Background: Neurotoxic effects of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) at low levels have not been well studied in human population, and whether the associations can be explained by thyroid hormones (THs) remains unclear. Objectives: We examined the associations of prenatal PBDE exposures with THs in cord plasma and neurobehavior of children at 2 and 4 years among general population in China. Methods: Participants were mother-child pairs in the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study. Nine PBDE congeners and THs (thyroid stimulating hormone, total thyroxine, free thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, and free triiodothyronine) were determined in cord plasma. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1.5-5) were completed by caregivers to assess children’s neurobehavioral development at 2 and 4 years. In the final analyses, 199 and 307 mother-child pairs at 2 and 4 years were included to examine associations of PBDEs with CBCL scores using Pearson-scale-adjusted Poisson regressions, and 339 subjects were included in linear regression models to investigate the associations between PBDEs and THs. Results: BDE-47 had the highest detection rate of 83.82% with the median concentration of 0.19 ng/g lipid, followed by BDE-28, -99, -100 and -153 with detection rates nearly 50%. We found positive associations between prenatal PBDE concentrations and children’s neurobehavior, including Somatic Complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep Problems and Internalizing Problems in girls, and Somatic Complaints and Attention Problems in boys. We also observed inverse associations of the sum of BDE-47, – 28, – 99, -100 and -153 with THs. However, by adding THs to the models examining associations between PBDEs and CBCL, the main results didn’t measurably change. Conclusions: This study adds new knowledge that prenatal PBDEs at low levels may be related to long-lasting behavioral abnormalities in children and reduced THs in cord plasma. However, the hypothesis that the neurotoxic impact of PBDEs may be explained by alterations in cord THs was not supported.

Short-chain oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs) (molecular formula: H3CO-(CH2O)(n)-CH3, where n = 3-5) have previously been studied as diesel-like fuels and fuel additives. OMEs can be produced from sustainably sourced methanol, and tests indicate that they are neither genotoxic nor mutagenic. In this report, their potential as solvents has been investigated to expand the bio-derived solvent space. According to traditional solvatochromic parameters, a commercial mixture of OME3-5 and its individual components (OME3, OME4, and OME5) have solvation properties similar to problematic industrial ether solvents such as 1,4-dioxane. Peroxide formation, one of the chief dangers of classical ether solvents, was found to occur much more slowly in OMEs than in conventional solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THE), demonstrating an improved safety profile. The commercial OME3-5 mixture was found to be broadly miscible with organic solvents but immiscible with water, suggesting potential application in aqueous extractions. It performed well in the dissolution of polystyrene and removal of paints and coatings, indicating OME3-5 may suitable to replace dichloromethane in polymer recycling, polymer welding, and cleaning applications. To further demonstrate applicability as a solvent, this mixture was shown to facilitate a model Suzuki coupling reaction at rates similar to cyclopentyl methyl ether, which is currently marketed as a green ether. Finally, OME3-5 proved a suitable solvent for enzymatic polymerization, giving high yields, moderately high degrees of polymerization, and remarkably narrow dispersity values.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the sediment core form Poyang Lake. The concentrations of sigma 17 PBDEs and sigma 15 PAHs ranged from 1.13 to 4.64 ng/g, and from 341 to 744 ng/g, respectively. The Rock-Eval test was conducted to obtain organic matter parameters such as total organic carbon (TOC), S2, and hydrogen index (HI). The value of TOC, S2, and HI showed an increasing trend from the bottom to the surface. Source analysis results showed that the source of PAHs was combustion. Moreover, the correlation analysis of PBDEs, PAHs, and annual average temperature with S2 and HI showed that BDE-202, BDE-201, BDE-183, and BDE-154 were negatively correlated with S2 and HI, while BDE-85 and BDE-47 were positively correlated. There was no significant correlations of PAHs with S2 and HI, which is related to the disturbance of sediments. It is interesting that significantly positive correlation of HI with five-year moving averages of the air temperature was demonstrated, demonstrating that the climate warming enhanced the increase of algae in the Poyang Lake.

A semi-batch reactor was used to carry out the pyrolysis of Ageratum conyzoides. The outcome of pyrolysis parameters vis temperature (350-600 degrees C); heating rate (25-100 degrees C min(-1)) and sweeping gas (N-2) flow rate (0.1-0.5 L min(-1)) were observed on the product yield. The fixed particle size of 0.425 mm was maintained throughout the pyrolysis process. The maximum pyrolytic-oil yield of 37.55 mass% was achieved at a temperature of 525 degrees C under a constant heating rate and sweeping gas flow rate of 75 degrees C min(-1) and 0.2 L min(-1). Biomass, biochar, pyrolytic-oil and pyrolysis-gas were characterized through CHNS and O, FT-IR, TG and DTG, SEM-EDX, BET, XRD, H-1-NMR and GC-MS analysers. The A. conyzoides pyrolytic-oil and biochar has an empirical formula of CH1.32O0.82 and CH0.82O0.44 and a high heating value of 17.79 MJ kg(-1) and 22.93 MJ kg(-1). Presence of lower and higher hydrocarbon compounds in pyrolytic-oil makes it a suitable feedstock for the production of various chemicals. High alkalinity and carbonaceous nature of biochar make it suitable for the modification of soil or can be utilized as a solid fuel. The pyrolysis-gas has a gross calorific value of 5.32 MJ m(-3) and can be utilized as an alternative gaseous energy source.

Pearl-farming leads to significant plastic pollution in French Polynesia (FP) as the end of life of most farming gear is currently poorly managed. Plastic debris released into the aquatic environment accumulates, with potentially detrimental effects on the lagoon ecosystem and pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, a species of ecological, commercial and social value. Here, we tested the effects of leachates from new (N) and aged (A) plastic pearl-farming gear (spat collector and synthetic rope) obtained after 24 h and 120 h incubation, on the embryo-larval development of the pearl oyster using an in-vitro assay. Embryos were exposed for 24 h and 48 h to a negative control (0) and the leachate from 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 g of plastic. L-1. After 24 h exposure to leachate at 100 g.L-1, effects were observed on embryo development (-38% to -60% of formed larvae) and mortality (+72% to +82%). Chemical analyses of plastic gear indicated the presence of 26 compounds, consisting of organic contaminants (PAHs) and additives (mainly phthalates). Screening of leachates demonstrated that these compounds leach into the surrounding seawater with an additional detection of pesticides. Higher levels of phthalates were measured in leachates obtained from new (6.7-9.1 mg.L-1) than from aged (0.4-0.5 mg.L-1) plastics, which could be part of the explanation of the clear difference in toxicity observed after 48 h exposure at lower concentrations (0.1-10 g.L-1), associated with mortality ranging from 26 to 86% and 17-28%, respectively. Overall, this study suggests that plastic gear used in the pearl-farming industry releases significant amounts of hazardous chemicals over their lifetime, which may affect pearl oyster development that call for in-situ exploration. UV-curable inks, coatings, and adhesives are being increasingly used in food packaging systems. When exposed to UV energy, UV-photoinitiators (PI’s) present in the formulations produce free radicals which catalyze polymerization of monomers and pre-polymers into resins. In addition to photopolymerization, other free radical reactions occur in these systems resulting in the formation of chemically varied photolytic decomposition products, many of which are low molecular weight chemical species with high migration potential. This research conducted model experiments in which 24 commonly used PI’s were exposed to UV-energy at the typical upper limit of commercial UV-printing press conditions. UV-irradiated PI’s were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electrospray-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in order to identify photolytic decomposition products. Subsequently, migration studies of 258 UV-cure food packaging samples were conducted using GC-MS; PI’s and photolytic decomposition products were found in nearly all samples analyzed. One hundred-thirteen photolytic decomposition products were identified. Eighteen intact PI’s and 21 photolytic decomposition products were observed as migrants from the 258 samples analyzed, and these were evaluated for frequency of occurrence and migratory concentration range. The most commonly observed PI’s were 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone and benzophenone. The most commonly observed photolytic decomposition products were 2,4,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde and 1-phenyl-2-butanone. This compilation of PI photolytic decomposition data and associated migration data will aid industry in identifying and tracing non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in food packaging materials.

Name: Diphenyl oxide. I found the field of Engineering; Environmental Sciences & Ecology very interesting. Saw the article Lactational exposure of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and its association with infant developmental measurements published in 2020.0, Reprint Addresses Zhang, YH (corresponding author), Fudan Univ, Sch Publ Hlth, Dept Environm Hlth, POB 249,138 Yixueyuan Rd, Shanghai 20032, Peoples R China.. This study was designed to assess the effect of lactational polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) exposure on early physical development of both healthy and fetal growth restriction (FGR) infants. Z scores of head circumference-for-age (ZHC), length-for-age (ZLEN), weight-for-age (ZWEI) and weight-for-length (ZWFL) were calculated according to the WHO Child Growth Standards. FGR infants had a higher PBDE exposure level and faster growth speed from 42 days to 6 months compared with healthy infants. Exposure of lower brominated BDEs (BDE28 similar to 154) and the sum of 18 BDE congeners (BDE28 similar to 209) negatively associated with ZHC [mean difference estimate (95 % CI): -0.71 (-1.22, -0.22) and -0.81 (-1.31, -0.33)] in FGR boys. Both BDE153 and BDE196 exposure had a significant correlation with ZLEN of boys in FGR group [mean difference estimate (95 % CI): -0.28 (-0.48, -0.07) and -0.52 (-0.91, -0.14)]. Each 10 ng/g lipid increase in the concentrations of BDE154 were respectively associated with 0.16 increase in ZWEI among boys in healthy group. No significant association was found in girls. Lactational PBDE exposure had effects on the early growth of both FGR and healthy infants. The encouragement of breastfeeding should therefore be considered in conjunction with PBDE contamination levels.
