We present the synthesis of lanthanum nitrate nanoparticles via the polyol method. A crystallographic study of La(NO3)(3)center dot 4H(2)O nanoparticles was carried out using the Rietveld method and XRD to detect the phases of the yield: alpha (monoclinic) and beta (orthorhombic) phases were obtained. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a unique dehydration process in the 65 degrees C-245 degrees C temperature range and a dehydroxylation phase in the 333 degrees C-558 degrees C temperature range. Using TEM-EDX, and DLS, the purity of the material was evaluated; a spherical shape morphology and monodispersity were observed. The absorbance at 1340-1440 cm(-1) and 1500-1600 cm(-1) (IR regions) of the lanthanum nanoparticles was deconvolved to increase the resolution of the chemical imprint in these regions.

Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing worldwide. Recent studies have suggested that environmental factors, such as exposure to brominated flame retardants (BFRs), could play a role in the epidemic of T2D. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the dietary exposure to BFRs (Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Polybromodiphenylether (PBDE)) and T2D risk in the E3N prospective cohort of French women. Research design and methods: Overall, 71,415 women followed for 19 years were included in the study. We performed Cox regression models to analyze the association between dietary exposure to BFRs and T2D risk. Results: Overall 71,415 women were included and 3667 (5.13%) developed a T2D during follow-up. The mean dietary exposure to HBCD and to PBDE was 0.22 ng/kg body weight (BW)/day and 1.21 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. There was a positive linear association between dietary exposure to HBCD and T2D risk starting from the 2nd quintile group (HR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.06-1.30) to the 5th quintile group (HR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.29-1.67) when compared to the 1st quintile group. We also found positive although non-linear associations between dietary exposure to PBDE and T2D risk, with an increased HR only for the 2nd and 4th vs. 1st quintile groups (HR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.02-1.24, and HR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.08-1.34, respectively). Conclusion: The findings suggest an association between dietary exposure to BFRs and T2D risk, highlighting the importance of further investigating this association the long-term health effects of endocrine disruptors in the general population. Additional studies are needed to reproduce these findings in other populations and clarify the underlying biological mechanisms.

Atmospheric fine particle (PM2.5) samples were collected over a whole year (April 2016 – March 2017) across five sampling locations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, to investigate the occurrence of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of Sigma(9)NBFRs were in the range of 0.63-104 pg/m(3) (15.6 +/- 16.8 pg/m(3)) in atmospheric PM2.5, while the levels of Sigma 9PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) ranged from 0.05 to 19.1 pg/m(3) (2.9 +/- 3.8 pg/m(3)) and BDE-209 concentrations ranged from 0.88 to 138 pg/m(3) (22 +/- 28 pg/m(3)). Relatively higher levels of NBFRs and PBDEs were found at urban sampling sites in Beijing City and Shijiazhuang City. Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) and BDE-209 were the dominant compounds with the relative abundances of 72% in Sigma(9)NBFRs and 90% in Sigma 10PBDEs, respectively. Generally, the levels of most target BFRs in summer were lower than those in other seasons. However, there were no notable seasonal differences in levels of DBDPE and BDE-209 in atmospheric PM2.5 samples across the BTH region. Significant and positive correlations were found between the concentrations of BFRs and PM2.5. Daily human exposure via inhalation revealed that children have a higher probability of suffering from the adverse effects of BFRs than that of adults. In addition, residents living near sampling locations across the BTH region may suffer high exposure risks to BDE-209 and NBFRs.

Quantum dots (QDs) were suggested a decade ago as a means of spectral decoy to divert rocket attacks from flying objects such as satellites but have not yet found industrial applications. A possible reason is that these advanced nanomaterials are unstable in the long-term under the forces exhibited on a flying object and the nanoparticles might agglomerate to form larger microparticles, which have a different, unwanted spectral footprint. This work proposes an on-board (in situ) real-time synthesis of quantum dots on a satellite as a result of an interdisciplinary innovation that combines nanomaterial chemistry, heating and mixing with batch microfluidics, and microfabrication of a miniaturized chip. We employed a microchip as the in situ reaction chamber due to its capability of fast, compact synthesis. The implementation of the space micro-reactor, on the other hand, leads to other fundamental challenges that need to be solved such as robust pump-free fluid motion and quick synthesis of quantum dots in less than 180 s which is equivalent to the typical time a rocket needs to reach the satellite from the ground. Additionally, quantum dots need to be tailored in the type of material and size to replicate the spectral signal of the to-beprotected space asset while the synthesis process needs to be robust and resilient to work reliably and automatically under the demanding conditions of a flying object. In this study, we selected cadmium selenide (CdSe) and lead selenide (PbSe) as the materials of choice. Our synthesis process aims to simplify and tailor CdSe and PbSe quantum dots to match the above demands. The produced quantum dots were characterized by their wavelength emission spectra and high-angle annular dark-held scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF STEM) images. Results show that both CdSe and PbSe quantum dots have been successfully synthesized within a maximum of 10 minutes. While the chosen CdSe-based synthesis was unable to reach IR-emitting sizes within several minutes, we managed to meet all other research targets. The synthesized PbSe 013s were able to reach the mock-spectrum and could produce an emission wavelength peak from 1200 to 1400 nm. This work finally provides insights into the limits of batch synthesis in a microfabricated nanodot chip, such as the need to improve reproducibility and enhance particle growth. Based on this learning, we propose a self-priming flow microchip synthesis that can capitalize on mixing as a key asset to overcome those limits.

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

High-performance polymer semiconductors generally should have wide absorption, good solution processability, and fine-tuned physicochemical properties in order to achieve satisfying photovoltaic performance. Herein, two new alkynyl-functionalized electron donor units, 3-alkyl-3′-alkynyl-2,2′-bithiophene (TRTRy) and 3-alkoxy-3′-alkynyl-2,2′-bithiophene (TORTRy), were invented through the combination of the alkynyl side chain with the alkyl or alkoxy side chain, respectively. Copolymerization of these bithiophenes with difluorobenzothiadiazole (ffBT) afforded polymers ffBT-TRTRy and ffBT-TORTRy, respectively. When applied into polymer solar cells (PSCs), devices using ffBT-TRTRy donor polymer display a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.34% with a short-circuit current (J(sc)) of 7.46 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.93 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 34.0%. The TORTRy containing polymer ffBT-TORTRy affords PSCs with a much improved PCE of 6.60% with a higher J(sc) of 15.09 mA cm(-2), a larger FF of 58.3%, and a V-oc of 0.75 V. The performance improvement of PSC devices using ffBT-TORTRy donor is mainly attributed to the simultaneous realization of higher J(sc) and FF, while maintaining a good V-oc. The results demonstrate that alkynyl-functionalized H-H bithiophenes are promising building blocks for efficient PSCs.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) were measured in eleven mollusk species collected from the Chinese Bohai Sea. PBDEs and AHFRs were detected in all species, and their average total concentrations were in the range of 22.5-355 and 10.0-84.3 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) were the dominant halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), contributing 22.5% to 73.6% and 3.1% to 38.3% of the total HFRs, respectively. The levels of PBDEs and AHFRs were moderate to high from a global perspective. Interspecific differences in the accumulation of PBDEs and AHFRs were characterized by heat map and cluster analysis. Composition profile differences were also observed, with higher proportions of AHFRs in gastropods than in bivalves. These species-specific differences in concentrations and profiles in mollusks were attributed to different species traits, including feeding habit, trophic level, and metabolic potential.

Palladium nitrsosyl carboxylates Pd-3(NO)(2)(CX3CO2)(4)(ArH)(2) (I: X=Cl, Ar=Ph; II: X=F, Ar=Tol) are found to be effective catalysts for C-H/C-H oxidative homocoupling of arenes bearing electron-donor as well as electron-withdrawing groups (EWG). Trifluoroacetate complex II is found to be more promising due to higher stability under the reaction conditions. Complex II also shows high performance in intramolecular coupling in diarylsulfides, diarylethers and diarylamines giving corresponding dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans and carbazoles with yields ranged from moderate to high. The plausible mechanism is studied by DFT computational analysis basing on Pd-3 linear complexes as major active species. It was found that two deprotonation steps proceed in two different ways: for the first deprotonation SEAr is most probable pathway while for the second one concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) is preferable. Several families of herbicides, especially diphenyl ether (DPE) and pyrimidinedione, target the plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathways and in particular one key enzyme, protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO). When plants are treated with DPE or pyrimidinedione, an accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, the first photosensitizer of this pathway, is observed in cytosol where it becomes very deleterious under light. Indeed these herbicides trigger plant death in two distinct ways: (i) inhibition of chlorophylls and heme syntheses and (ii) a huge accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in cytosol. Recently, a strategy based on plant transgenesis that induces deregulation of the tetrapyrrole pathway by up- or down-regulation of genes encoding enzymes, such as glutamyl-tRNA reductase, porphobilinogen deaminase and PPO, has been developed. Against all expectations, only transgenic crops overexpressing PPO showed resistance to DPE and pyrimidinedione. This herbicide resistance of transgenic crops leads to the hypothesis that the overall consumption of herbicides will be reduced as previously reported for glyphosate-resistant transgenic crops. In this review, after a rapid presentation of plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, we show how only PPO enzyme can be the target of DPE and how transgenic crops can be further resistant not only to herbicide but also to abiotic stress such as drought or chilling. Keeping in mind that this approach is mostly prohibited in Europe, we attempt to discuss it to interest the scientific community, from plant physiologists to chemists, who work on the interface of photosensitizer optimization and agriculture.
