Introduction: Gestational exposure to chemical mixtures, which is prevalent among pregnant women, may be associated with adverse childhood neurodevelopment. However, few studies have examined relations between gestational chemical mixture exposure and children’s cognitive abilities. Methods: In a cohort of 253 pregnant women and their children from Cincinnati, OH (enrolled 2003-2006), we quantified biomarker concentrations of 43 metals, phthalates, phenols, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, and environmental tobacco smoke in blood or urine. Using k-means clustering and principal component (PC) analysis, we characterized chemical mixtures among pregnant women. We assessed children’s cognitive abilities using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-III and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for ChildrenIV at ages 5 and 8 years, respectively. We estimated covariate-adjusted differences in children’s cognitive ability scores]=cross clusters, and with increasing PC scores and individual biomarker concentrations. Results: Geometric mean biomarker concentrations were generally highest, intermediate, and lowest among women in clusters 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Children born to women in clusters 1 and 2 had 5.1 (95% CI: 9.4,-0.8) and 2.0 (95% CI: 5.5, 1,4) lower performance IQ scores compared to children in cluster 3, respectively. PC scores and individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not associated with cognitive abilities. Conclusions: In this cohort, combined prenatal exposure to phenols, certain phthalates, pesticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances was inversely associated with children’s cognition, but some individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not. Additional studies should determine if the aggregate impact of these chemicals on cognition is different from their individual effects.

A multitude of metrics exist to assign scores to synthetic routes within computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools. A quantitative scoring method is necessary to identify the most promising synthetic approaches to a molecule. However, current CASP tools are limited in their capacity to evaluate reaction selectivity and are unable to fully account for the effect of side products on the purification sequences associated with chemical syntheses. We develop a novel quantitative metric called ExtractionScore for evaluating synthetic routes based on the predicted identities of side products as well as the separability of major and side products by liquid-liquid extraction based on chemical property prediction. By comparing industrially practiced routes to a collection of 200 pharmaceutically relevant compounds with routes suggested by state-of-the-art CASP software, we show that ExtractionScore may improve retrosynthetic recommendations by incorporating information about the formation of side products.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), present in the environment, animals, and humans. Their levels, distribution, and human exposure have been studied extensively, and over the last decade, various legal measures have been taken to prohibit or minimize their production and use due to the increasing amount of evidence of their harmful effects on human and animal health. Our aim here was to make a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the levels and distribution of PBDEs in the aquatic environment, air, and soil, in indoor dust, and in humans. To fulfill this, we searched through Web of Science for literature data reported in the last five years (2015-2019) on levels of at least six key PBDE congeners in abovementioned matrices. According to our summarized data, significant PBDE mass concentrations/fractions are still being detected in various sample types across the world, which implies that PBDE contamination is an ongoing problem. Secondary sources of PBDEs like contaminated soils and landfills, especially those with electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), represent a particular risk to the future and therefore require a special attention of scientists.

The challenge of coating organic photovoltaics (OPV) from green solvents is to achieve the required nanostructured interpenetrating network of donor and acceptor domains based on a rational choice of solvent approach as opposed to the usual trial-and-error methods. We demonstrate here that we can achieve a bicontinuous interpenetrating network with nanoscale phase separation for the chosen donor-acceptor material system poly[2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline-5,8-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl]:phenyl-C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (TQ1:PC61BM) when processing from green solvent ink formulations. This structure is achieved by first calculating the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of the donor and acceptor materials, followed by careful choice of solvents with selective relative solubilities for the two materials based on the desired order of precipitation necessary for forming a nanostructured interdigitated network morphology. We found that the relative distances in Hansen space (R-a) between TQ1 and the primary solvent, on the one hand, and PC61BM and the primary solvent, on the other hand, could be correlated to the donor-acceptor morphology for the formulations based on the solvents d-limonene, anisole, and 2-methyl anisole, as well as the halogenated reference solvent o-dichlorobenzene. This nanostructured blend film morphology was characterised with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the film surface composition was analysed by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Hansen solubility theory, based on solution thermodynamics, has been used and we propose an HSP-based method that is a general platform for the rational design of ink formulations for solution-based organic electronics, in particular facilitating the green solvent transition of organic photovoltaics. Our results show that the bulk heterojunction morphology for a donor-acceptor system processed from customised solvent mixtures can be predicted by the HSP-based method with good reliability.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), a promising strategy for converting electricity to value-added H-2 fuel, is a key half reaction of the overall water splitting. However, HER is suffering from the sluggish kinetics in alkaline. We here demonstrate a highly efficient catalyst for alkaline HER via surface and interface engineering of RhOOH nanosheets (NSs). The surface structure of RhOOH NSs can be precisely tuned by altering the cyclic voltammogram cycles (CVs) in the activation process, leading to the formation of strongly synergized RhOOH/Rh interface for boosted HER activity in alkaline. The optimized catalyst exhibits a promising alkaline HER performance with overpotential of 18 mV at current density of 10 mA center dot cm(2) and Tafel slope of 19.3 mV center dot dec(-1) in 1 M KOH, which surpasses the commercial Pt/C, Rh NSs/C and RhOOH NSs/C. Detailed experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the synergy between RhOOH and Rh significantly promotes the H2O adsorption/ dissociation to form Had and the Had desorption to produce H-2.

Herein, we conceptualized a transient mediator approach that has the capability of para-selective C-H functionalization of monosubstituted aromatics. This approach is enabled by in situ generation of a versatile sulfonium salt via highly electrophilic phenoxathiine or thianthrene dication intermediate which can be readily generated from its sulfoxide with tri-fluoromethanesulfonic anhydride. Preliminary mechanistic study implied that the remarkable para selectivity might be related to the incredible electrophilicity of thianthrene dication intermediate. The versatility of this approach was demonstrated via para-borylation of various monosubstituted simple aromatics combining the sulfonium salt formation with further photocatalyzed transformation.

Methods for direct C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes are rare, despite the importance of trifluoromethoxylated compounds for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and material sciences. Especially selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines remains a formidable challenge. Here we show a general late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes as limiting reagent with trifluoromethoxide anion. The reaction is mediated by silver salts under mild reaction conditions, exhibiting broad substrate scope and wide functional-group compatibility. In addition, ortho-position selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines is observed. The method is not only applicable to the gram-scale synthesis of trifluoromethoxylated products but also allows efficient late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of marketed small-molecule drugs, common pharmacophores and natural products. Selective C-H trifluoromethoxylation of pyridines remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Here, the authors report a silver-mediated late-stage C-H trifluoromethoxylation of arenes and heteroarenes as limiting reagents with trifluoromethoxide anion.

In this study, a well-defined, novel NHC-Ni complex was developed and used to catalyze the N-arylation of alkyl- and arylamines with arylboronic acids in a rare version of Chan-Lam coupling. Although the same coupling using copper catalysts has been widely studied, the nickel-catalyzed version is rare and normally requires 10-20 mol% catalyst loading. This novel NHC-Ni complex in combination with 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, however, proved to be an effective catalyst that lowered the required catalyst loading to only 2.0 mol%. Short-chain oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs) (molecular formula: H3CO-(CH2O)(n)-CH3, where n = 3-5) have previously been studied as diesel-like fuels and fuel additives. OMEs can be produced from sustainably sourced methanol, and tests indicate that they are neither genotoxic nor mutagenic. In this report, their potential as solvents has been investigated to expand the bio-derived solvent space. According to traditional solvatochromic parameters, a commercial mixture of OME3-5 and its individual components (OME3, OME4, and OME5) have solvation properties similar to problematic industrial ether solvents such as 1,4-dioxane. Peroxide formation, one of the chief dangers of classical ether solvents, was found to occur much more slowly in OMEs than in conventional solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THE), demonstrating an improved safety profile. The commercial OME3-5 mixture was found to be broadly miscible with organic solvents but immiscible with water, suggesting potential application in aqueous extractions. It performed well in the dissolution of polystyrene and removal of paints and coatings, indicating OME3-5 may suitable to replace dichloromethane in polymer recycling, polymer welding, and cleaning applications. To further demonstrate applicability as a solvent, this mixture was shown to facilitate a model Suzuki coupling reaction at rates similar to cyclopentyl methyl ether, which is currently marketed as a green ether. Finally, OME3-5 proved a suitable solvent for enzymatic polymerization, giving high yields, moderately high degrees of polymerization, and remarkably narrow dispersity values.

The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.
