exhibited remarkable catalytic activity with the high rate constant over mass (k/m). A kinetic study indicated that this is a pseudo first-order reaction with an excess of sodium borohydride. CuNi nanocubes as the catalysts showed better catalytic performance (k/m = 385 s(-1)center dot g(-1)) than the CuNi nano-octahedra (k/m = 120 s(-1)center dot g(-1)), indicating that 4-nitrophenol and hydrogen were adsorbed on the {100} facets with their molecules parallel to the surface much easier than those on {111} facets.

Raising the capability of supporting and suppressing the leaching possibility to a very insignificant level has still remained challenging for some class of transition metals, i.e. Ni2+. Here we present the covalent functionalisalon of macrocyclic ligand, 4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 (kryptofix 22), on the surface of carbon nanotube (CNT), leading to a unique adsorptive capability for supporting Ni2+. This material was incorporated as a promising catalyst in coupling reactions including C-C, CN, and CO- – cross-coupling reactions. We demonstrate that the kryptofix 22 functionalisation on the surface of CNT has a key role in the enhancement of the adsorption capability Ni2+ and subsequent catalytic activity. We further prove that this ligand causes a significant boost in the recyclability of the reactions due to the extremely trivial Ni2+ leaching from the CNT’s surface during the reactions.

A series of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors based on the resorcinol diphenyl ether scaffold were discovered by incorporating hydrophilic moieties into the side chain and converting into the corresponding hydrochloride salt. Among these compounds, P18 showed the highest inhibitory activity against PD-1/PD-L1 with an IC50 value of 9.1 nM in a homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence binding assay. Besides, P18 promoted HepG2 cell death dose dependently in a HepG2/PD-L1 and Jurkat/PD-1 coculture cell model. Further, P18 demonstrated significantly higher water solubility (17.61 mg/mL) and improved pharmacokinetics (e.g., t(1/2) of similar to 20 h and oral bioavailability of 12%) than the previous analogues. Moreover, P18 was highly effective in suppressing tumor growth in an immune checkpoint humanized mouse model without apparent toxicity. Collectively, these results suggest that compound P18 represents a promising PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor worthy of further investigation as a potential anticancer agent.

Bio-based aromatic polyketones (PKs) and polyetherketones (PEKs) were synthesized by the electrophilic substitution reaction of alkoxylated divanillic acid (R-DVA) and 2,2′-dimethoxybiphenyl or diphenylether. Alkoxy side-chains were introduced at the hydroxyl groups of DVA prior to polymerization. Polymerizations were carried out in a phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5)/methanesulfonic acid (MsOH) system. DVA-based PKs and PEKs were soluble in common organic solvents including chloroform and dimethylsulfoxide, and their chemical structures were determined by H-1 and C-13 NMR. The weight-average molecular weights (M-w) of the PKs were 2.6-15.0 x 10(3) g/mol, and those of all PEKs were approximately 1.0 x 10(3). The 10% degradation temperatures of the PKs and PEKs were 340-400 degrees C. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the PKs and PEKs were amorphous. The PKs with methyl to butyl side-chains exhibited high glass transition temperatures (T-g) in the range 250-297 degrees C, while T-g of PK (octyl side-chain) was 157 degrees C and those of the PEKs were 73-127 degrees C.

Manganese(i) complexes bearing triazole ligands are reported as catalysts for the hydrosilylation of carbonyl and carboxyl compounds. The desired reaction proceeds readily at 80 degrees C within 3 hours at catalyst loadings as low as 0.25 to 1 mol%. Hence, good to excellent yields of alcohols could be obtained for a wide range of substrates including ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids illustrating the versatility of the metal/ligand combination.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) and dechlorane plus (DP) were measured in sediments collected from three mangrove wetlands of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in South China. This study aims to investigate the distribution of these halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and the correlations between HFRs and microbial community structure in mangrove sediments. Concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, TBBPA, HBCDD and DP in mangrove sediments ranged from 6.97 to 216.1, 3.70-26.0, 0.02-0.73, 0.02-37.5, 0.44-127.5 and 0.07-2.23 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Higher levels of PBDEs, BTBPE, HBCDD and DP were observed in sediments from Futian mangrove wetland of Shenzhen, the only nature reserve located in the downtown of China. The highest concentration of TBBPA found in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou was proximate to a ferry terminal and a dockyard where TBBPA is widely used in the coatings. PBDEs were the predominant HFRs in mangrove sediments, with an average contribution of 63.0%. Mangrove sediments from Guangzhou and Zhuhai showed an enrichment of (-)-alpha-HBCDD, (-)-beta-HBCDD and (-)-gamma-HBCDD. Concentrations of HFRs in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou increased significantly from 2012 to 2015, which was probably due to the establishment and rapid development of Nansha Free Trade Zone of Guangzhou. Redundancy analysis showed that HFRs may cause a shift of microbial community structure in mangrove sediments and the variations were significantly correlated with TBBPA, syn-DP and BTBPE. A variety of physicochemical properties and several hydrogenbond donors have been used to define methods and to build scales aiming at measuring the hydrogen-bond acceptance of solvents. There is a great deal of confusion in these scales and methods. Solvatochromic, solvatocalorimetric, solvatovibrational, and F-19 solvatomagnetic comparison methods are critically reviewed. Only two methods, the solvatomagnetic and the solvatocalorimetric ones, are able to yield reliable solvent hydrogen-bond acceptance scales. The solvatomagnetic beta(1) scale defined from the F-19 chemical shift of 4-fluorophenol is extended to many solvents including ionic liquids and green solvents. The results for about 240 hydrogen-bond acceptor solvents are organized in a numerical beta(1) database. The comparison of beta(1) with solvatochromic scales highlights their shortcomings, in particular for the important class of amphiprotic solvents. Therefore, the use of the F-19 solvatomagnetic comparison method and of the solvatomagnetic beta(1) scale is recommended in solvent effect studies.
