Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

In this work, we provide a detailed account of the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of rhenium disulfide (ReS2), a promising new-generation two-dimensional material. By screening LPE in a wide range of solvents, we show that the most optimal solvents are characterized by similar Hildebrand or dispersive Hansen solubility parameters of 25 and 18 MPa1/2, respectively. Such values are attained by solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and 1-butanol. In line with solution thermodynamics, we interpret the conditions for high-yield exfoliation as a matching of the solvent and ReS2 solubility parameters. Using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as an exemplary exfoliation solvent, we undertook a detailed analysis of the exfoliated ReS2. In-depth morphological, structural, and elemental characterization outlined that the LPE procedure presented here produces few-layer, anisotropically stacked, and chemically pure ReS2 platelets with long-term stability against oxidation. These results underscore the suitability of LPE to batch-produce few-layer and pristine ReS2 in solvents that have a solubility parameter close to 25 MPa1/2.

Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1 : 1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.

Two random terpolymers bearing alkoxy-benzodithiophene as an electron-rich unit and N-octylthieno[3,4,c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) as an electron deficient group with thiophene and selenophene pi bridges, were synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical, optical properties of the polymers were analyzed to get an insight on the effect of different p bridges. Photovoltaic performances of the polymers were investigated with a conventional device architecture. PBTS, PBTSe based polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibited power conversion efficiency of 3.32% and 3.19%. PCE of PBTS:PC71BM based PSCs were improved to 4.30% with the addition of 1% (vol/vol) 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) as a solution processing additive. With the introduction of diphenyl ether (DPE) as the solvent additive, PBTSe based polymer solar cells attained 5.15% PCE value due to the formation of the interpenetrated network structure of domains. The synthesis and characterisation of asymmetrical zinc(II) 2(3)-mono-isophthalic acid-9(10),16(17),23 (24)-tri (tert-butylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (complex 4) are reported. The phthalocyanine is conjugated to cysteamine capped silver nanoparticles (Cys-Ag NPs), amine functionalised iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (NH2-Fe3O4 NPs) and a core-shell composite of the two (Cys-Fe3O4@Ag) via amide bonds. The photo-physico-chemical properties of complex 4 and its respective nanoconjugates (4-Ag, 4-Fe3O4 NPs and 4-Fe3O4@Ag NPs) are also reported. The nanoconjugates showed improved triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields compared to complex 4. The antibacterial activity of complex 4 and its nanoconjugates were also evaluated on S. aureus wherein their activity was found to be mainly visible light driven with the best catalyst being 4-Fe3O4@Ag. The work therefore demonstrates the feasibility of phthalocyanine-nanoparticle based compounds as potential agents in real life antibacterial treatment.

Psoralen is a furocoumarin natural product that intercalates within DNA and forms covalent adducts when activated by ultraviolet radiation. It is well known that this property contributes to psoralen’s clinical efficacy in several disease contexts, which include vitiligo, psoriasis, graft-versus-host disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Given the therapeutic relevance of psoralen and its derivatives, we attempted to synthesize psoralens with even greater potency. In this study, we report a library of 73 novel psoralens, the largest collection of its kind. When screened for the ability to reduce cell proliferation, we identified two derivatives even more cytotoxic than 4 ‘-aminomethyl-4,5 ‘,8-trimethylpsoralen (AMT), one of the most potent psoralens identified to date. Using MALDI-TOF MS, we studied the DNA adduct formation for a subset of novel psoralens and found that in most cases enhanced DNA binding correlated well with cytotoxicity. Generally, our most potent derivatives contain positively charged substituents, which we believe increase DNA affinity and enhance psoralen intercalation. Thus, we provide a rational approach to guide efforts toward further optimizing psoralens to fully capitalize on this drug class’ therapeutic potential. Finally, the structure-activity insights we have gained shed light on several opportunities to study currently underappreciated aspects of psoralen’s mechanism.

Cleavage of ether bonds is a crucial but challenging step for lignin valorization. To efficiently realize this transformation, the development of robust catalysts or catalytic systems is required. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-supported Ru (denoted as Ru/MMT) is fabricated as a dual-functional heterogeneous catalyst to cleave various types of ether bonds through transfer hydrogenolysis without using any additional acids or bases. The prepared Ru/MMT material is found to efficiently catalyze the cleavage of various lignin models and lignin-derived phenols; cyclohexanes (fuels) and cyclohexanols (key intermediates) are the main products. The synergistic effect between electron-enriched Ru and the acidic sites on MMT contributes to the excellent performance of Ru/MMT. Systematic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through two possible reaction pathways, including the direct cleavage of ether bonds and the formation of intermediates with one hydrogenated benzene ring, for all examined types of ether bonds, namely, 4-O-5, alpha-O-4, and beta-O-4.

Cleavage of C-O bonds in aryl ether through the catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) is an encouraging method for the valorization of lignin into fine chemicals and liquid fuels. In this contribution, the CTH of typical lignin alpha-O-4 model compound 4-(benzyloxy)phenol (BOP) and lignin extracted from ash wood have been explored over 0.45 wt% Pt/HNbWO6/CNTs catalyst. The effect of solvents was elaborated and the highest catalytic activity was achieved in the CTH of BOP using isopropanol as the solvent (98.1%). This was because isopropanol can provide more hydrogen atoms to promote CTH reaction due to the weakest interaction between isopropanol and BOP among all H-donor solvents. The favorable results obtained in the model compound study inspired us to afford Pt/HNbWO6/CNTs catalyst in the CTH of lignin. The relative oxygen content of lignin was sharply decreased after the CTH process, and the higher heating value (HHV) significantly increased from 21.4 MJ/kg to 30.8 MJ/kg. GPC, FT-IR, GC-MS, and 2D-NMR results revealed that lignin was successfully depolymerized into small molecule compounds over Pt/HNbWO6/CNTs catalyst through the CTH process. Thereinto, phenolic compounds were the major components in the liquid products in which most of them were monophenols. The results obtained in this work shed light on that Pt/HNbWO6/CNTs was a favorable catalyst in the depolymerization of lignin into valuable phenolic compounds via the CTH method. With the aid of direct heating through microwave irradiation in non-aqueous media, nanocrystalline tungsten(vi) oxide is achievable in 30 minutes at 200 degrees C, faster and at a lower temperature than conventional synthesis methods. Forming in a platelet morphology, these particles are as small as 20 nm with a BET surface area of 37 m(2) g(-1) WO3. As expected, these rate constants are larger than those observed for commercially prepared, micron-sized WO3. XPS analysis shows that during catalysis, the concentration of W5+ on the surface increases, but the nanoplatelets are stable under these reaction conditions. The overall morphology and size of the particles are retained through the reactions. Moreover, the nanoplatelets are recyclable-showing no loss in activity for four reaction cycles.
