Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.

The methoxyl group is the most abundant functional group of lignin and affects the properties, reactivity, and application of lignin. Efficient demethylation is always of interest in the area of lignin chemistry and application. This study demonstrated a new method for cleaving ether compounds and demethylating lignin in acidic concentrated lithium bromide (ACLB) solution under mild conditions. It was found that the ACLB system could universally cleave ether compounds except for diaryl ethers. The study on lignin model compounds (creosol, syringol, and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene) verified that ACLB could demethylate them to corresponding phenols. Four real lignin samples produced from various sources by different methods were also efficiently demethylated by 69-82% in ACLB. The lignin demethylation resulted in more phenolic hydroxyl groups, which benefits some downstream applications of lignin. This study also provided new insights into the cleavage of the ether bonds in lignin. In addition to the methyl-aryl ether bond, ACLB could cleave other ether bonds of lignin in beta-O-4, beta-5, and beta-beta structures except for the 4-O-5 bond in the diphenyl structure. The ether bonds were cleaved via the S(N)2 substitution except for the beta-O-4 bond, which was primarily cleaved via the benzyl cation and enol ether intermediates, leading to Hibbert’s ketones. Some of the beta-O-4 structures were transformed into benzodioxane (BD) structures, which were stable in the ACLB system.

The design of novel materials to use simultaneously in an ocular system for driven therapeutics and wound healing is still challenging. Here, we produced nanocomposites of tungsten disulfide carriers with spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) as core inside a cubic iron oxide NPs shell (WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that 10 nm s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 NPs were attached on the WS2 sheet surfaces. The cytotoxicity of the WS2 sheets and nanocomposites were evaluated on bovine cornea endothelial cells (BCECs) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for a duration of three days. The MTT assay results showed low toxicity of the WS2 sheets on BCECs by 67% cell viability at 100 mu g/mL in 24 h, while the nanocomposites show 50% cell viability in the same conditions. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of nanocomposites revealed the excellent T-2-weighted imaging with an r(2) contrast of 108 mM(-1) S-1. The in vitro photothermal therapy based on WS2 sheets and WS2/s-CoFe2O4 @c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites using 808 nm laser showed that the maximum thermal energy dispatched in medium at different applied power densities (1200 mw, 1800, 2200, 2600 mW) was for 0.1 mg/mL of the sample solution. The migration assay of BCECs showed that the wound healing was approximately 20% slower for the cell exposed by nanocomposites compared with the control (no exposed BCECs). We believe that WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites have a synergic effect as photothermal therapy agents for eye diseases and could be a target in an ocular system using MRI.

Graphene has extensive application in various prospects due to its good stability, high conductivity, and large specific surface area. However, the dispersion of graphene in solvents can significantly affect the preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods. In this work, a density functional theory calculation is carried out to study the interaction between graphene and various solvent molecules. According to the calculation, there is a correlation between the interaction energy (E-a) and the dispersion concentration of graphene in different solvents. In addition, we use methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents to prepare graphene-supported palladium nanoparticles. The size of the nanoparticles decreased with stronger interaction between graphene and solvent molecules when using methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents. Furthermore, there is a good correlation with the size of the nanoparticles and interaction energies between graphene and solvent molecules, which confirmed that E-a is an effective descriptor for graphene dispersion in solvents. This work provides insightful information to understand the dispersion mechanism of graphene in solvents and preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods.

A theoretical and experimental study is performed for liquid-solid phase equilibria in the two-component diphenyl oxide-n-hexadecane system. The results show that this system is eutectic. Two means are chosen for the theoretical study of the system: the Schroder-Le Chatelier equations and the original UNIFAC system. Experimental studies are made via differential thermal analysis on a DSC unit. Results from the theoretical and experimental studies are presented in the formT-xdiagrams of the system. The theoretical and experimental data are compared to one another. Each way of calculating is assessed, and recommendations are made for their application. The eutectic coordinates (melting point and composition) are determined experimentally. The following values are determined experimentally for a eutectic melt: the enthalpy of melting; density at 25 degrees C; kinematic viscosity in the temperature range of 25 to 50 degrees C; flash point in an open cup; boiling point, and refractive index in the temperature range of 25 to 40 degrees C. The composition of the eutectic melt can be used in industry as a heat transfer fluid.

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment, but little information is available about the bioaccumulation of HFRs in mangrove plants. In this study, three mangrove plant species were collected from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China to investigate the bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and several alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs), including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), tetrabromop-xylene (pTBX), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and dechlorane plus (DP). The mean concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, pTBX, PBT, PBEB, HBB and DP in mangrove plant species were 2010,1870, 36.2,18.7, 40.1,17.8, 9.68 and 120 pg g(-1) dry weight, respectively. PBDEs were the dominant HFRs in mangrove plant tissues, followed by DBDPE. The relative abundance of BDE 209 in three mangrove plant tissues were much lower than those in sediments. Significant negative relationships between log root bioaccumulation factors and log K-ow and between log TFr-s (from root to stem) and log K-ow were observed, indicating that HFRs with low hydrophobicity were easily absorbed by mangrove roots and stems. A positive correlation between log TFs-1 (from stem to leaf) and log K-ow were found, suggesting that air-leaf exchange may occur in mangrove plants. This study highlights the uptake of HFRs by mangrove plants, which can be used as remediation for HFRs contamination in the environment. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE, with the formula of CH3O-(CH2O)(n)-CH3), as a promising environmentally benign diesel fuel or additive with an enormous potential in the reduction of soot and NIC, emissions, can be efficiently synthesized from methanol derivatives such as dimethoxymethane (DMM) and trioxymethylene (TOM), which requests a proper catalyst of high performance. In this work, the catalytic performance of graphene oxide (GO) in the synthesis of PODEn as well as its relation to the catalyst structure was thoroughly investigated. The results indicate that GO is an excellent catalyst in the synthesis of PODEn from DMM and TOM; a TOM conversion of 94.6% and selectivity of 86.0% to PODE2-8 are achieved under mild reaction conditions, which is superior to the majority of the state-of-the-art catalysts. Meanwhile, the active species and characteristic layer structure of GO sheets catalytically responsible for PODEn formation were discriminated through selectively removing certain surface functional groups, thermally annealing at different temperatures, and carefully comparing with a series of model compounds. The results illustrate that the superior catalytic performance of GO in the PODEn synthesis should be ascribed to a synergy between the surface sulfonyl, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups present on the GO surface and the unique layered structure of GO sheets, wherein the surface sulfonyl groups act as the main active sites. The insights shown in this work are beneficial to a deep understanding on the catalytic principle of GO and development of efficient catalyst for the synthesis of PODEn.

Species of herbaceous flowering perennial plant of the family Campanulaceae such as Platycodon grandiflorum (P. grandiflorum) and Codonopsis lanceolata (C. lanceolata) widely used in traditional medicine to treat different diseases. In spite of different medicinal results after consumption of the plants, it is hard to distinguish between two of them, because of their similar morphological characteristics. In this study, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) – based metabolite profiling approach was performed and examined to discriminate tuberous roots of P. grandiflorum and C. lanceolate for medicinal purposes. Two basic approaches for sample preparation, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent extraction were adopted. Multivariate statistical techniques, such as orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) plots showed significant differences between P. grandiflorum and C. lanceolata for polar primary and volatile organic metabolites. A number of potential candidates were suggested as the chemomarkers for discrimination of two plants.

As a fundamental type of carbonylation reaction, the alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons constitutes one of the most important industrial applications of homogeneous catalysis. However, owing to the difficulties in controlling multi-selectivities for asymmetric hydrocarbonylation of alkenes, this reaction is typically limited to vinylarenes and analogues. In this work, a highly efficient asymmetric alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of beta-carbonyl functionalized alkenes was developed, providing practical and easy access to various densely functionalized chiral molecules with high optical purity from broadly available alkenes, CO, and nucleophiles (>90 examples, 84-99 % ee). This protocol features mild reaction conditions and a broad substrate scope, and the products can be readily transformed into a diverse array of chiral heterocycles. Control experiments revealed the key role of the beta-carbonyl group in determining the enantioselectivity and promoting the activity, which facilitates chiral induction by coordination to the transition metal as rationalized by DFT calculations. The strategy of utilizing an innate functional group as the directing group on the alkene substrate might find further applications in catalytic asymmetric hydrocarbonylation reactions.

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) activation has found to ameliorate diabetes in animal models. However, no CAR agonists are available clinically. Therefore, a safe and effective CAR activator would be an alternative option. In this study, sixty courmarin derivatives either synthesized or purified from Artemisia capillaris were screened for CAR activation activity. Chemical modifications were on position 5,6,7,8 with mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-substitutions. Among all the compounds subjected for in vitro CAR activation screening, 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin was the most effective and was selected for further preclinical studies. Chemical modification on the 6 position and unsaturated chains were generally beneficial. Electron-withdrawn groups as well as long unsaturated chains were hazardous to the activity. Mechanism of action studies showed that CAR activation of 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin might be through the inhibition of EGFR signaling and upregulating PP2Ac methylation. To sum up, modification mimicking natural occurring coumarins shed light on CAR studies and the established screening system provides a rapid method for the discovery and development of CAR activators. In addition, one CAR activator, scoparone, did showed anti-diabetes effect in db/db mice without elevation of insulin levels.
