Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.

I found the field of Thermodynamics; Energy & Fuels; Mechanics very interesting. Saw the article Introducing a novel liquid air cryogenic energy storage system using phase change material, solar parabolic trough collectors, and Kalina power cycle (process integration, pinch, and exergy analyses) published in 2021.0. COA of Formula: C12H10O, Reprint Addresses Ghorbani, B (corresponding author), Amol Univ Special Modern Technol, Fac Engn Modern Technol, Amol, Iran.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Today, using new energy storage systems for peak shaving and load leveling with the approach of maximizing the efficiency of energy systems is inevitable. In the present study, a cogeneration integrated structure of power and cooling using liquefied natural gas regasification and solar collectors is developed and analyzed. In this regard, the purposes can be achieved by producing liquid air at an off-peak time and storing it as a cryogenic energy storage system and recovering it on-peak time. This new integrated structure generates 11.66 MW power and 4.502 MW cooling at the on-peak time. A Kalina-based combined cooling and power cycle and a gas turbine power generation unit are used to generate power from liquid air. Phase change material is used to store the heat from the compressed air entering the liquefaction stage (at the off-peak time) and recovering it at the on-peak time as the heat source of the Kalina cycle. Also, the solar parabolic trough collector provided with Zahedan climatic conditions the heat required for the direct expansion section. The electrical storage, round-trip, energy storage, and exergy efficiencies of the proposed energy storage system are 57.62%, 45.44%, 79.87%, and 40.17%, respectively. The most exergy destruction belongs to the heat exchangers section, which accounts for 50.85% of the total exergy destruction. One of the important results of the parametric study is the increase of round-trip and electrical storage efficiencies up to 47.59% and 61.60%, respectively, by minimizing the pressure of the inlet air to the liquefaction stage while maximizing the pressure of the liquid air inlet to the power generation stage.

A micro fabricated chip-based wearable air sampler was used to monitor the personnel exposure of volatile chemical concentrations in microenvironments. Six teenagers participated in this study and 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including naphthalene, 3-decen-1-ol, hexanal, nonanal, methyl salicylate and limonene gave the highest abundance during routine daily activity. VOC exposure associated with daily activities and the location showed strong agreements with two of the participant’s results. One of these subjects had the highest exposure to methyl salicylate that was supported by the use of a topical analgesic balm containing this compound. Environmental based air quality monitoring followed by the personnel exposure studies provided additional evidence associated to the main locations where the participants traveled. Toluene concentrations observed at a gas station were exceptionally high, with the highest amount observed at 1213.1 ng m(-3). One subject had the highest exposure to toluene and the GPS data showed clear evidence of activities neighboring a gas station. This study shows that this wearable air sampler has potential applications including hazardous VOC exposure monitoring in occupational hazard assessment for certain professions, for example in industries that involve direct handling of petroleum products.

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

I found the field of Chemistry; Materials Science; Metallurgy & Metallurgical Engineering very interesting. Saw the article Al and Ni nanoparticles as precursors for Ni aluminides published in 2020.0. Quality Control of Diphenyl oxide, Reprint Addresses Kickelbick, G (corresponding author), Saarland Univ, Inorgan Solid State Chem, Campus C41, D-66123 Saarbrucken, Germany.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Aluminides, intermetallic compounds of Al with at least one additional element, are promising materials particularly for high-temperature applications due to their physical and chemical properties. They are typically prepared starting from the elements using compacted, micrometer sized powders or multilayer systems, while the application of nanoparticles as precursors is much more uncommon although the high interface area can have advantages in the reactivity of the materials. We prepared Ni aluminides starting from submicron Al particles and Ni nanoparticles applying a self-propagating reaction. Upon applying separately prepared particles multiphase products containing Ni, Ni3Al, NiAl, Ni2Al3 as well as NiAl3 were observed depending on the sample size and heating rates. The preparation of single phase NiAl was possible applying particle mixtures synthesized by a two-step protocol. In a first step, submicron Al particles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of triisobuty-laluminum. On the surface of the formed Al particles nanocrystalline Ni was deposited in a second step via thermal decomposition of bis(cycloocta-1,5-dien)nickel(0) resulting in the formation of well-mixed Ni-Al particle blends. Heating of powder compacts or loose powders under an atmosphere of Ar resulted in the formation of single phase NiAl at low as well as at high heating rates with no other intermetallic phases being present.

In this paper, two level III fugacity models are developed and applied using an environmental system containing six compartments, including air, aerosols, soil, water, suspended particulate matters (SPMs), and sediments, as a unit world. The first model, assumes equilibrium between air and aerosols and between water and SPMs. These assumptions lead to a four-fugacity model. The second model removes these two assumptions leading to a six-fugacity model. The two models, compared using four PBDE congeners, BDE-28, -99, -153, and -209, with a steady flux of gaseous congeners entering the air, lead to the following conclusions. 1. When the octanol-air partition coefficient (K-OA) is less than 10(11.4), the two models produce similar results; when K-OA > 10(11.4), and especially when K-OA > 10(12.5), the model results diverge significantly. 2. Chemicals are in an imposed equilibrium in the four-fugacity model, but in a steady state and not necessary an equilibrium in the six-fugacity model, between air and aerosols. 3. The results from the six-fugacity model indicate an internally consistent system with chemicals in steady state in all six compartments, whereas the four-fugacity model presents an internally inconsistent system where chemicals are in equilibrium but not a steady state between air and aerosols. 4. Chemicals are mass balanced in air and aerosols predicted by the six-fugacity model but not by the four-fugacity model. If the mass balance in air and aerosols is achieved in the four-fugacity model, the condition of equilibrium between air and aerosols will be no longer valid. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Pearl-farming leads to significant plastic pollution in French Polynesia (FP) as the end of life of most farming gear is currently poorly managed. Plastic debris released into the aquatic environment accumulates, with potentially detrimental effects on the lagoon ecosystem and pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, a species of ecological, commercial and social value. Here, we tested the effects of leachates from new (N) and aged (A) plastic pearl-farming gear (spat collector and synthetic rope) obtained after 24 h and 120 h incubation, on the embryo-larval development of the pearl oyster using an in-vitro assay. Embryos were exposed for 24 h and 48 h to a negative control (0) and the leachate from 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 g of plastic. L-1. After 24 h exposure to leachate at 100 g.L-1, effects were observed on embryo development (-38% to -60% of formed larvae) and mortality (+72% to +82%). Chemical analyses of plastic gear indicated the presence of 26 compounds, consisting of organic contaminants (PAHs) and additives (mainly phthalates). Screening of leachates demonstrated that these compounds leach into the surrounding seawater with an additional detection of pesticides. Higher levels of phthalates were measured in leachates obtained from new (6.7-9.1 mg.L-1) than from aged (0.4-0.5 mg.L-1) plastics, which could be part of the explanation of the clear difference in toxicity observed after 48 h exposure at lower concentrations (0.1-10 g.L-1), associated with mortality ranging from 26 to 86% and 17-28%, respectively. Overall, this study suggests that plastic gear used in the pearl-farming industry releases significant amounts of hazardous chemicals over their lifetime, which may affect pearl oyster development that call for in-situ exploration. Photoredox and Ni catalysis are combined to produce diaryl ethers under mild conditions. A broad range of aryl halides and phenol derivatives are cross-coupled in the presence of a readily available organic photocatalyst and NiBr2 (dtbpy). Symmetrical diaryl ethers have also been directly obtained from aryl bromides in the presence of water. Mechanistic investigations support the involvement of Ni(0) species at the outset of the reaction and a Ni(II)/Ni(III)-photocatalyzed single electron transfer process preceding the productive C(sp(2))-OAr reductive elimination.

Samples of gas and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were collected in Dalian, China, a typical coastal city, to determine the concentrations, seasonal variations, influential factors, sources, and gas-PM2.5 partitioning of polybrominated Biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and dechlorane plus (DPs) in the ambient air. Annual average concentrations of Sigma 7PBDEs, BDE209, Sigma(6)NBFRs, and DPs were 4.40 +/- 2.93, 1460 +/- 2500, 7.81 +/- 6.85, and 0.15 +/- 0.14 pg/m(3) for the gas phase, and 2.68 +/- 1.64, 4291 +/- 4306, 13.6 +/- 23.4, and 0.31 +/- 0.22 pg/m(3) for the fine particle phase, respectively. BDE209 was the dominant congener, followed by HBB and BEH-TEBP, and seasonal variations in air concentrations were apparent for BFRs, especially those in the gas phase. Moreover, meteorological parameters and criteria air pollutants revealed significant positive correlations between temperature and less-brominated BFRs in the gas phase, and between PM2.5 and highly-brominated BFRs in the particle phase. This suggests that the presence of these compounds in ambient air may largely result from combustion-related processes. Furthermore, an analysis of the gas-PM2.5 partitioning of BFRs and DPs suggested that BFRs and DPs mostly attained equilibrium, except for some NBFRs. Due to the ban of commercial penta-, octa-, and deca-BDEs by the Stockholm Convention, emissions from historical use and combustion are becoming the important sources of PBDEs in China.
