Purpose: We developed a contrast agent for targeting E-selectin expression. We detected the agent using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vivo in nude mice that had undergone nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) metastasis. Methods: Sialyl Lewis X (sLe(x)) was conjugated with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles. Hydrodynamic size, polydispersity index, and zeta-potential of USPIO- polyethylene glycol (PEG) nanoparticles and USPIO-PEG-sLe x nanoparticles were measured. Component changes in nanoparticles of USPIO, USPIO-PEG, and USPIO-PEG-sLe(x) were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. A model of NPC metastasis to inguinal lymph nodes in nude mice was used to investigate characteristics of the USPIO-PEG-sLe x nanoparticles in vivo. We investigated the ability of the T2* value, change in T2* value (Delta T2* value), and enhancement rate (ER) to assess accumulation of USPIO-PEG-sLe(x) nanoparticles quantitatively in mice of a metastasis group and control group. Four MRI scans were undertaken for each mouse. The first scan (t0) was done before administration of USPIO-PEGsLe x nanoparticles (0.1 mL) via the tail vein. The other scans were carried out at 0 (t1), 1 (t2), and 2 hours (t3) postinjection. The mean optical density was used to reflect E-selectin expression. Results: sLe(x) was labeled onto USPIO successfully. In vivo, there were significant interactions between the groups and time for T2* values after administration of USPIO-PEG-sLe(x) nanoparticles. Six parameters (T2* at t2, Delta T2* at t1, Delta T2* at t2, ER at t1, ER at t2, and ER at t3) were correlated with the mean optical density. Conclusion: USPIO-PEG-sLe(x) nanoparticles can be used to assess E-selectin expression quantitatively. Use of such molecular probes could enable detection of early metastasis of NPC, more accurate staging, and treatment monitoring.

Biofuels produced from lignocellulosic feedstocks are gaining popularity because of the elevating energy demand, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, escalating fuel prices and dwindling fossil fuel resources. Therefore, it has become important to seek alternative energy resources from renewable waste biomass. In this study, agricultural crop residues such as soybean straw and flax straw were gasified in subcritical water (300 degrees C) and supercritical water (400 and 500 degrees C) for H-2 production. To maximize the non-catalytic process, the impacts of temperature (300-500 degrees C), biomass-to-water ratio, BTW (1:5 and 1:10), biomass particle size (0.13 mm and 0.8 mm) and residence time (30-60 min) on H-2 production were studied at a pressure range of 22-25 MPa. Maximum H-2 yield and total gas yields of 6.62 mmol/g and 14.91 mmol/g, respectively were obtained from soybean straw at the highest temperature (500 degrees C), lower feed concentration (1:10 BTW), smaller particle size biomass (0.13 mm) and longer residence time (45 min). To evaluate the drift in the experimental H-2 yield from the theoretical values, thermodynamic modeling using Gibbs free minimization method was performed. The experimental results showed slight deviations from the thermodynamic models due to the temperature gradient and absence of agitation in the tubular batch reactor. However, the KOH catalyst was found to elevate the H-2, CO2 and CH4 yields for soybean straw and flax straw. The findings suggest that supercritical water gasification could be an efficient green technology for H-2 production from waste biomass.

Their standard electrode potential and their reactivity towards oxygen makes their synthesis a challenging task. Here we present a thermal decomposition approach starting from triisobutylaluminium (TIBAL) as a precursor. This compound can be decomposed in refluxing diphenylether as a high-boiling solvent and in the presence of metallic nanoparticles of Ni, Ru or Ag acting as seeds. The resulting particles revealed sizes of around 100 nm. Passivation of the Al particles is possible in an optional second step after the synthesis by adding oleic acid resulting in the formation of organically capped Al particles. The suitability of these submicron particles for the synthesis of aluminides was studied by reacting the synthesized particles with Ru powders, resulting in the formation of the respective aluminide.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are extensively used as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in different types of materials, which have been listed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention in 2009 and 2017. Due to their ubiquities in the environment and toxicities, PBDEs have posed great threat to both human health and ecosystems. The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive understanding of the exposure pathways, levels and trends and associated health risks of PBDEs in human body in a global scale. We systematically reviewed and described the scientific data of PBDE researches worldwide from 2010 to March 2020, focusing on the following three areas: (1) sources and human external exposure pathways of PBDEs; (2) PBDE levels and trends in humans; (3) human data of PBDEs toxicity. Dietary intake and dust ingestion are dominant human exposure pathways. PBDEs were widely detected in human samples, especially in human serum and human milk. Data showed that PBDEs are generally declining in human samples worldwide as a result of their phasing out. Due to the common use of PBDEs, their levels in humans from the USA were generally higher than that in other countries. High concentrations of PBDEs have been detected in humans from PBDE production regions and e-waste recycling sites. BDE-47, -153 and -99 were proved to be the primary congeners in humans. Human toxicity data demonstrated that PBDEs have extensively endocrine disruption effects, developmental effects, and carcinogenic effects among different populations.

Lignin may serve as a renewable feedstock for the production of chemicals and fuels if mild, scalable processes for its depolymerization can be devised. The use of small organic thiols represents a bioinspired strategy to cleave the beta-O-4 bond, the most common linkage in lignin. In the present study, synthetic beta-O-4 linked polymers were treated with organic thiols, yielding up to 90 % cleaved monomer products. Lignin extracted from poplar was also treated with organic thiols resulting in molecular weight reductions as high as 65 % (M-n) in oxidized lignin. Thiol-based cleavage of other lignin linkages was also explored in small-molecule model systems to uncover additional potential pathways by which thiols might depolymerize lignin. The success of thiol-mediated cleavage on model dimers, polymers, and biomass-derived lignin illustrates the potential utility of small redox-active molecules to penetrate complex polymer matrices for depolymerization and subsequent valorization of lignin into fuels and chemicals.

The relative abundances of compound classes (e.g. CHO1, CHO2 and CHNO1) in fossil fuels have been widely used in previous researches based on the data from mass spectrometry (MS). However, such observations are susceptible to the ionization bias of MS due to the variation of ionization efficiency, which may affect the downstream quantitative analysis. Many efforts have been devoted to investigating the ionization efficiencies of a variety of model compounds, but not complex and diverse mixtures. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how quantitatively ionization bias affects the MS analysis of complex mixtures. In this study, ionization bias was preliminarily investigated by comparing the elemental compositions obtained from MS-analysis via different ionization methods with the data acquired by a standard elemental analyzer. A coal-derived liquid and mixtures of five model compounds were ionized by atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI), electrospray ionization or direct analysis in real-time, followed by analyzing using a high-resolution Orbitrap MS to obtain elemental compositions. MS-based results via APCI ion source showed the closest elemental compositions to those obtained from the elemental analyzer. For the MS-based analysis, the abundances of S-and O-containing compounds were significantly lower and that of N-containing compounds was clearly higher compared to ultimate analysis. The abundances of compound classes were adjusted to provide a closer approximation of the actual contents, which might better serve for the downstream quantitative analysis. Although absolute quantification still needs additional work, the adjusted MS-based analysis provides not only the molecular level data, but also a better quantification ability compared to previous analytical approaches.

A total of 26 samples of surface sediments collected in the Neva River (including the St. Petersburg city area) and in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland were analyzed for 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and 10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in sediments ranged from <0.05 to 219pgg(-1)d.w. and from 44 to 246,600pgg(-1)d.w. respectively. The total World Health Organization toxic equivalent (WHO-TEQ(PCDD/F + PCB)) values varied between 0.01 and 59.0pgg(-1). In the majority of cases, the PCDD/F and dl-PCB concentrations do not exceed the threshold effect level (TEL) recommended by Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) as quantitative target for the sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. The congener profile indicates that combustion is the primary source of PCDD/Fs in most of the studied samples. For the PCBs, the historical use of technical PCB products was identified as the major source. sigma PBDE10 concentrations ranged from 0.004 to 1.8ngg(-1)d.w. The congener profile results show that BDE-47 (tetra-BDE) is the dominant congener in sediment samples. According to the sediment and water quality guidelines established in the EU (PNEC) and in Canada (FEQG), all the samples studied can be classified as lowly contaminated by PBDEs. Methods: In a cohort of 253 pregnant women and their children from Cincinnati, OH (enrolled 2003-2006), we quantified biomarker concentrations of 43 metals, phthalates, phenols, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, and environmental tobacco smoke in blood or urine. Using k-means clustering and principal component (PC) analysis, we characterized chemical mixtures among pregnant women. We assessed children’s cognitive abilities using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-III and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for ChildrenIV at ages 5 and 8 years, respectively. We estimated covariate-adjusted differences in children’s cognitive ability scores]=cross clusters, and with increasing PC scores and individual biomarker concentrations. Results: Geometric mean biomarker concentrations were generally highest, intermediate, and lowest among women in clusters 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Children born to women in clusters 1 and 2 had 5.1 (95% CI: 9.4,-0.8) and 2.0 (95% CI: 5.5, 1,4) lower performance IQ scores compared to children in cluster 3, respectively. PC scores and individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not associated with cognitive abilities. Conclusions: In this cohort, combined prenatal exposure to phenols, certain phthalates, pesticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances was inversely associated with children’s cognition, but some individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not. Additional studies should determine if the aggregate impact of these chemicals on cognition is different from their individual effects.
