Intermetallic compounds of Al and Ru are exhibiting promising physical and chemical properties, such high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Compacted micron-sized Ru and Al powders or multilayer systems are usually the starting points for their synthesis. Nanoparticles are rarely applied in the preparation of such intermetallic compounds. Here we present the preparation of Ru aluminides starting from Al and Ru nanoparticles. Al particles showing diameters as small as 125 nm were synthesized via thermal decomposition of triisobutylaluminum in refluxing phenylether, while the Ru nanoparticles were prepared by thermal decomposition of Ru-3(CO)(12) at 300 degrees C in the presence of oleylamine. Both synthetic steps can be carried out subsequently in a one pot reaction and the resulting powders consisted of well-dispersed and intermixed Ru and Al particles. Upon thermal treatment of the mixed particles in an Ar atmosphere we observed the formation of multiphase products mainly consisting of Ru, RuAl, Ru2Al3 and RuAl2. The phase fractions were found to be dependent on the sample mass used for the reaction and the Al:Ru ratio. Ignition temperatures of the self-propagating reaction could be decreased to 300 degrees C in an ambient atmosphere. Accordingly, the preparation of Ru-Al intermetallic compounds starting from wet chemically synthesized Al and Ru nanoparticles was found to be readily possible, particularly under an atmosphere of ambient air.

Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that Sigma AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f(anti) values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

Naphthalene diimide (NDI)-biselenophene copolymer (PNDIBS), NDI-selenophene copolymer (PNDIS), and the fluorinated donor polymer PM6 were used to investigate how a fluorinated polymer component affects the morphology and performance of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Although the PM6:PNDIBS blend system exhibits a high open-circuit voltage (V-oc = 0.925 V) and a desired low optical bandgap energy loss (E-loss = 0.475 eV), the overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) was 3.1%. In contrast, PM6:PNDIS blends combine a high V-oc (0.967 V) with a high fill factor (FF = 0.70) to produce efficient all-PSCs with 9.1% PCE. Furthermore, the high-performance PM6:PNDIS all-PSCs could be fabricated by various solution processing approaches and at active layer thickness as high as 300 nm without compromising photovoltaic efficiency. The divergent photovoltaic properties of PNDIS and PNDIBS when paired respectively with PM6 are shown to originate from the starkly different blend morphologies and blend photophysics. Efficient PM6:PNDIS blend films were found to exhibit a vertical phase stratification along with lateral phase separation, while the molecular packing had a predominant face-on orientation. Bulk lateral phase separation with both face-on and edge-on molecular orientations featured in the poor-performing PM6:PNDIBS blend films. Enhanced charge photogeneration and suppressed geminate and bimolecular recombinations with 99% charge collection probability found in PM6:PNDIS blends strongly differ from the poor charge collection probability (66%) and high electron-hole pair recombination seen in PM6:PNDIBS. Our findings demonstrate that beyond the generally expected enhancement of V-oc, a fluorinated polymer component in all-PSCs can also exert a positive or negative influence on photovoltaic performance via the blend morphology and blend photophysics.

In the present study, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and compound-specific isotope analysis were used to investigate the in situ biodegradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment cores collected from a pond at an e-waste recycling site in South China. The potential microorganisms relevant to the degradation of PBDEs were also assessed to aid in the understanding of in situ biodegradation. The PMF results suggested that reductive debromination took place in the sediments. The debromination signal (ratio of the concentration of factor S (PMF result) to the total PBDE content) was positively correlated with the relative abundance of Dehalococcoidetes at different core depths. The clear C-13 enrichment of five PBDE congeners (BDE 28, 47, 49, 99, and 153) with increasing core depth indicated that a measurable change in isotope fractionation might have occurred during PBDE biodegradation. The in situ biodegradation was further validated by the widespread detection of mono-BDE congeners (BDE 2, BDE 3) and diphenyl ether in the sediments. This study provides new evidence to enhance our understanding of the in situ biodegradation of PBDEs and suggests that the extensive removal of bromine from PBDEs was mediated by indigenous microorganisms at the e-waste site.

Despite the introduction of restrictive regulations in the USA and the European Union, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are still found in various types of environmental and biological samples at significant concentration levels. The presence of these persistent organic pollutants in the environment raises important issues because of their negative impact on immunological and neurological systems, and on the hormonal balances in living organisms. From the analytical point of view, the final determination of PBDEs would entail substantial challenges, because it would necessitate conducting the pre-concentration of analytes, or sample clean up. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the analytical application potential of developed dummy molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the selective recognition of low-mass PBDEs. The 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl ether was employed as a dummy template of low-mass PBDEs. The developed types of the sorption materials were used in the sample preparation stage of the analytical procedure to determine the PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 levels in selected representatives of environmental samples reference materials of soil and bottom sediments. The recovery values of PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 from the studied solid samples ranged from 60% to 87%, depending on the applied DMIPs type.

This study was designed to assess the effect of lactational polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) exposure on early physical development of both healthy and fetal growth restriction (FGR) infants. Z scores of head circumference-for-age (ZHC), length-for-age (ZLEN), weight-for-age (ZWEI) and weight-for-length (ZWFL) were calculated according to the WHO Child Growth Standards. FGR infants had a higher PBDE exposure level and faster growth speed from 42 days to 6 months compared with healthy infants. Exposure of lower brominated BDEs (BDE28 similar to 154) and the sum of 18 BDE congeners (BDE28 similar to 209) negatively associated with ZHC [mean difference estimate (95 % CI): -0.71 (-1.22, -0.22) and -0.81 (-1.31, -0.33)] in FGR boys. Both BDE153 and BDE196 exposure had a significant correlation with ZLEN of boys in FGR group [mean difference estimate (95 % CI): -0.28 (-0.48, -0.07) and -0.52 (-0.91, -0.14)]. Each 10 ng/g lipid increase in the concentrations of BDE154 were respectively associated with 0.16 increase in ZWEI among boys in healthy group. No significant association was found in girls. Lactational PBDE exposure had effects on the early growth of both FGR and healthy infants. The encouragement of breastfeeding should therefore be considered in conjunction with PBDE contamination levels.

In the present study, we report the synthesis of a series of copper(II) complexes with a wide range of ligands and their testing in the copper catalyzed Chan-Evans-Lam (CEL) coupling of aniline and phenylboronic acid. The efficiency of the coupling was directly connected with the ease of the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) of the complexes. The most efficient catalyst was derived from 4-t-butyl-2,5-bis[(quinolinylimino)methyl]phenolate and two Cu(II) ions. Depending on the counter-anion nature and the concentration of the reaction mixture, the reaction can be directed to predominant C-N-bond formation. Forty-three derivatives of diphenylamine were prepared under the optimized conditions. The proposed mechanism of the catalysis was based on the reduction potential of a series of complexes, molecular weight measurements of the catalytic complex in MeOH and the kinetic studies of aniline and phenylboronic acid coupling. In addition, an H-1 NMR experiment in a sealed NMR tube, without external oxygen supply available, proved that no complete Cu(II) to Cu(I) conversion was observed under the condition, ruling out the usually accepted mechanism of the C-N coupling, which included the oxygenation of the intermediately formed Cu(I) complexes after the key step of C-N conversion had already been completed. Instead, a mechanism was proposed, involving an oxygen molecule coordinated to two copper ions in the key C-N bond formation without any detectable conversion of the Cu(II) complexes to Cu(I).

In this work, the effects of metals and process parameters were discussed via the catalytic hydrogenolysis of beta-O-4 lignin model compound, 2-phenethyl phenyl ether. The best results were obtained over Rh/Nb2O5 with an overall conversion of 99.3% and exceptional selectivity of 98.9% to aromatic products when the hydrogenolysis was carried out at 260 degrees C and 0.1 MPa H-2 for 4 h. The high efficiency is mainly attributed to the cooperation between Rh and NbOx at the perimeter sites, in which Rh particles are responsible for the dissociation of H-2 and NbOx for activating CeO bonds. With respect to depolymerize of ash wood lignin, the liquid products were mostly aromatics over Rh/Nb2O5 under 0.1 MPa H-2. The results achieved in this work provide a promising prospect towards valorization of lignin into production of valuable aromatic compounds under low hydrogen pressure.

The distribution and toxic equivalents (TEQs) of brominated and chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs) in soils from Agbogbloshie e-waste site (Ghana) were investigated. The composition of brominated/chlorinated dibenzofurans (PXDFs) and diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, PCDEs, and PXDEs) was examined using two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry to elucidate possible formation pathways of dioxins from e-waste recycling. The highest concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs were found, respectively, in the open burning (1.3-380 ng/g dry weight) and dismantling areas (11-1000 ng/g dry weight) and were comparable to the highest reported for informal e-waste sites. PXDFs and PXDEs were detected at up to the range of hundreds of nanograms per gram. The homologue profiles suggest that PXDFs were formed mainly from PBDFs through successive Br-to-Cl exchange. However, monobromo-PCDFs were also derived from de-novo-generated PCDFs in open burning areas. PBDFs contributed similar or higher TEQs (7.9-5400 pg/g dry weight) compared with PCDD/Fs (6.8-5200 pg/g dry weight), whereas PXDFs were also substantial TEQ contributors in open burning areas. The high TEQs of PBDFs in the dismantling area (120-5200 pg/g dry weight) indicate the need to consider brominated dioxins besides chlorinated dioxins in future studies on health implications for e-waste workers and local residents.
