The distribution and toxic equivalents (TEQs) of brominated and chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs) in soils from Agbogbloshie e-waste site (Ghana) were investigated. The composition of brominated/chlorinated dibenzofurans (PXDFs) and diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, PCDEs, and PXDEs) was examined using two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry to elucidate possible formation pathways of dioxins from e-waste recycling. The highest concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs were found, respectively, in the open burning (1.3-380 ng/g dry weight) and dismantling areas (11-1000 ng/g dry weight) and were comparable to the highest reported for informal e-waste sites. PXDFs and PXDEs were detected at up to the range of hundreds of nanograms per gram. The homologue profiles suggest that PXDFs were formed mainly from PBDFs through successive Br-to-Cl exchange. However, monobromo-PCDFs were also derived from de-novo-generated PCDFs in open burning areas. PBDFs contributed similar or higher TEQs (7.9-5400 pg/g dry weight) compared with PCDD/Fs (6.8-5200 pg/g dry weight), whereas PXDFs were also substantial TEQ contributors in open burning areas. The high TEQs of PBDFs in the dismantling area (120-5200 pg/g dry weight) indicate the need to consider brominated dioxins besides chlorinated dioxins in future studies on health implications for e-waste workers and local residents.

The relative abundances of compound classes (e.g. CHO1, CHO2 and CHNO1) in fossil fuels have been widely used in previous researches based on the data from mass spectrometry (MS). However, such observations are susceptible to the ionization bias of MS due to the variation of ionization efficiency, which may affect the downstream quantitative analysis. Many efforts have been devoted to investigating the ionization efficiencies of a variety of model compounds, but not complex and diverse mixtures. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how quantitatively ionization bias affects the MS analysis of complex mixtures. In this study, ionization bias was preliminarily investigated by comparing the elemental compositions obtained from MS-analysis via different ionization methods with the data acquired by a standard elemental analyzer. A coal-derived liquid and mixtures of five model compounds were ionized by atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI), electrospray ionization or direct analysis in real-time, followed by analyzing using a high-resolution Orbitrap MS to obtain elemental compositions. MS-based results via APCI ion source showed the closest elemental compositions to those obtained from the elemental analyzer. For the MS-based analysis, the abundances of S-and O-containing compounds were significantly lower and that of N-containing compounds was clearly higher compared to ultimate analysis. The abundances of compound classes were adjusted to provide a closer approximation of the actual contents, which might better serve for the downstream quantitative analysis. Although absolute quantification still needs additional work, the adjusted MS-based analysis provides not only the molecular level data, but also a better quantification ability compared to previous analytical approaches.

A rapid, sensitive, and practical QuEChERS method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 chemical adjuvant residues in samples of fruits (apple, nectarine, grape) and vegetables (tomato, cucumber, spinach). All target compounds were separated in less than 16 min. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile, and the types of extraction salt and cleanup sorbent were optimized. The optimized method was validated by evaluating the linearity, accuracy, precision, and matrix effect. The recoveries of the 16 pesticides adjuvants ranged from 61.2 to 116.3% with relative standard deviations lower than 11.6%. Limits of detection ranged from 0.21 to 3.02 mu g/kg, and limits of quantification ranged from 0.71 to 10.07 mu g/kg. Finally, the developed method was successfully employed to identify and quantify pesticide adjuvant residues in the analysis of 30 real fruit and vegetable samples.

The coupling reactions of phenols and nitrogen hetereocycles with aryl halide were catalyzed by a highly active, readily available and easily recoverable heterogeneous Cu catalyst which was prepared by simply stirring an suspension of chitosan in solvent with copper compound. The result showed that chitosan@Cu2O catalyst catalyzed the coupling reactions of aryl halides with phenols and nitrogen hetereocycles to readily give the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. The highly active catalyst can be reused many times without losing its catalytic activity.

A multitude of metrics exist to assign scores to synthetic routes within computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools. A quantitative scoring method is necessary to identify the most promising synthetic approaches to a molecule. However, current CASP tools are limited in their capacity to evaluate reaction selectivity and are unable to fully account for the effect of side products on the purification sequences associated with chemical syntheses. We develop a novel quantitative metric called ExtractionScore for evaluating synthetic routes based on the predicted identities of side products as well as the separability of major and side products by liquid-liquid extraction based on chemical property prediction. By comparing industrially practiced routes to a collection of 200 pharmaceutically relevant compounds with routes suggested by state-of-the-art CASP software, we show that ExtractionScore may improve retrosynthetic recommendations by incorporating information about the formation of side products.

Pb-210-dated sediment cores and surface sediments from Lake Chapala (LC), Mexico, were analyzed to assess the temporal trends in concentrations and fluxes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PAHs, PCBs and PBDEs). Total sediment concentrations of PAHs (95-1,482 ng g(-1)), PCBs (9-27 ng g(-1)) and PBDEs (0.2-2.5 ng g(-1)) were indicative of moderate to intense contamination. The POP concentrations have progressively increased since the 1990s. The light molecular weight PAHs, and the prevalence of PCB congeners with low-chlorination levels (e.g., di- to tri-CB) and low-to medium-brominated (tri- to penta-BDE) PBDEs in most sections of the sediment profiles, suggested that these POPs have most likely reached these sediments by long-range atmospheric transport from distant sources; although the significant presence of heavier PAH, PCB and PBDE congeners in the topmost sediments, indicate that other nearby and local sources (soil erosion from the catchment, urban and industrial wastewaters discharges, as well as navigation) might have also contributed to the recent input of POPs to LC. Taking into account the relevance of LC as regional freshwater supply and commercial fishing ground, the potential risk posed by the organic contaminated sediments to the biota and human population should not be underestimated.

To facilitate faster selectivity evaluation of wall-coated, open-tubular columns using the solvation parameter model a reduced set of calibration compounds is identified and validated for the temperature ranges 60-140 degrees C and 160-260 degrees C. The Kennard-Stone uniform mapping algorithm is used to identify the calibration compounds from a larger database of compounds with known retention properties previously adopted for column selectivity evaluation. Thirty-five compounds for each temperature range are required to minimize the standard deviation of the system constants used for selectivity evaluation and to minimize differences between system constants determined by conventional calibration and the reduced calibration compounds. The models for the reduced calibration compounds on ten siloxane-based and poly(ethylene glycol) stationary phases have a coefficient of determination of 0.984 to 0.998 and standard error of the estimate of 0.012 to 0.30. The predictive capability of models is evaluated for the reduced sets of calibration compounds using external test sets with ranking of the calibration models by changes in the average error, average absolute error and root mean square error of prediction for the test sets. For the selected thirty-five reduced calibration compounds the range for the average absolute error was 0.014 to 0.033 and 0.016 to 0.040 for the root mean square error of prediction for the independent test sets. In this study, we have designed and synthesized a low-bandgap polymer, DPP-Qx, using quinoxaline (Qx), a non-alkylated weak acceptor, with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as an electron donor. The incorporation of Qx into DPP leads to the highest occupied molecular orbital level at -5.1 eV with a narrow optical bandgap (1.25 eV). The synthesized polymer is utilized in photovoltaics, and the photovoltaic properties are studied. This DPP-Qx with fullerene acceptors in polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibits efficiency of 3.26%. Moreover, a minimum energy loss of 0.57 eV along with high extended external quantum efficiency is achieved with the DPP-Qx electron donor. The thermal, electrical and optical properties, energy levels and hole mobility of the synthesized polymer are studied and discussed.

Electrophilic C-H borylation of arenes using boron triiodide has been developed. This reaction proceeded smoothly in the absence of additives, and the diiodoboryl group was installed at the most sterically accessible carbon, where the HOMO is localized to a certain extent. Moreover, regioselective multiple borylation of polycyclic aromatic compounds was achieved by using excess boron triiodide. The borylated intermediates were transformed into a variety of arylboron compounds such as arylboronates, boronic acids, and trifluoroborates.

The objective of this study was to assess the levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury (T-Hg) in the blubber and skin, respectively, of the free-ranging bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, from the Normanno-Breton Gulf, one of the largest identified coastal population in Europe. Among all the POPs analysed in this study, the Sigma NDL-PCBs were the most abundant compounds found in the blubber (mean: 1.33 x 10(5) -0.65 x 10(5) ng.g(-1) lipid weight (lw) for males and females respectively), followed by Sigma DDX (1.11 x 10(4) -4.67 x 10(3) ng.g(-1 )lw) > Sigma DL-PCBs (8.06 x 10(3)-2.62 x 10(3) ng.g(-1 )lw) >Sigma PBDEs (1.95 x 10(3) -0.64 x 10(3) ng.g(-1) lw) > dieldrin (1.86 x 10(3)-0.18 x 10(3) ng.g(-1 )lw) >Sigma endosulfan (405-62 ng.g(-1 )lw) > HCB (86-52 ng.g(-1 )lw) > Sigma HCHs (47-60 ng. g(-1) lw) >Sigma chlordane (24-0.97 ng.g(-1 )lw) >Sigma PCDFs (0.3-0.1 ng.g(-1 )lw) >Sigma PCDDs (0.06-0.05 ng.g(-1) lw). The T-Hg concentrations were highly variable between individuals (2.45 x 10(3) ng.g(-1) to 21.3 x 10(3) ng.g(-1) dry weight, dw). The reported concentrations are among the highest reported for cetaceans. We strongly recommend that the Normanno-Breton Gulf be a special area of conservation (cSAC) candidate because it contains the last large European population of bottlenose dolphins (rare or threatened within a European context) designated under the EC Habitats Directive.
