The lack of Nationally Certified Reference Materials for the calibration of DSC equipment in the sub-ambient range has been addressed by the introduction of a Certified Reference Material of purified cyclohexane by the National Metrology Institute of Japan. This sample, in conjunction with the CRM material phenyl salicylate and the ITS-90 fixed point material mercury, has enable a DSC-thermomicroscopy system to be accurately calibrated over the temperature range 90 degrees C to 50 degrees C. The DSC has then been used to measure values for the solid-solid transitions in the potential Certified Reference Materials ammonium sulphate, adamantane and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, which have the advantage of being thermally stable and easy to handle, and for the melting point of diphenyl ether. As the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and the entire class of organohalogen flame retardants, is declining, the use of organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRO is increasing. In this paper, we ask whether OPFRs are a better choice than PBDEs. To address this question, we compared OPFRs with PBDEs for a wide range of properties. Exposure to OPFRs is ubiquitous in people and in outdoor and indoor environments, and OPFRs are now often found at higher levels compared to PBDE peak exposure levels. Furthermore, data from toxicity testing, epidemiological studies, and risk assessments all suggest that there are health concerns at current exposure levels for both halogenated and nonhalogenated OPFRs. Obtaining the scientific evidence needed for regulation of OPFRs can take many years. Given the large number of OPFRs in use, manufacturers can move toward healthier and safer products by developing innovative ways to reduce the risk of fire for electronics enclosures, upholstered furniture, building materials, and other consumer products without adding flame retardant chemicals.

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

The Wayne State University (WSU) experimental descriptor database is utilized to bench mark the current capability of the solvation parameter model for use as a quantitative structure-retention relationship tool for estimating retention in gas and reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The prediction error for the retention factors of varied compounds on six open-tubular columns for gas chromatography (Rtx-5 SIL MS, DB-35 ms, RtxCLPesticides, HP-88, HP-INNOWAX and SLB-IL76) and three packed columns for reversed phase liquid chromatography (SunFire C-18 , XBridge Shield RP18, and XBridge Phenyl) is used to establish expectations related to current practices. Each column data set was divided into a training set for calibration and a test set for validation employing a roughly 1 to 2 split, such that each test set contained about 40 to 80 varied compounds. The average absolute error for the prediction of retention factors by gas chromatography varied from about 0.1 to 0.4 on the retention factor scale with the larger error typical of stationary phases ranked as the most polar (or cohesive). For reversed-phase liquid chromatography the average error for the prediction of retention factors was 0.3 to 0.5 and generally larger than for gas chromatography. Statistical filters where utilized to identify a group of polycyclic aromatic compounds without hydrogen-bonding functional groups with a larger prediction error on the SunFire C-18 column than for other compounds of smaller size, flexible structure or containing hydrogen-bonding functional groups. The heterogeneity of the retention mechanism is speculated to be the main contribution to the prediction error for both gas and liquid chromatography using the solvation parameter model. The hierarchical structure of zeolites plays a crucial role in determining their catalytic performance. Here, the effect of the hierarchical architecture and surface topology of pillared MWW zeolites on the catalytic properties of liquid alkylation between mesitylene and benzyl alcohol was investigated. Pillared MWW zeolite catalysts exhibited excellent activity (similar to 100% conversion) due to their elegant pore architecture, which could largely improve the accessibility of bulk molecules toward active sites on the external surface. In addition, molecular simulation showed that lamellar MWW zeolites with a 12-membered ring semicup surface topology could more effectively accommodate and stabilize the large intermediates formed in alkylation reactions compared with MFI zeolites, resulting in outstanding selectivity for 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (similar to 100%). The Thiele modulus (phi) and effectiveness factor (eta) verified that the resultant pillared MWW zeolites possessed a high degree of utilization without internal diffusion constraints under the present reaction conditions.

Background Despite tremendous progress has been achieved in tumor theranostic over the past decade, accurate identification and complete eradication of tumor cells remain a great challenge owing to the limitation of single imaging modality and therapeutic strategy. Results Herein, we successfully design and construct BiVO4/Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) superparticles (SPs) for computed tomography (CT)/photoacoustic (PA)/magnetic resonance (MR) multimodal imaging and radiotherapy (RT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) synergistic therapy toward oral epithelial carcinoma. On the one hand, BiVO4 NPs endow BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with impressive X-ray absorption capability due to the high X-ray attenuation coefficient of Bi, which is beneficial for their utilization as radiosensitizers for CT imaging and RT. On the other hand, Fe3O4 NPs impart BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with the superparamagnetic property as a T-2-weighted contrast agent for MR imaging. Importantly, the aggregation of Fe3O4 NPs in SPs and the presence of PDA shell greatly improve the photothermal conversion capability of SPs, making BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs as an ideal photothermal transducer for PA imaging and PTT. By integrating advantages of various imaging modalities (CT/PA/MR) and therapeutic strategies (RT/PTT), our BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs exhibit the sensitive multimodal imaging feature and superior synergistic therapeutic efficacy on tumors. Conclusions Since there are many kinds of building blocks with unique properties appropriating for self-assembly, our work may largely enrich the library of nanomateirals for tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Transition metal-catalyzed single bond metathesis has recently emerged as a useful strategy for functional group transfer. In this work, we explored the mechanism and reactivity profile of Pd/PhI-cocatalyzed C-P bond metathesis between aryl phosphines using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The overall single bond metathesis involves two Pd(ii)-catalyzed C-P reductive eliminations and two Pd(0)-catalyzed C-P oxidative additions, which allows the reversible C-P bond cleavage and formation of the phosphonium cation. Distortion/interaction analysis indicates that the facile C-P bond cleavage and formation of the phosphonium cation are due to the involvement of coordinating aryl phosphine in the process. In addition, the substituent effects on the reaction kinetics and thermodynamics of metathesis were computed, which provides helpful mechanistic information for the design of related single bond metathesis reactions.

Lignin is an abundant source of aromatics, and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing high-value chemicals. Selective hydrogenolysis of the C-O ether bond in lignin is an important strategy for the production of fuels and chemical feedstocks. In our study, catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds (beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 model compounds) over Ni3S2-CS catalysts was investigated. Hence, an array of 2D carbon nanostructure Ni3S2-CSs-X-Y derived catalysts were produced using different compositions at different temperatures (X = 0 mg, 0.2 mg, 0.4 mg, 0.6 mg, and 0.8 mg; Y = 600 degrees C, 700 degrees C, 800 degrees C, and 900 degrees C) were prepared and applied for hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds and depolymerization of alkaline lignin. The highest conversion of lignin model compounds (beta-O-4 model compound) was up to 100% and the yield of the obtained corresponding ethylbenzene and phenol could achieve 92% and 86%, respectively, over the optimal Ni3S2-CSs-0.4-700 catalyst in iPrOH at 260 degrees C without external H-2. The 2D carbon nanostructure catalysts performed a good dispersion on the surface of the carbon nanosheets, which facilitated the cleavage of the lignin ether bonds. The physicochemical characterization studies were carried out by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, Raman and XPS analyses. Based on the optimal reaction conditions (260 degrees C, 4 h, 2.0 MPa N-2), various model compounds (beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 model compounds) could also be effectively hydrotreated to produce the corresponding aromatic products. Furthermore, the optimal Ni3S2-CSs-0.4-700 catalyst could be carried out in the next five consecutive cycle experiments with a slight decrease in the transformation of lignin model compounds.

Despite decades-long bans on the production and use of certain chemicals, many halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) are persistent and can bioaccumulate in the marine environment with the potential to cause physiological harm to marine fauna. Highly lipid-rich tissue (e.g., marine mammal blubber) functions as a reservoir for HOCs, and selecting ideal indicator species is a priority for retrospective and proactive screening efforts. We selected five marine mammal species as possible indicators for the Southern California Bight (SCB) and applied a non-targeted analytical method paired with an automated data reduction strategy to catalog a broad range of known, known but unexpected, and unknown compounds in their blubber. A total of 194 HOCs were detected across the study species (n = 25 individuals), 81% of which are not routinely monitored, including 30 halogenated natural products and 45 compounds of unknown structure and origin. The cetacean species (long-beaked common dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, and Risso’s dolphin) averaged 128 HOCs, whereas pinnipeds (California sea lion and Pacific harbor seal) averaged 47 HOCs. We suspect this disparity can be attributed to differences in life history, foraging strategies, and/or enzyme-mediated metabolism. Our results support proposing (1) the long- and short-beaked common dolphin as apex marine predator sentinels for future and retrospective biomonitoring of the SCB ecosystem and (2) the use of non-targeted contaminant analyses to identify and prioritize emerging contaminants. The use of a sentinel marine species together with the non-targeted analytical approach will enable a proactive approach to environmental contaminant monitoring. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
