The use of copper for reducing nosocomial infections or healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) has been carried out in intensive care units (ICU) by replacing some objects generally made of stainless steel or other materials with solid pieces of copper. The authors’ proposal for a sustainable use of copper consists of introducing it in a lamina + adhesive format. This proposal has been tested in an ICU at the Ceuta Hospital in Spain. It has been found to provide an equally efficient solution as antibacterial material than the usual solid format, but with only a layer of 50 microns of copper, which is a high-cost and limited resource. After that intervention, some improvements are also proposed: a standardization of the pieces chosen to cover with a lamina of copper for saving material; and another method of replacement aiming to lower the time that the ICU cannot be used. To ensure that the proposed bonding method is harmless to human health and the adhesive does not interfere with the indoor environment by releasing toxic chemicals, the lamina + adhesive sheet has been further tested. The results and proposals are briefly shown.

Semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKs) represent an industrially important class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics with excellent physicochemical and mechanical properties, and the synthesis of PAEKs with enhanced glass transition temperatures (T-g) and moderate melting temperatures (T-m) is highly desirable. In the work reported, novel poly(ether ketone ketone)s (PEKKs) containing 1,4-naphthylene units in main chains were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts solution copolycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride with a mixture of diphenyl ether and 1,4-di(4-phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene (1,4-DPOBN). The polymerization proceeded smoothly in 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and N-methylpyrrolidone under mild conditions and afforded polymers having inherent viscosities of 0.66-0.98 dL g(-1). The polymers with 5-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN are semicrystalline and have obviously enhanced T-g over commercial poly(ether ether ketone)s and PEKKs due to the incorporation of rigid and bulky 1,4-naphthylene moieties into the main chain. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN not only have high T-g of 175-177 degrees C, but also relatively low T-m of 331-336 degrees C, having high potential for melt processing. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN also exhibit excellent thermal stability and good mechanical and solvent-resistance properties. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

High temperature thermoplastics are gaining popularity due to their superior toughness and durability. For a new member in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family, polyetherketoneketone (PERK) has shown the highest melting temperature, up to 380 degrees C. Meanwhile, it requires a high temperature to improve the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between PEKK and a fiber, toward advanced thermoplastic composites. Owing to the strong Joule heating in carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, a more efficient strategy is designed to enhance the IFSS. Under the electro treatment, the surrounding PEKK starts the melting at the fiber surface, and even impregnates into the CNT assemblies. As a result, the interfacial interaction can be remarkably enhanced. The highest IFSS is up to 80.4 MPa for the electro-treated interface between a CNT fiber and PEKK, higher than the thermal-treated IFSS (52.5 MPa) and that between an aramid fiber and PEKK (59.8 MPa).

To investigate overall pollution and potential risk of 32 targets (11 PBDEs, 8 NBFRs, and 13 OPFRs) in indoor and outdoor environments, dust and PM10 samples were sampled from non-occupational and occupational zones in Chengdu, China. Sigma Cl-OPFRs, BDE-209, and DBDPE were the dominant constitutes in both the non occupational and occupational dust. Regarding the PM10, no significant differences were found between the kitchen and the living room for studied OPFRs except TDCIPP, and TCEP, TCPP, TEHP, and TCP displayed significant correlation among the kitchen, the living room and personal samples. Profiles of the OPFRs in the PM10 from occupational areas presented great variation and ranked as: Sigma Aryl-OPFRs < Sigma Alkyl-OPFRs < Sigma Cl-OPFRs. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the investigated FRs via dust suggested dust ingestion and inhalation were the main exposure route to FRs, and the total of EDIs were at least one order of magnitude lower than reference data, indicating a low risk for the general public in Chengdu. However, with increasing usage of FRs in daily goods, a long-term monitoring should be conducted. The Arctic is subject to long-range atmospheric deposition of globally-distilled semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) that bioaccumulate and biomagnify in lipid-rich food webs. In addition, locally contaminated sites may also contribute SVOCs to the arctic environment. Specifically, Alaska has hundreds of formerly used defense (FUD) sites, many of which are co-located with Alaska Native villages in remote parts of the state. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of SVOC contamination on Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island through the analysis of sentinel fish, the ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius), collected from Troutman Lake located within the watershed of an FUD site and adjacent to the Yupik community of Gambell. We measured the concentrations of legacy and emerging SVOCs in 303 fish samples (81 composites), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs) and their diester metabolites, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PBDEs and PCBs were the most abundant SVOC groups found in stickleback with Sigma PBDE and Sigma PCB median concentrations of 25.8 and 10.9 ng/g ww, respectively, followed by PFAS (median Sigma PFAS 7.22 ng/g ww). Sigma OPE and Sigma OPE metabolite concentrations were lower with median concentrations of 4.97 and 1.18 ng/g ww, respectively. Chemical patterns and distributions based on correlations and comparison with SVOC concentrations in stickleback from other parts of the island suggest strong local sources of PCBs, PBDEs, and PFAS on St. Lawrence Island. Selective catalytic hydrotreatment of lignin-derived phenols and dimeric ethers into alkanes is crucial for utilization of lignin and its fragments. Herein, we developed an efficient catalytic system with well-dispersed metal nanoparticles supported on SBA-15 synergistic with an ionic liquid. The catalytic system could catalyze the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of various monomeric and dimeric lignin-derived phenols into the corresponding alkanes under acid free conditions. The synergistic [Bmim]PF6-Ru/SBA-15 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) catalysis exhibited the best HDO activity for ligninderived phenols and dimeric ethers with >99.0% conversion and maximum > 98.0% selectivity of the corresponding alkanes. The yield of cyclohexane from diphenyl ether was 97.7% with 100% conversion under 2 MPa H-2 at 130 degrees C for 6 h. The mechanism investigation confirmed that the Ru/SBA-15 catalyst and the anion of [Bmim] PF6 played crucial roles in the hydrogenation process and deoxidization process, respectively. The catalytic system was reused six times for HDO of diphenyl ether to test its stability.

Nanoparticles layered with palladium(0) were prepared from nano-sized magnetic Fe3O4 by coating it with silica and then reacting sequentially with phenylselenyl chloride under an N-2 atmosphere and palladium(ii) chloride in water. The resulting Fe3O4@SiO2@SePh@Pd(0) NPs are magnetically retrievable and the first example of NPs in which the outermost layer of Pd(0) is mainly held by selenium. The weight percentage of Pd in the NPs was found to be 1.96 by ICP-AES. The NPs were authenticated via TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, and powder XRD and found to be efficient as catalysts for the C-O and C-C (Suzuki-Miyaura) coupling reactions of ArBr/Cl in water. The oxidation state of Pd in the NPs having size distribution from similar to 12 to 18 nm was inferred as zero by XPS. They can be recycled more than seven times. The main features of the proposed protocols are their mild reaction conditions, simplicity, and efficiency as the catalyst can be separated easily from the reaction mixture by an external magnet and reused for a new reaction cycle. The optimum loading (in mol% of Pd) was found to be 0.1-1.0 and 0.01-1.0 for O-arylation and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, respectively. For ArCl, the required amount of NPs was more as compared to that needed for ArBr. The nature of catalysis is largely heterogeneous.

Jasmine is one of the most valuable commercial oil bearing plants from family Oleaceae used for the production of jasmine scent mostly in the form of concrete and absolute. Being an export commodity, development of reliable analytical methods for its jasmine species and derived products authentication and or adulterants detection should now follow. A comparative volatiles profiling of Jasminum grandiflorum L., J. multiflorum (Burm. f.) Andrews and J. sambac (L.) Aiton flowers in addition to J. grandiflorum products viz., concrete and absolute at different time periods was performed using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to GC/MS. A total of 77 volatiles were identified belonging to esters, alcohols, sesquiterpenes, ketones, aldehydes, phenols, hydrocarbons and nitrogenous compounds. The phenylpropanoid/benzenoid and terpenoid classes were the major volatile classes in jasmine. Benzyl acetate was the chief scent volatile whereas major terpenoids included linalool, nerolidol, alpha-farnesene and cis-jasmone. Results revealed aroma variation among different flowers and products obtained from J. grandiflorum at different months. This study provides the first comprehensive and comparative aroma profile for Egyptian Jasminum species along with its products that could be used for its future quality control in industry.
