We have designed a functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO topology as a support, with an extremely high surface area, adjustable pore sizes and stable crystalline coordination polymeric structure and implanted copper (Cu) nanoparticles thereon. The core three dimensional Zr-derived MOF (UiO-66-NH2) was modified with a biguanidine moiety following a covalent post-functionalization approach. The morphological and physicochemical features of the material were determined using analytical methods such as FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDX, atomic mapping, XRD and ICP-OES. The SEM and XRD results justified the unaffected morphology of Zr-MOF after structural modifications. The as-synthesized UiO-66-biguanidine/Cu nanocomposite was catalytically explored in the aryl and heteroaryl Buchwald-Hartwig C-N and Ullmann type C-O cross coupling reactions with excellent yields. A library of biaryl amine and biaryl ethers was synthesized over the catalyst under mild and green conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was isolated by centrifugation and recycled 11 times with no significant copper leaching or change in its activity.

Land application of composted municipal solid waste (C-MSW) can divert waste from landfill but can also be a route of entry into the environment for contaminants. This study presents a preliminary human health and ecological risk assessment for organic contaminants in C-MSW generated in New South Wales, Australia, to identify and prioritise contaminants of concern. Following an initial screening assessment, terrestrial and aquatic risks were assessed by predicted soil and water concentrations, respectively. The assessment ranked contaminants as very high, high, medium or low priority. A qualitative review was then used to identify contaminants of concern, which included polybrominated diphenyl ethers, phthalates, bisphenol A and dibutyltin. Phenol was initially categorised as very high priority but due to its rapid degradation in soil, this is likely to be overly-conservative. The herbicides dicamba and MCPA were categorised as medium priority or higher but due to uncertainties in the data, these categories are also likely to be overly-conservative. A range of contaminants had concentrations below the screening criteria and were therefore considered low risk. Many contaminants were below the limit of reporting in all samples and were therefore not considered to be sufficiently distributed in the material to pose a risk. Some contaminants were detected in the material but could not be assessed as no criteria were available. The information from this study can be used by regulators when managing land application of C-MSW to ensure that the risks to human health and the environment are managed appropriately. Lignin may serve as a renewable feedstock for the production of chemicals and fuels if mild, scalable processes for its depolymerization can be devised. The use of small organic thiols represents a bioinspired strategy to cleave the beta-O-4 bond, the most common linkage in lignin. In the present study, synthetic beta-O-4 linked polymers were treated with organic thiols, yielding up to 90 % cleaved monomer products. Lignin extracted from poplar was also treated with organic thiols resulting in molecular weight reductions as high as 65 % (M-n) in oxidized lignin. Thiol-based cleavage of other lignin linkages was also explored in small-molecule model systems to uncover additional potential pathways by which thiols might depolymerize lignin. The success of thiol-mediated cleavage on model dimers, polymers, and biomass-derived lignin illustrates the potential utility of small redox-active molecules to penetrate complex polymer matrices for depolymerization and subsequent valorization of lignin into fuels and chemicals.

The synthesis and characterization of the room-temperature and solution-stable silylpalladium cations (PCy3)(2)Pd-SiR3+(C6F5)(4)B- (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2) and (Xantphos)Pd-SiR3+(BAr4f) (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2; Xant-phos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene; BAr4f = (3,5-(CF3)(2)C6H3)(4)B-) are reported. Spectroscopic and ligand addition experiments suggest that silylpalladium complexes of the type (PCy3) Pd-SiR3+ are three-coordinate and T-shaped. Addition of dialkyl ethers to both the PCy3 and Xantphos-based silylpalladium cations resulted in the cleavage of C(sp(3))-O bonds and the generation of cationic Pd-alkyl complexes. Mechanistically enabling is the ability of silylpalladium cations to behave as sources of both electrophilic silylium ions and nucleophilic LnPd(0).

A new approach for the reduction of aryl ammonium salts to arenes or aryl silanes using nickel catalysis is reported. This method displays excellent ligand-controlled selectivity based on the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand employed. Utilizing a large NHC in non-polar solvents generates aryl silanes, while small NHCs in polar solvents promote reduction to arenes. Several classes of aryl silanes can be accessed from simple aniline building blocks, including those useful for cross-couplings, oxidations, and halogenations. The reaction conditions are mild, functional group tolerant, and provide efficient access to a variety of benzene derivatives.

Application In Synthesis of Diphenyl oxide. The Name is Diphenyl oxide. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 101-84-8.

Deep debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by visible light photocatalysis is still a challenge in the field of halogenated pollutants control. Here, an efficient photocatalyst (Pd/g-C3N4) was prepared by a simple impregnation-chemical reduction method with bulk g-C3N4 and PdCl2 as precursors. Under preferred reaction conditions (visible light irradiation for 120 min), the use of the 0.5% Pd/g-C3N4 composites (0.4 g L-1) yielded an almost complete debromination of BDE47 (10 mu mol L-1) in methanol-water mixture, while the debromination of BDE47 did not occur on pure g-C3N4. A Pd-promoted active H atom species attack and C-Br bond cleavage route was proposed according to the identified degradation intermediates. A catalytic mechanism was further clarified: Pd nanoparticles exerted affinity interaction with bromine atoms, and the storing of electrons on Pd would increase the binding interaction. In the debromination process, methanol acts as both a hole scavenger and a hydrogen donor to provide active H atom species through the reaction of H+ and photogenerated electrons on Pd nanoparticles. The initiation of BDE47 debromination on Pd nanoparticles required an induction period to enrich a critical amount of electrons for stretching the C-Br bond and its subsequent being attacked by active H atoms. The generated 2,2′-dibromodiphenyl ether (BDE4) would be further reduced to bromine-free products by hydro-debromination process or coupling reaction.

Intermetallic compounds of Al and Ru are exhibiting promising physical and chemical properties, such high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Compacted micron-sized Ru and Al powders or multilayer systems are usually the starting points for their synthesis. Nanoparticles are rarely applied in the preparation of such intermetallic compounds. Here we present the preparation of Ru aluminides starting from Al and Ru nanoparticles. Al particles showing diameters as small as 125 nm were synthesized via thermal decomposition of triisobutylaluminum in refluxing phenylether, while the Ru nanoparticles were prepared by thermal decomposition of Ru-3(CO)(12) at 300 degrees C in the presence of oleylamine. Both synthetic steps can be carried out subsequently in a one pot reaction and the resulting powders consisted of well-dispersed and intermixed Ru and Al particles. Upon thermal treatment of the mixed particles in an Ar atmosphere we observed the formation of multiphase products mainly consisting of Ru, RuAl, Ru2Al3 and RuAl2. The phase fractions were found to be dependent on the sample mass used for the reaction and the Al:Ru ratio. Ignition temperatures of the self-propagating reaction could be decreased to 300 degrees C in an ambient atmosphere. Accordingly, the preparation of Ru-Al intermetallic compounds starting from wet chemically synthesized Al and Ru nanoparticles was found to be readily possible, particularly under an atmosphere of ambient air.

High levels of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) have been found in the marine predatory seabird great skua (Stercorarius skua) from breeding colonies in the Northeastern Atlantic, with large unexplained inter-colony variation. The present study aimed at analyzing if the HOCs occurrence in breeding great skuas in remote colonies was explained by local baseline food web exposure determined by long-range transport, or by ecological factors such as diet specialization and relative trophic position in the breeding area. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was analyzed in plasma of 204 adult great skuas collected over two years (2008 and 2009) and 5 colonies across the North-Atlantic from Shetland to Svalbard. The HOCs levels in plasma ranged across two orders of magnitude, from 40 to 7600 ng/g (wet weight) and differed significantly across the great skua colonies. The variation in contaminant occurrence among colonies did not reflect long-range transport through a latitudinal or remoteness gradient, as the second northernmost colony (Bjornoya), had the highest contaminant concentrations. No latitudinal or remoteness gradient was evident in the contaminant pattern among the colonies. The contaminant levels increased significantly with increasing delta N-15 values, and regurgitated pellets of undigested prey suggested that great skuas with higher delta N-15 values had a higher proportion of bird prey in their diet, mostly seabirds. In contrast, great skuas from colonies with lower delta N-15 and lower contaminant level fed mostly on fish. The enrichment of delta N-13 increased with decreasing delta N-15 and lower contaminant levels. Therefore, individual behavior of great skuas, such as migration strategies and diet specialization, rather than long-range transport and thus baseline food web exposure, explain among and within colony variance in contaminant occurrence. A novel nanocomposite of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with graphene nanosheet (CoFe2O4/GN) is prepared as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The size of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles is about 3 nm, and the influence of CoFe2O4 on the electrochemical properties of graphene is studied. The CoFe2O4 nanoparticles anchored on graphene nanosheets can serve as spacers to prevent graphene aggregations and thereby provide efficient diffusion pathways and more active surface area for electrolyte molecules. Also, the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with substantial catalytic activity accelerate the reduction of triiodide. Meanwhile the graphene improves charge transfer during the catalytic process. Compared with CoFe2O4, graphene, and Pt electrodes, the CoFe2O4/GN electrode displays higher catalytic activity because of its minimal charge transfer resistance. The DSSCs fabricated with CoFe2O4/GN demonstrate an improved photoelectric conversion efficiency of 9.04% in comparison to Pt electrodes (6.54%). This study suggests that CoFe2O4/GN can replace expensive Pt electrodes for large-scale fabrication of low cost and high efficiency DSSCs. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
