A copper-catalysed hydroxylation of diaryliodoniums to generate phenols and diaryl ethers is reported. This method allows the synthesis of diversely functionalized phenols under mild reaction conditions without the need for a strong inorganic base or an expensive noble-metal catalyst. Significantly, convenient application of diaryliodoniums is demonstrated in the preparation of diaryl ethers in a one-pot operation.

MoO3 catalyst was prepared by calcination using (NH4)(6)Mo7O24 center dot 4H(2)O as precursor and was characterized by XRD, XPS, H-2-TPR and low temperature N-2 adsorption. Hydrodeoxygenation of phenol was conducted to investigate the catalytic performance of MoO3 catalyst at lower H-2 pressure. Effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and N-2 partial pressure on the phenol conversion and product distribution were tested carefully. MoO3 catalyst was found to preferentially produce arenes with high selectivity, while at lengthened reaction time cyclohexane selectivity was increased gradually. Oxygen vacancy site of MoO3 (Mo5+) was deemed to be the active center in the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol, which accounts for the cleavage of C-AR-OH to benzene. In addition, MoO3 catalyzed HDO reactions were further tested using different phenolic compounds as reactants. Experimental results suggest MoO3 catalyst can be widely applied in the conversion of diverse lignin-derived phenolic compounds conversion to aromatic hydrocarbons.

Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

This work reports a new approach of synthesis of FePt nanoparticles in aqueous medium using cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as a capping agent and the influence of change of its concentration on the size of the particles. Tuning of magnetic properties has also been done by changing the CTAB concentrations. Here at higher CTAB concentration, particles formed are of smaller size compared to the size prepared in lower micellar concentration. The ordering parameter of the particles after annealing at 550 degrees C with the variation of particle size is also studied. The magnetic properties of these particles are studied and the effect of particle phase and size on magnetic property is also investigated. The particles are prepared in aqueous medium because water soluble particles are useful for hyperthermia therapy. Heating abilities of the particles under AC magnetic field are also checked with change in their size. The studies on interaction of particles with cancer cell line was also performed with probing the cell by fluorescence imaging technique after bio-functionalization of the particles by sodium oleate and fluorescent dye rhodamine-B-isothiocyanate (RITC). All these preliminary studies indicate a promising applicability of the particles for localized cancer treatment by magnetic field induced hyperthermia therapy.

A four-parameter, Ghoderao-Dalvi-Narayan 2 cubic equation of state (GDN2 CEOS), is presented which incorporates the following: 1. The experimental value of the critical compressibility factor has been used as a fixed input parameter for calculations; 2. All the parameters (a, b, c, d) of CEOS are temperature dependent functions in the subcritical region and arc temperature independent functions in the supercritical region and; 3. A new a function is introduced with two compound specific parameters which are estimated by matching saturated vapor pressure at two fixed temperature points T-r = 0.5, 0.7. Our formalism enables us to cast three of the four parameters of the CEOS as a function of the remaining parameter. The proposed CEOS is used to predict properties of 334 pure compounds, including saturated vapor pressure and liquid density, compressed liquid density, heat capacities at the constant pressure and volume, enthalpy of vaporization, sound velocity. To calculate thermodynamic properties of a pure compound, the present CEOS require the critical temperature, the critical pressure, the Pitzer’s acentric factor, the critical compressibility factor, and two parameters of the alpha function. The saturated liquid density predictions for pure fluids are very accurate when compared with GDN1 (Ghoderao-Dalvi-Narayan 1), MPR (Modified Peng-Robinson), and PT (Patel-Teja) equations of state. Unlike MPR EOS, the proposed temperature dependent covolume parameter b in the present work satisfies all the constraints mentioned in the literature to avoid thermodynamic inconsistencies at the extreme temperature and pressure. Using van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule, the present CEOS is further used to predict bubble pressure and the vapor mole fraction of binary mixtures. A multitude of metrics exist to assign scores to synthetic routes within computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools. A quantitative scoring method is necessary to identify the most promising synthetic approaches to a molecule. However, current CASP tools are limited in their capacity to evaluate reaction selectivity and are unable to fully account for the effect of side products on the purification sequences associated with chemical syntheses. We develop a novel quantitative metric called ExtractionScore for evaluating synthetic routes based on the predicted identities of side products as well as the separability of major and side products by liquid-liquid extraction based on chemical property prediction. By comparing industrially practiced routes to a collection of 200 pharmaceutically relevant compounds with routes suggested by state-of-the-art CASP software, we show that ExtractionScore may improve retrosynthetic recommendations by incorporating information about the formation of side products.

We aim at encapsulating fragrances made of a variety of lipophilic species to slow down their diffusion. Our strategy is to develop capsules by polymerizing the water intermediate phase of an oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion. In other terms, our system consists in a direct emulsion of fragrance (O1) in a water phase (W) containing monomer, initiator, and cross-linker. To obtain the double emulsion, this direct emulsion, stabilized by a hydrophilic surfactant, is itself dispersed in an external lipophilic solvent used in perfumery (O2) and stabilized by a lipophilic surfactant. Polymerization of the intermediate water phase aims at obtaining a 3D network. Differently from nowadays-proposed capsules, this strategy allows polymerization only taking place in the water phase rather in the phase containing the fragrance. Moreover, the obtained 3D network is supposed to play the role of an effective barrier limiting the diffusion of the inner lipophilic species towards either the external solvent or air. Such an approach implies the combination of a formulation step to elaborate the double emulsion using two antagonistic surfactants, a hydrophilic one and a lipophilic one, and of the polymerization of the intermediate phase. Insertion of the polymerizable species in the double emulsion shall not destabilize it. Some monomers exhibiting interfacial affinity and interfering with the formulation of the double emulsion have to be avoided. By varying the nature of the monomers and the cross-linker to monomer ratio, capsules with high encapsulation efficiencies and with various mechanical properties have been obtained.

Background: Neurotoxic effects of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) at low levels have not been well studied in human population, and whether the associations can be explained by thyroid hormones (THs) remains unclear. Objectives: We examined the associations of prenatal PBDE exposures with THs in cord plasma and neurobehavior of children at 2 and 4 years among general population in China. Methods: Participants were mother-child pairs in the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study. Nine PBDE congeners and THs (thyroid stimulating hormone, total thyroxine, free thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, and free triiodothyronine) were determined in cord plasma. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1.5-5) were completed by caregivers to assess children’s neurobehavioral development at 2 and 4 years. In the final analyses, 199 and 307 mother-child pairs at 2 and 4 years were included to examine associations of PBDEs with CBCL scores using Pearson-scale-adjusted Poisson regressions, and 339 subjects were included in linear regression models to investigate the associations between PBDEs and THs. Results: BDE-47 had the highest detection rate of 83.82% with the median concentration of 0.19 ng/g lipid, followed by BDE-28, -99, -100 and -153 with detection rates nearly 50%. We found positive associations between prenatal PBDE concentrations and children’s neurobehavior, including Somatic Complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep Problems and Internalizing Problems in girls, and Somatic Complaints and Attention Problems in boys. We also observed inverse associations of the sum of BDE-47, – 28, – 99, -100 and -153 with THs. However, by adding THs to the models examining associations between PBDEs and CBCL, the main results didn’t measurably change. Conclusions: This study adds new knowledge that prenatal PBDEs at low levels may be related to long-lasting behavioral abnormalities in children and reduced THs in cord plasma. However, the hypothesis that the neurotoxic impact of PBDEs may be explained by alterations in cord THs was not supported.

An article Identification and Migration Studies of Photolytic Decomposition Products of UV-Photoinitiators in Food Packaging WOS:000496242300177 published article about SAFETY in [Scarsella, Joseph B.; Zhang, Nan; Hartman, Thomas G.] Rutgers State Univ, Dept Food Sci, 65 Dudley Rd, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 USA in 2019, Cited 19. UV-curable inks, coatings, and adhesives are being increasingly used in food packaging systems. When exposed to UV energy, UV-photoinitiators (PI’s) present in the formulations produce free radicals which catalyze polymerization of monomers and pre-polymers into resins. In addition to photopolymerization, other free radical reactions occur in these systems resulting in the formation of chemically varied photolytic decomposition products, many of which are low molecular weight chemical species with high migration potential. This research conducted model experiments in which 24 commonly used PI’s were exposed to UV-energy at the typical upper limit of commercial UV-printing press conditions. UV-irradiated PI’s were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electrospray-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in order to identify photolytic decomposition products. Subsequently, migration studies of 258 UV-cure food packaging samples were conducted using GC-MS; PI’s and photolytic decomposition products were found in nearly all samples analyzed. One hundred-thirteen photolytic decomposition products were identified. Eighteen intact PI’s and 21 photolytic decomposition products were observed as migrants from the 258 samples analyzed, and these were evaluated for frequency of occurrence and migratory concentration range. The most commonly observed PI’s were 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone and benzophenone. The most commonly observed photolytic decomposition products were 2,4,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde and 1-phenyl-2-butanone. This compilation of PI photolytic decomposition data and associated migration data will aid industry in identifying and tracing non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in food packaging materials.
