Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

Coastal areas are influenced by anthropogenic input of a variety of organic pollutants, among which polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) represent an important group. In the present study, we investigated the contamination status of PBDEs in surface sediment from two economically important Bays in Southeast China, Sanmen Bay (SMB; n = 29) and Xiamen Bay (XMB; n = 10). Concentrations of n-ary sumation PBDEs ranged from 2.2 to 78.5 ng/g dw (median 5.7 ng/g dw) in SMB and 7.9-276.0 ng/g dw (median 43.5 ng/g dw) in XMB, respectively. A nearshore-offshore decreasing trend was observed for both n-ary sumation PBDEs and BDE-209 concentrations, indicating strong urban influences. Although the current levels would not produce any significant impact on benthos and aquatic ecosystems of the studied regions, continuous monitoring is needed to understand the temporal trends of contamination in the important coastal waters and whether sediment-associated PBDEs constitute a potential source to aquatic ecosystems.

Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain a high level of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), among which polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the most widely used additive BFRs. PBDEs are considered to be a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPS). The efficient removal/degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs is an urgent problem in electronic waste treatment, but the degradation of PBDEs is a great challenge due to their extreme stability and persistence in nature. In this study, a novel management strategy was developed for removal and degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs by using a simple subcritical methanol (SubCM) process. The results showed that reaction temperature, residence time, solid-to-liquid ratio, and additive NaOH are key factors influencing the removal of PBDEs from waste PCBs. Under optimal conditions (200 degrees C, 60 min, 1:20 g/mL), the removal efficiency of Sigma(8) PBDEs from waste PCBs could reach 91.3% and 98.8% for the proposed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. When the temperature is below 200 degrees C, highly brominated PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs were degraded into 2,’3,4′,6-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE71) and 2,4,4′-Tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE28) after SubCM treatment. 4-Bromophenyl ether (BDE4) and diphenyl ether were generated by the further debromination of BDE71 and BDE28 with the increase of treatment temperature. The debromination temperature of PBDEs congeners in SubCM could be markedly lowered by adding 4 g/L of NaOH. The complete debromination of PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs could be achieved at 300 degrees C and 250 degrees C for the developed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased rapidly worldwide in recent years. Exposure to endocrine disruptors can affect thyroid hormones and is probably carcinogenic to humans. The effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As and Hg) on risk of TC have been rarely reported. Hence, we aimed to examine the associations of TC risk with exposure to PBDEs and four heavy metals. This case-control study involved 308 TC cases and 308 age- and sex-matched controls. Plasma PBDEs concentrations were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Concentrations of heavy metals concentrations in urine specimens were detected by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Conditional logistic regression models were used to explore associations of PBDEs and 4 heavy metals exposures with TC risk. A joint-effect interaction term was inserted into the logistic regression models to assess the multiplicative interaction effects of PBDEs-heavy metals on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (BDE-028, -047, -099, -183, -209) were positively correlated with TC risk. As and Hg were also associated with the increased TC risk. Compared with low exposure levels, participants with high exposure levels of As and Hg were 5.35 and 2.98 times more likely to have TC, respectively. Co-exposure to BDE-209 and Pb had a negative interaction effect on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (e.g. BDE-028, -047, -209) and Hg had a significant positive interaction effect on the risk of TC. The joint exposure of BDE-183 and Hg showed a negative interaction effect on TC risk, but the corresponding OR value was still statistically significant. Exposure to PBDEs, As and Hg may be associated with TC development. Joint exposure to PBDEs and Pb or Hg has interaction effects on TC risk. Nanosized self-assemblies built from inorganic nanoparticles and polymer ligands have the potential to generate personalized theranostics systems for diagnostic imaging and cancer therapy. However, most of the theranostics systems suffer from poor targeting activity, insensitive diagnosis and drug leakage, leading to poor treatment results. In this study, a hierarchical tumor acidity-responsive magnetic nanobomb (termed HTAMN) was developed for photodynamic therapy and diagnostic imaging. The HTAMNs were formed through the self-assembly of chlorin e6 (Ce6)-functionalized polypeptide ligand, methoxy poly (ethyleneglycol)-block-poly (dopamineethylenediamine-2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride)-L-glutamate-Ce6 [mPEG-b-P (Dopa-Ethy-DMMA)LG-Ce6] and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). Negatively charged HTAMNs circulate in the blood for prolonged periods and promote tumor retention by passive targeting to the tumor. Once the HTAMNs arrive at the tumor location, the acidic extracellular tumor environment reverses the surface charge of the HTAMNs, resulting in tumor accumulation and cellular uptake. Moreover, in response to the more acidic environment inside cells, the photosensitizers are activated resulted in enhanced diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment. The in vitro and in vivo results indicate the effective tumor accumulation, internalization, diagnostic sensitivity and superior photodynamic therapy effect of the HTAMNs. Therefore, designing smart HTAMNs can promote the rapid development of cancer theranostics for clinical implementation.

Heavy metals and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous pollutants at electronic waste (e-waste) contaminated sites, their individual impacts on soil microbial community has attracted wide attention, however, limited research is available on the combined effects of heavy metals and PBDEs on microbial community of a-waste contaminated. Therefore, combined effects of heavy metals and PBDEs on the microbial community in the e-waste contaminated soil were investigated in this study. Samples were collected from Ziya e-waste recycling area in Tianjin, northern China, and the soil microbial communities were then analyzed by the high-throughput MiSeq 16S rRNA sequencing to assess the effects of soil properties, heavy metals, and PBDEs on the soil microbial community. Candidatus Nitrososphaera, Steroidobacter and Kaistobacter were the dominant microbial species in the soils. Similar microbial metabolic functions, including amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport, were found in all soil samples. Redundancy analysis and variation partition analysis revealed that the microbial community was mainly influenced by PBDEs (including BDE 183, BDE 99, BDE 100 and BDE 154) in horizontal soil samples. However, TN, biomass, BDE 100, BDE 99 and BDE 66 were the major drivers shaping the microbial community in vertical soil samples.

Herein, we report a Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling for the synthesis of benzonitriles from aryl (pseudo)halides and an electrophilic cyanating reagent, 2-methyl-2-phenyl malononitrile (MPMN). MPMN is a bench-stable, carbon-bound electrophilic CN reagent that does not release cyanide under the reaction conditions. A variety of medicinally relevant benzonitriles can be made in good yields. Addition of NaBr to the reaction mixture allows for the use of more challenging aryl electrophiles such as aryl chlorides, tosylates, and triflates. Mechanistic investigations suggest that NaBr plays a role in facilitating oxidative addition with these substrates.

Human nails have been increasingly used as a biomarker for human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In the present study, the fingernails of e-waste-dismantling workers from Longtang town, Qingyuan city, rural residents from Shijiao town, Qingyuan city, and urban residents from Guangzhou city, respectively, were collected from South China to monitor the human burdens of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs in the nails of the e-waste-dismantling workers, and urban and rural residents were 412, 129, and 82.1 ng g(-1), respectively, and the median concentrations of Sigma(20)PCBs were 108, 8.4, and 22.1 ng g(-1), respectively. The levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the nails of e-waste-dismantling workers were significantly higher as compared to those for urban and rural residents (p< 0.05), implying the continuous and greater exposure to these chemicals in the e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209 (92-98%) was the major congener of PBDEs and CB 52 (26-51%) was the main congener of PCB in nail samples. However, no significant gender difference was observed for PBDE and PCB levels in nails from all three investigated areas, and no significant correlation was found between their levels and the age of the participants. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of CBs 95 and 132 indicated that the external sources (e.g.dust and/or air) were the primary sources for CBs 95 and 132 in human nails from the e-waste area, while the contribution from the internal sources (e.g.serum) could be in a small percentage. The results of this study indicate that human nails can be used as a proper indicator of human exposure to PCBs and PBDEs, and further studies are needed by a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the PCB and PBDE levels in the nails and serum and/or other internal tissues. A class of aryne precursors, that is, 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonates, has been developed through well-established synthetic routes, which allow the formation of arynes under relatively mild conditions. All the aryne precursors were obtained from phenols and 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle reagent with relatively low toxicity, and subjected to nucleophilic addition reactions, providing addition products in yields of 24 to 92%, and to cycloaddition reactions, affording cycloadducts in yields up to 80%. This work provides interesting insights into the mechanisms of aryne generation. In addition, 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonate was successfully employed in the total synthesis of (+/-)-aporphine.
