Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

Quality Control of Diphenyl oxide. The Name is Diphenyl oxide. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 101-84-8.

Marine sponges are recognized as valuable sources of bioactive metabolites and renowned as petri dishes of the sea, providing specialized niches for many symbiotic microorganisms. Sponges of the family Dysideidae are well documented to be chemically talented, often containing high levels of polyhalogenated compounds, terpenoids, peptides, and other classes of bioactive small molecules. This group of tropical sponges hosts a high abundance of an uncultured filamentous cyanobacterium, Hormoscilla spongeliae. Here, we report the comparative genomic analyses of two phylogenetically distinct Hormoscilla populations, which reveal shared deficiencies in essential pathways, hinting at possible reasons for their uncultivable status, as well as differing biosynthetic machinery for the production of specialized metabolites. One symbiont population contains clustered genes for expanded polybrominated diphenylether (PBDE) biosynthesis, while the other instead harbors a unique gene cluster for the biosynthesis of the dysinosin nonribosomal peptides. The hybrid sequencing and assembly approach utilized here allows, for the first time, a comprehensive look into the genomes of these elusive sponge symbionts. IMPORTANCE Natural products provide the inspiration for most clinical drugs. With the rise in antibiotic resistance, it is imperative to discover new sources of chemical diversity. Bacteria living in symbiosis with marine invertebrates have emerged as an untapped source of natural chemistry. While symbiotic bacteria are often recalcitrant to growth in the lab, advances in metagenomic sequencing and assembly now make it possible to access their genetic blueprint. A cell enrichment procedure, combined with a hybrid sequencing and assembly approach, enabled detailed genomic analysis of uncultivated cyanobacterial symbiont populations in two chemically rich tropical marine sponges. These population genomes reveal a wealth of secondary metabolism potential as well as possible reasons for historical difficulties in their cultivation.

Lignin may serve as a renewable feedstock for the production of chemicals and fuels if mild, scalable processes for its depolymerization can be devised. The use of small organic thiols represents a bioinspired strategy to cleave the beta-O-4 bond, the most common linkage in lignin. In the present study, synthetic beta-O-4 linked polymers were treated with organic thiols, yielding up to 90 % cleaved monomer products. Lignin extracted from poplar was also treated with organic thiols resulting in molecular weight reductions as high as 65 % (M-n) in oxidized lignin. Thiol-based cleavage of other lignin linkages was also explored in small-molecule model systems to uncover additional potential pathways by which thiols might depolymerize lignin. The success of thiol-mediated cleavage on model dimers, polymers, and biomass-derived lignin illustrates the potential utility of small redox-active molecules to penetrate complex polymer matrices for depolymerization and subsequent valorization of lignin into fuels and chemicals.

Value addition to glycerol, the sole co-product in biodiesel production, will lead to reform of the overall biodiesel economy. Different valuable chemicals can be produced from glycerol using heterogeneous catalysis and these valuable chemicals are useful in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fuels, soap, paints, and fine chemicals. Therefore, the conversion of glycerol to valuable chemicals using heterogeneous catalysis is a noteworthy area of research. Etherification of glycerol with alkenes or alcohols is an important reaction in converting glycerol to various value-added chemicals. This article describes reaction of glycerol with benzyl alcohol in solvent-free medium by using a clay supported modified heteropolyacid (HPA), Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 (Cs-DTP/K-10) as solid catalyst and its comparison with other catalysts in a batch reactor. Mono-Benzyl glycerol ether (MBGE) was the major product formed in the reaction along with formation of di-benzyl glycerol ether (DBGE). The effects of different parameters were studied to optimize the reaction parameters. This work provides an insight into characterization of Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 catalyst by advanced techniques such as surface area measurement, X-ray analysis, ICP-MS, FT-IR, and SEM. Reaction products were characterized and confirmed by using the GCMS method. The kinetic model was developed from an insight into the reaction mechanism. The apparent energy of activation was found to be 18.84 kcal/mol.

Herein, we investigate the role of processing solvent additives on the formation of polymer-perylene diimide bulk-heterojunction active layers for organic photo-voltaics using both spin-coating and slot-die coating methods. We compare the effect of 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and diphenyl ether (DPE) as solvent additives on the aggregation behavior of the non-fullerene acceptor, N-annulated perylene diimide dimer (tPDI(2)N-EH), in neat films and blended films with the benzodithiophene-quinoxaline (BDT-QX, QX-3) donor polymer, processed from toluene in air. DIO processing crystallizes the tPDI(2)N-EH acceptor and leads to the decreased solar cell performance. DPE processing has a more subtle effect on the bulk-heterojunction morphology and leads to an improved solar cell performance. A comparison of the spin-coating vs slot-die coating methods shows that the effect of DPE is prominent for the slot-die coated active layers. While similar device power conversion efficiencies are achieved with active layers coated with both methods (ca. 7.3% vs 6.5%), the use of DPE improves the film quality when the slot-die coating method is employed.

I found the field of Engineering; Environmental Sciences & Ecology very interesting. Saw the article Complex Mixtures of Brominated/Chlorinated Diphenyl Ethers and Dibenzofurans in Soils from the Agbogbloshie e-Waste Site (Ghana): Occurrence, Formation, and Exposure Implications published in 2019.0. The distribution and toxic equivalents (TEQs) of brominated and chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs) in soils from Agbogbloshie e-waste site (Ghana) were investigated. The composition of brominated/chlorinated dibenzofurans (PXDFs) and diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, PCDEs, and PXDEs) was examined using two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry to elucidate possible formation pathways of dioxins from e-waste recycling. The highest concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs were found, respectively, in the open burning (1.3-380 ng/g dry weight) and dismantling areas (11-1000 ng/g dry weight) and were comparable to the highest reported for informal e-waste sites. PXDFs and PXDEs were detected at up to the range of hundreds of nanograms per gram. The homologue profiles suggest that PXDFs were formed mainly from PBDFs through successive Br-to-Cl exchange. However, monobromo-PCDFs were also derived from de-novo-generated PCDFs in open burning areas. PBDFs contributed similar or higher TEQs (7.9-5400 pg/g dry weight) compared with PCDD/Fs (6.8-5200 pg/g dry weight), whereas PXDFs were also substantial TEQ contributors in open burning areas. The high TEQs of PBDFs in the dismantling area (120-5200 pg/g dry weight) indicate the need to consider brominated dioxins besides chlorinated dioxins in future studies on health implications for e-waste workers and local residents.

A novel and highly active zeolite Y/ZSM-5 composite zeolite (CZ)-supported nickel catalyst (Ni/CZ with 10% of Ni loading) was prepared by modified deposition-precipitation to uniformly disperse Ni nanoparticles (NNPs) onto CZ. Hecaogou subbituminous coal was exhaustively extracted with isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixed solvent to afford the extractable portion and inextractable portion (IEP). Ethanol-soluble portion (ESP) was obtained by ethanolyzing the IEP at 300 degrees C and subjected to catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) over Ni-10%/CZ at 160 degrees C to afford catalytically hydroconverted ESP (CHCESP). Both ESP and CHCESP were analyzed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), and quadrupole exactive orbitrap mass spectrometer. The results show that the relative contents (RCs) of both chain alkanes and hydroarenes in CHCESP are significantly higher than those in ESP and cyclanes and alkenes were only detected in CHCESP, while the RCs of both arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds in CHCESP are much lower than those in ESP and nitrogen- and/or sulfur-containing organic compounds were only detected in ESP with GC/MS. According to the CHC of oxybis(methylene)dibenzene (OBMDB), Ni-10%/CZ can effectively activate H-2 to biatomic active hydrogen (H center dot center dot center dot H) and the resulting H center dot center dot center dot H was heterolytically split into an immobile H- attached on Ni/CZ and a mobile H+. H+ transfers to an oxygen atom (OA) in OBMDB and cleaves the C-O bridged bond to produce phenylmethanol (PM) and benzylium, followed by H- abstraction from the Ni/CZ surface by benzylium to form toluene. H+ transfer to the OA in PM also leads to the cleavage of the C-O bond in PM to produce H2O and benzylium, which abstracts H- from the Ni/CZ surface to yield toluene. H center dot center dot center dot H transfer to the benzene ring in toluene generates methylcyclohexane. Therefore, Ni-10%/CZ catalyzes both H+ and H center dot center dot center dot H transfer. In addition, it proved to be stable for the CHC of OBMDB after 3 cycles.

Human exposure to pentabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE) mixture (DE-71) and its PBDE-47 congener can occur both in utero and during lactation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that PBDE-induced neonatal hepatic transcriptomic alterations in Wistar Han rat pups can inform on potential toxicity and carcinogenicity after longer term PBDE exposures. Wistar Han rat dams were exposed to either DE-71 or PBDE-47 daily from gestation day (GD 6) through postnatal day 4 (PND 4). Total plasma thyroxine (T4) was decreased in PND 4 pups. In liver, transcripts for CYPs and conjugation enzymes, Nrf2, and ABC transporters were upregulated. In general, the hepatic transcriptomic alterations after exposure to DE-71 or PBDE-47 were similar and provided early indicators of oxidative stress and metabolic alterations, key characteristics of toxicity processes. The transcriptional benchmark dose lower confidence limits of the most sensitive biological processes were lower for PBDE-47 than for the PBDE mixture. Neonatal rat liver transcriptomic data provide early indicators on molecular pathway alterations that may lead to toxicity and/or carcinogenicity if the exposures continue for longer durations. These early toxicogenomic indicators may be used to help prioritize chemicals for a more complete toxicity and cancer risk evaluation.
