In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

A new approach for the reduction of aryl ammonium salts to arenes or aryl silanes using nickel catalysis is reported. This method displays excellent ligand-controlled selectivity based on the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand employed. Utilizing a large NHC in non-polar solvents generates aryl silanes, while small NHCs in polar solvents promote reduction to arenes. Several classes of aryl silanes can be accessed from simple aniline building blocks, including those useful for cross-couplings, oxidations, and halogenations. The reaction conditions are mild, functional group tolerant, and provide efficient access to a variety of benzene derivatives.

Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. In this study, a few metal nanoparticle (NP) layers are LbL-assembled onto insulating paper for the preparation of conductive paper. Subsequent Ni electroplating of the metal NP-coated substrates reduces the sheet resistance from approximate to 10(3) to <0.1 omega sq(-1) while maintaining the porous structure of the pristine paper. Particularly, this approach is completely compatible with commercial electroplating processes, and thus can be directly extended to electroplating applications using a variety of other metals in addition to Ni. After depositing high-energy MnO NPs onto Ni-electroplated papers, the areal capacitance increases from 68 to 811 mF cm(-2) as the mass loading of MnO NPs increases from 0.16 to 4.31 mg cm(-2). A tricomponent catalyst comprising titanium tetrachloride, triisobutyl aluminum and diphenyl ether is developed for the highly cis-1,4-selective polymerization of isoprene. The influence of the content of diphenyl ether and its complexation order on polymerization, microstructure and performance of polyisoprene are studied. The polyisoprene synthesized presents high monomer conversion (91-99%). With the increasing of diphenyl ether content, intrinsic viscosity and viscosity-average molecular weight of polyisoprene increase. The molar percentage of cis-1,4-unit is almost unaffected by diphenyl ether and different complexation sequence. The polyisoprene reveals comparable T-g (-61.31 degrees C) and mechanical strengths (11.14MPa, 667%) to commercially available LHIR-80 synthesized with neodymium. However, the viscosity and viscosity-average molecular weight of the former are lower than that of the latter, which avails the processability and maintains excellent mechanical properties.

The classical Sonogashira reaction of aryl electrophiles in the presence of Pd catalysts has been well established as a potent method for arylalkyne synthesis. However, the site-selective C(sp(2))-C(sp) cross-coupling strategy using a non-noble-metal catalyst is rare. An efficient alternative approach for the synthesis of arylalkynes via a Cu-catalyzed Sonogashira-type reaction promoted by visible light is described. This method enables site-selective alkynylation from aryl sulfonium salts derived from diverse arenes to a set of arylalkynes with high selectivity and high functional-group compatibility. Moreover, rapid alkynylation of drug molecules is demonstrated.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the sediment core form Poyang Lake. The concentrations of sigma 17 PBDEs and sigma 15 PAHs ranged from 1.13 to 4.64 ng/g, and from 341 to 744 ng/g, respectively. The Rock-Eval test was conducted to obtain organic matter parameters such as total organic carbon (TOC), S2, and hydrogen index (HI). The value of TOC, S2, and HI showed an increasing trend from the bottom to the surface. Source analysis results showed that the source of PAHs was combustion. Moreover, the correlation analysis of PBDEs, PAHs, and annual average temperature with S2 and HI showed that BDE-202, BDE-201, BDE-183, and BDE-154 were negatively correlated with S2 and HI, while BDE-85 and BDE-47 were positively correlated. There was no significant correlations of PAHs with S2 and HI, which is related to the disturbance of sediments. It is interesting that significantly positive correlation of HI with five-year moving averages of the air temperature was demonstrated, demonstrating that the climate warming enhanced the increase of algae in the Poyang Lake.

Composite worm-like micelles (CWMs) that encapsulate a large number of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (SMNPs) within the core while still having a small width should have a high magnetic resonance sensitivity and simultaneously a desirable circulation behaviour in biological systems. However, the preparation of such CWMs is still a challenge. Herein we report the fabrication of CWMsviatwo-stage self-assembly of SMNPs guided by a block copolymer and DNA, respectively. First, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) co-assembled with SMNPs to form spherical composite micelles, guiding the clustering of multiple SMNPs within the core of the micelles. Then, at the second stage, DNA co-assembled with and guided the linear aggregation and fusion of the micelles, resulting in the CWM encapsulating a large number of SMNPs in the linear core. As a proof of concept, CWMs with aT(2)relaxivity as high as 704 mM(-1)s(-1)and a low MRI detection limit of 2.2 mu g mL(-1)(similar to 0.02 nM CWMs) were prepared; it is significant that theT(2)relaxivity of the SMNPs assembled in the CWMs is around 20 times that of the same SMNPs in the same amount but individually dispersed in the suspension. Additionally, although heavily loaded with SMNPs, the CWMs have a width as small as 20.5 nm and a core-shell structure with PEG as the shell. These features should make the CWMs very promising in their use as ultra-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging probes.

Amphiphilic thermoresponsive block helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) was synthesized by the polymerization of phenyl isocyanide using a Pd(ii) complex catalyst as an initiator. The polymer could self-assemble into spherical micelles. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the micelle solution was adjusted by changing the molar ratio of the hydrophobic segment to the hydrophilic segment and finally optimized to be 41 degrees C at a molar ratio of 1 : 2. After loading Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the magnetic complex micelles were prepared. The magnetic complex micelles demonstrated reversible thermoresponsiveness and obvious magnetic hyperthermia. Cell viability measurements indicated that the nanomaterials were well-biocompatible and nontoxic. The magnetic complex micelles could be used as nanocarriers to achieve controlled release of doxorubicin (DOX) by altering the temperature. Intracellular experiments demonstrated that the magnetic complex micelles showed excellent anticancer synergistic thermo-chemotherapy performance under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) owing to magnetic hyperthermia from micelle-loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles and effective drug release due to the morphology change of thermoresponsive poly(phenyl isocyanide)s.
