Nano-colloidal suspensions of nanomaterials in a fluid, nanofluids, are appealing because of their interesting properties related to heat transfer processes. While nanomaterials based on transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have been widely studied in catalysis, sensing, and energy storage applications, there are few studies of nanofluids based on TMCs for heat transfer applications. In this study, the preparation and analysis of nanofluids based on 2D-WS2 in a typical heat transfer fluid (HTF) used in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants are reported. Nanofluids prepared using an exfoliation process exhibited well-defined nanosheets and were highly stable. The nanofluids were characterized in terms of properties related to their application in CSP. The presence of WS2 nanosheets did not modify significantly the surface tension, the viscosity, or the isobaric specific heat, but the thermal conductivity was improved by up to 30%. The U-r factor, which characterizes the thermal efficiency of the fluid in the solar collector, shows an enhancement of up to 22% in the nanofluid, demonstrating great promise for CSP applications. The Reynolds number and friction factor of the fluid were not significantly modified by the addition of the nanomaterial to the HTF, which is also positive for practical applications in CSP plants. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the nanoparticle/fluid interface showed an irreversible dissociative adsorption of diphenyl oxide molecules on the WS2 edge, with very low kinetic barrier. The resulting decoration of the WS2 edge dramatically affects the nature of the interface interactions and is therefore expected to affect significantly the rheological and transport properties of the nanofluids.

We report on a detailed multi-spectroscopic analysis of the structures and internal dynamics of diphenylether and its aggregates with up to three water molecules by employing molecular beam experiments. The application of stimulated Raman/UV and IR/UV double resonance methods as well as chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in combination with quantum-chemical computations yield the energetically preferred monomer and cluster geometries. Furthermore, the complex internal dynamics of the diphenylether monomer and the one-water clusters are analysed. In the cluster with three water molecules, water forms a cyclic structure similar to the isolated water trimer. The interactions ruling the structures of the higher-order water clusters are a combination of the ones identified for the two monohydrate isomers, with dispersion being a decisive contribution for systems that have a delicate energetic balance between different hydrogen-bonded arrangements of similar energy.

In order to meet the demand of large-scale production of organic solar cells and concept of green chemistry, it is essential to develop environment friendly solvent to fabricate OSCs. In this paper, we utilize thiophene (TH) and diphenyl ether (DPE) as halogen-free processing solvent to optimize performance of OSCs based on PTB7-Th:PC71BM, and we choose chlorobenzene (CB) and 1,8-diiodineoctane (DIO) combination as comparison. For PTB7-Th:PC71BM blend film based on pure TH solvent, the blend film exhibits high photoelectron conversion, efficient exciton separate and charges collection and well developed morphology properties, thus, higher Voc, Jsc and FF were obtained than that of pure CB solvent. Furthermore, excellent photovoltaic performance was achieved with the addition of additive. The PCE of 9.02% from TH:5% DPE system was achieved without any thermal or solvent treatments (the pure TH processed devices PCE is 6.93%), while CB (with 2% DIO) based devices show a lower PCE of 7.41% (the pure CB processed devices PCE is 4.06%). The enhanced photovoltaic performance demonstrates that halogen-free solvent of thiophene provides a new strategy to large-scale fabrication of organic solar cells in future.

Background: Neurotoxic effects of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) at low levels have not been well studied in human population, and whether the associations can be explained by thyroid hormones (THs) remains unclear. Objectives: We examined the associations of prenatal PBDE exposures with THs in cord plasma and neurobehavior of children at 2 and 4 years among general population in China. Methods: Participants were mother-child pairs in the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study. Nine PBDE congeners and THs (thyroid stimulating hormone, total thyroxine, free thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, and free triiodothyronine) were determined in cord plasma. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1.5-5) were completed by caregivers to assess children’s neurobehavioral development at 2 and 4 years. In the final analyses, 199 and 307 mother-child pairs at 2 and 4 years were included to examine associations of PBDEs with CBCL scores using Pearson-scale-adjusted Poisson regressions, and 339 subjects were included in linear regression models to investigate the associations between PBDEs and THs. Results: BDE-47 had the highest detection rate of 83.82% with the median concentration of 0.19 ng/g lipid, followed by BDE-28, -99, -100 and -153 with detection rates nearly 50%. We found positive associations between prenatal PBDE concentrations and children’s neurobehavior, including Somatic Complaints, Withdrawn, Sleep Problems and Internalizing Problems in girls, and Somatic Complaints and Attention Problems in boys. We also observed inverse associations of the sum of BDE-47, – 28, – 99, -100 and -153 with THs. However, by adding THs to the models examining associations between PBDEs and CBCL, the main results didn’t measurably change. Conclusions: This study adds new knowledge that prenatal PBDEs at low levels may be related to long-lasting behavioral abnormalities in children and reduced THs in cord plasma. However, the hypothesis that the neurotoxic impact of PBDEs may be explained by alterations in cord THs was not supported.

A micro fabricated chip-based wearable air sampler was used to monitor the personnel exposure of volatile chemical concentrations in microenvironments. Six teenagers participated in this study and 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including naphthalene, 3-decen-1-ol, hexanal, nonanal, methyl salicylate and limonene gave the highest abundance during routine daily activity. VOC exposure associated with daily activities and the location showed strong agreements with two of the participant’s results. One of these subjects had the highest exposure to methyl salicylate that was supported by the use of a topical analgesic balm containing this compound. Environmental based air quality monitoring followed by the personnel exposure studies provided additional evidence associated to the main locations where the participants traveled. Toluene concentrations observed at a gas station were exceptionally high, with the highest amount observed at 1213.1 ng m(-3). One subject had the highest exposure to toluene and the GPS data showed clear evidence of activities neighboring a gas station. This study shows that this wearable air sampler has potential applications including hazardous VOC exposure monitoring in occupational hazard assessment for certain professions, for example in industries that involve direct handling of petroleum products.

Despite decades-long bans on the production and use of certain chemicals, many halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) are persistent and can bioaccumulate in the marine environment with the potential to cause physiological harm to marine fauna. Highly lipid-rich tissue (e.g., marine mammal blubber) functions as a reservoir for HOCs, and selecting ideal indicator species is a priority for retrospective and proactive screening efforts. We selected five marine mammal species as possible indicators for the Southern California Bight (SCB) and applied a non-targeted analytical method paired with an automated data reduction strategy to catalog a broad range of known, known but unexpected, and unknown compounds in their blubber. A total of 194 HOCs were detected across the study species (n = 25 individuals), 81% of which are not routinely monitored, including 30 halogenated natural products and 45 compounds of unknown structure and origin. The cetacean species (long-beaked common dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, and Risso’s dolphin) averaged 128 HOCs, whereas pinnipeds (California sea lion and Pacific harbor seal) averaged 47 HOCs. We suspect this disparity can be attributed to differences in life history, foraging strategies, and/or enzyme-mediated metabolism. Our results support proposing (1) the long- and short-beaked common dolphin as apex marine predator sentinels for future and retrospective biomonitoring of the SCB ecosystem and (2) the use of non-targeted contaminant analyses to identify and prioritize emerging contaminants. The use of a sentinel marine species together with the non-targeted analytical approach will enable a proactive approach to environmental contaminant monitoring. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Toward a more rigorous inspection of food contact materials, the importance of sample preparation for nontarget screening should be addressed. Direct immersion-solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (DI-SPME-GC-MS) was optimized for nontarget screening of migrants in 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and 95% ethanol food simulants by response surface methodology (RSM) in the present study. Optimum conditions were DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber, no pH adjustment for 10% and 95% ethanol simulant but pH adjustment to 7 for 3% acetic acid simulant, no salt addition, 5 min preincubation, 55 min extraction at 70 degrees C, and 8 min desorption at 250 degrees C. In addition, 9.5 times dilution of 95% ethanol samples prior to extraction was required. pH modification of 3% acetic acid samples was found to be critical for the extraction of amines. The proposed methodology was then evaluated by determining the limit of detection (LOD) as well as repeatability of 35 food contact materials-related substances. Except for those amines and diols which have a relatively high LOD, the LODs of the rest of the substances were 0.1-14.1 mu g/kg with a precision of 1.9-23.0% in 10% ethanol and were 0.1-20.2 mu g/kg with a precision of 2.5-19.6% in 3% acetic acid simulant. The LOD and precision in 95% ethanol simulant were 0.7-163.7 mu g/kg and 1.4-26.8%, respectively. The proposed method can be applied for an overall screening of migrants from these three simulants at even trace levels, though attention should be paid to some specific analytes, e.g., diols and amines, which could have a high LOD and toxicity.

The comparability of data from active (ACT) and passive sampling (PAS) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in air is hindered by uncertainties related to the derivation of sampling rates and concentrations, as well as differences in the duration, volume and frequency of sampling. Although data from ACT have been used extensively in short-term PAS calibration studies, no attempts have been made to evaluate the comparability of long-term trends calculated from PAS to established ACT trends. This is crucial, as continuous long-term ACT is unfeasible in most regions of the world. To address these challenges, we calculated and compared trends for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at the six sites in Europe with at least 5 years of co-located ACT and PAS data (2012-2016): Birkenes, Kosetice, Pallas, Rao, Storhofoi and Zeppelin. Strong agreement of ACT and PAS trends was observed for most OCPs and PCBs. Apart from two PCBs at Storhofoi, all pairs of ACT and PAS trends followed the same direction. However, differences in the magnitude, significance and confidence intervals of their slopes were observed for some compounds and were primarily attributed to the short duration of the PAS time series. Despite some limitations, our results suggest that the comparability of ACT and PAS POP trends will continue to improve with additional years of data. This study confirms the suitability of PAS for the calculation of long-term POP trends in air, and highlights the importance of continuous sampling at established monitoring sites with consistent analytical methods.

Lignin depolymerization into its aromatic monomers is necessary for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, but cleavage of the C-O ether bonds and C-C bonds between the monomers is challenging. In this study, we investigated bond cleavage reactions of benzyl phenyl ether, diphenyl ether, and biphenyl, which served as models for lignin compounds with alpha-O-4, 4-O-5, and 5-5 linkages, respectively, by using various metal catalysts in supercritical water at 673 K and a water density of 0.5 g cm(-3) without added hydrogen gas. Benzyl phenyl ether was decomposed without catalyst. We found that palladium, platinum, and rhodium catalysts supported on carbon showed activity for cleavage of the C-O ether bonds in benzyl phenyl ether and diphenyl ether but not for the bonds between the aromatic units of biphenyl. Using anisole as a model compound, we also found that methoxy groups, which are present in lignin containing coniferyl and sinapyl alcohol monomers, were converted into phenol groups or were decomposed. The reaction conditions described herein have great potential utility for the conversion of lignin, which can be decomposed and dissolved in supercritical water, into valuable aromatic compounds.
