Herein, we conceptualized a transient mediator approach that has the capability of para-selective C-H functionalization of monosubstituted aromatics. This approach is enabled by in situ generation of a versatile sulfonium salt via highly electrophilic phenoxathiine or thianthrene dication intermediate which can be readily generated from its sulfoxide with tri-fluoromethanesulfonic anhydride. Preliminary mechanistic study implied that the remarkable para selectivity might be related to the incredible electrophilicity of thianthrene dication intermediate. The versatility of this approach was demonstrated via para-borylation of various monosubstituted simple aromatics combining the sulfonium salt formation with further photocatalyzed transformation.

Hierarchical SAPO-18 molecular sieve was successfully post-synthesized in the alkaline tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) solution and hydrochloride (HCl) acid solution. In the TEAOH solution, preferential dissolution occurs surrounding the defect sites in a controlled manner, leading to hierarchical SAPO-18 with wellpreserved chemical compositions and crystallinities. In acidic solution, the dissolution is revealed to be sensitive to both the defects and the chemical compositions (selective dissolution of the Si-O-Al domains), which cooperatively contribute to the generation of meso-/macropores in the crystals. The crystallization of SAPO-18 precursor is thus inferred to proceed via an oriented nanoparticle attachment mechanism in the early stage. The twinning and intergmwth of nanoparticles occur in an ordered way, leading to the oriented arrangement of the crystallite boundaries. The defects located at the intergrowth interface are prone to acid/alkaline attacks, and play crucial role in the development of hierarchical pore systems. The hierarchical SAPO-18 sample exhibits excellent catalytic reaction performance in the liquid phase benzylation reaction of benzene and benzyl alcohol.

Extensive characterizations, mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, are reported for co-crystalline (CC) poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide (PPO) films with many different low-molecular-mass guest molecules. These characterizations are also reported for the corresponding nanoporous crystalline (NC) phases, as obtained by suitable guest-removal procedures. Two well-separated NC forms, hereafter named alpha and beta, are obtained by guest removal from two well-separated groups of CC forms. alpha and beta NC forms can be easily recognized by reflections in WAXD patterns as well as by suitable FTIR crystalline peaks. Density and degree of crystallinity measurements confirm that both NC phases exhibit a density definitely smaller than for the amorphous phase (rho(am) = 1.04 g/cm(3) rho(beta) = 0.95 g/cm(3) > rho(alpha) = 0.93 g/cm(3)). Density functional theory calculations combined with geometrical analysis on PPO model systems indicate conformations suitable to fit the observed chain periodicities of the two crystalline forms (c = 5.28 and 5.47 angstrom, for alpha and beta NC forms, respectively).

The hierarchical structure of zeolites plays a crucial role in determining their catalytic performance. Here, the effect of the hierarchical architecture and surface topology of pillared MWW zeolites on the catalytic properties of liquid alkylation between mesitylene and benzyl alcohol was investigated. Pillared MWW zeolite catalysts exhibited excellent activity (similar to 100% conversion) due to their elegant pore architecture, which could largely improve the accessibility of bulk molecules toward active sites on the external surface. In addition, molecular simulation showed that lamellar MWW zeolites with a 12-membered ring semicup surface topology could more effectively accommodate and stabilize the large intermediates formed in alkylation reactions compared with MFI zeolites, resulting in outstanding selectivity for 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (similar to 100%). The Thiele modulus (phi) and effectiveness factor (eta) verified that the resultant pillared MWW zeolites possessed a high degree of utilization without internal diffusion constraints under the present reaction conditions.

Land application of composted municipal solid waste (C-MSW) can divert waste from landfill but can also be a route of entry into the environment for contaminants. This study presents a preliminary human health and ecological risk assessment for organic contaminants in C-MSW generated in New South Wales, Australia, to identify and prioritise contaminants of concern. Following an initial screening assessment, terrestrial and aquatic risks were assessed by predicted soil and water concentrations, respectively. The assessment ranked contaminants as very high, high, medium or low priority. A qualitative review was then used to identify contaminants of concern, which included polybrominated diphenyl ethers, phthalates, bisphenol A and dibutyltin. Phenol was initially categorised as very high priority but due to its rapid degradation in soil, this is likely to be overly-conservative. The herbicides dicamba and MCPA were categorised as medium priority or higher but due to uncertainties in the data, these categories are also likely to be overly-conservative. A range of contaminants had concentrations below the screening criteria and were therefore considered low risk. Many contaminants were below the limit of reporting in all samples and were therefore not considered to be sufficiently distributed in the material to pose a risk. Some contaminants were detected in the material but could not be assessed as no criteria were available. The information from this study can be used by regulators when managing land application of C-MSW to ensure that the risks to human health and the environment are managed appropriately. Raising the open circuit voltage (V-oc) of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices is one of the key parameters to enhance performance and increase utility. We report an active layer composed of a quinoxaline-based donor polymer and an N-annulated perylene diimide (PDI) dimer which are stable and readily scaled materials and as blended solutions can be processed into films using non-halogenated solvents and slot-die coating methods. OPV devices with a highV(oc)exceeding 1.2 V were obtained under one sun illumination. Furthermore, the practical application of indoor light recycling is demonstrated, reporting a high deviceV(oc)of 1.1 V under LED illumination. Modification of the cathode interlayer or addition of a third component using perylene diimide (PDI) based materials is shown to further enhance deviceV(oc)under all operating conditions.

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Sigma 9PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Sigma(16)PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. While infants are developing, they are easily affected by toxic chemicals existing in their environments, such as semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs): phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). However, the specific living environment of infants, including increased plastic products and foam floor mats, may increase the presence of these chemicals, In this study, 68 air, dust, and window film samples were collected from homes, with 3- to 6-month-old infant occupants, to analyze phthalates, PAHs, PBDEs, and OPEs. High detection rates and concentrations suggest that these SVOCs are widespread in infant environments and are associated with cooking methods, smoking habits, the period of time after decoration, and room floors. The partitioning behavior of SVOCs indicates that the logarithms of the dust/gas-phase air partition coefficient (logK(D)) and the window film/gas-phase air partition coefficient (logK(F)) in homes are not at an equilibrium state when the logarithm of the octanol/air partition coefficient (logK(OA)) is less than 8 or greater than 11, Considering the 3 exposure routes, ingestion and dermal absorption have become the main routes of infant exposure to phthalates and OPEs, and ingestion and inhalation have become the dominant routes of exposure to PAHs and PBDEs. The total carcinogenic risk of SVOCs, which have carcinogenic toxicities, via ingestion and dermal absorption for infants in homes exceeds the acceptable value, suggesting that the current levels of these SVOCs in homes might pose a risk to infant health.
