The current work explores deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as heat transfer fluids (HTFs) primarily for generating concentrated solar power. The eutectic composition of the DES comprising diphenyl ether and DL-menthol as the hydrogen bond acceptor and hydrogen bond donor was initially computed through the quantum chemical-based COSMO-SAC model. To improve upon the thermal performance and reduce the interfacial resistance, DESs were modified by dispersing hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles with weight percent ranging from 0.02 to 0.10. Thermophysical properties, namely, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity, of the HTFs were then measured as a function of temperature. Further, based on these four parameters, the Mouromtseff number (Mo) was calculated to rank the nanoparticle-dispersed DESs. The nanofluid consisting of DES-1 with 0.02 wt % of nanoparticles gave the highest Mo value, and hence, it was further considered for the experimental forced convection study and process simulation using an Aspen Plus simulator. From the forced convection experiment temperature profiles, the heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number (Nu) were evaluated and compared for nanofluids with the corresponding base fluid. The flow behavior of the thermal fluid along the characteristic length of the test section was investigated for both the laminar and turbulent regimes. The effectiveness of the HTF in terms of steam generation capacity was predicted, and it was observed that the nanofluid with 0.02 wt % was able to successfully convert 100% of the input water (15 kg/h) into superheated steam at the temperature of 494.15 K.

Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

Among various techniques for treating polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), adsorption and removal methods using carbon materials are widely applied to remove and decompose organic pollutants with high efficiency. Of many carbon allotropes, theoretically developed graphyne has numerous promising applicabilities for its strong carbon chemical bond, large conjugate system, good chemical stability, and excellent electrical conductivity. To evaluate the PBDE removal capability of graphyne as an adsorbent, we investigated the adsorption properties of ten PBDE species on graphyne using the density functional theory calculation. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the hydrophobicity and adsorption characteristics of PBDEs and found that the adsorption energy increased with the hydrophobicity and the bromination number, indicating a linear relationship for only seven samples. In BDE154, BDE183, and BDE209, however, this linearity was not clearly found because when the bromine groups of the PBDE structures were located at 6,6 ‘, two phenyl rings repelled each other to limit adsorption. From a water solvation model, graphyne also indicated a high adsorption capacity of PBDEs. It is worth noting that graphyne is considered to be a suitable material for PBDE adsorption, and the adsorption reaction may vary depending on the structural characteristics and hydrophobicity of the PBDEs.

In this study, we have designed and synthesized a low-bandgap polymer, DPP-Qx, using quinoxaline (Qx), a non-alkylated weak acceptor, with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as an electron donor. The incorporation of Qx into DPP leads to the highest occupied molecular orbital level at -5.1 eV with a narrow optical bandgap (1.25 eV). The synthesized polymer is utilized in photovoltaics, and the photovoltaic properties are studied. This DPP-Qx with fullerene acceptors in polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibits efficiency of 3.26%. Moreover, a minimum energy loss of 0.57 eV along with high extended external quantum efficiency is achieved with the DPP-Qx electron donor. The thermal, electrical and optical properties, energy levels and hole mobility of the synthesized polymer are studied and discussed.

We report the synthesis and characterization of an arene-fused N-annulated perylene diimide dimer (F-NPDI2) and evaluate the new material’s suitability to be used as a non-fullerene acceptor for organic solar cells. Photovoltaic devices were fabricated using the donor polymer PTB7-Th. A direct comparison of bulk heterojunction active layers processed from halogenated and non-halogenated solvent/additive systems was made. Use of the solvent 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) and the solvent additive 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) led to best power conversion efficiency of ca. 2.5%. Photovoltaic devices had high open circuit voltages upwards of 1.12 V, representing one of the highest for perylene diimide based systems. The active layer morphology and subsequent device performance was insensitive to the nature and volume of solvent additive used for processing and type of coating method (spin vs slot-die) making for a robust bulk heterojunction for large area organic solar cell applications.

We combined a data science-driven method with quantum chemistry calculations, and applied it to the battery electrolyte problem. We performed quantum chemistry calculations on the coordination energy (E-coord) of five alkali metal ions (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) to electrolyte solvent, which is intimately related to ion transfer at the electrolyte/electrode interface. Three regression methods, namely, multiple linear regression (MLR), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and exhaustive search with linear regression (ES-LiR), were employed to find the relationship between E-coord and descriptors. Descriptors include both ion and solvent properties, such as the radius of metal ions or the atomic charge of solvent molecules. Our results clearly indicate that the ionic radius and atomic charge of the oxygen atom that is connected to the metal ion are the most important descriptors. Good prediction accuracy for E-coord of 0.127 eV was obtained using ES-LiR, meaning that we can predict E-coord for any alkali ion without performing quantum chemistry calculations for ion-solvent pairs. Further improvement in the prediction accuracy was made by applying the exhaustive search with Gaussian process, which yields 0.016 eV for the prediction accuracy of E-coord.

A new convenient and versatile halogenating system (R(4)NHal/NOHSO4), giving straightforward and general access to halogenated 3,5-diaryl- and alkylarylisoxazoles, pyrazoles and electron-rich benzenes from the corresponding scaffolds, is suggested. The method provides excellent regioselectivity, scalability to the gram scale, and a broad scope for both aromatics and halogens. A three-step, one-pot reaction protocol was developed, and a series of 3,5-diaryl-4-haloisoxazoles has been efficiently synthesized from 1,2-diarylcyclopropanes under suggested nitrosating-halogenating conditions.

I found the field of Chemistry; Food Science & Technology; Nutrition & Dietetics very interesting. Food volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis is a useful tool in authentication and classification processes, but, to date, the analysis of wheat VOCs is still little explored. In this study a method of analysis based on solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was optimized by testing different types of fibers, sample preparation methods and amounts, extraction temperatures and times, desorption times and oven programs. The analysis was applied to six wheat cultivars harvested in different areas, and permitted to identify 158 VOCs, of which 98 never found before. A principal component analysis performed on the dataset showed that the area of cultivation accounted for the highest source of variability. Partial least squares analysis permitted to correctly classify wheats based on their cultivation area and species, and to identify the most discriminant VOCs. These results are promising for the study of the influence of geographical origin on wheat quality.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and unsubstituted/methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs/Me-PAHs) were simultaneously monitored in the air samples collected from Vietnamese urban and vehicular waste processing areas by using polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling (PUF-PAS) method. Concentrations (pg m(-3)) of organic pollutants decreased in the order: PAHs (median 29,000; range 5100-100,000) > Me-PAHs (6000; 1000-33,000) > PCBs (480; 170 -1100) > PBDEs (11; 5.3-86) > NBFRs (0.20; n. d. – 51) > BB-153 (n.d.). The difference in total PCB and PBDE concentrations between the urban and waste processing air samples was not statistically significant. Meanwhile, levels of PAHs, Me-PAHs, benzo [a]pyrene equivalents (BaP-EQs), and toxic equivalents of dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-TEQs) were much higher in the waste processing sites. This is the first report on the abundance of mono- and di-CBs (notably CB-11) in the air from a developing country, suggesting their roles as emerging and ubiquitous air pollutants. Our results have indicated potential sources of specific organic pollutants such as dioxin-like PCBs, PAHs, and Me-PAHs from improper treatment of end-of-life vehicles and other vehicle related materials (e.g., waste oils and rubber tires), as well as current emission of PCBs and PBDEs in the urban area in Vietnam. Further atmospheric monitoring studies should be conducted in this developing country that cover both legacy and emerging contaminants with a focus on areas affected by rapid urbanization and informal waste processing activities. To investigate overall pollution and potential risk of 32 targets (11 PBDEs, 8 NBFRs, and 13 OPFRs) in indoor and outdoor environments, dust and PM10 samples were sampled from non-occupational and occupational zones in Chengdu, China. Sigma Cl-OPFRs, BDE-209, and DBDPE were the dominant constitutes in both the non occupational and occupational dust. Regarding the PM10, no significant differences were found between the kitchen and the living room for studied OPFRs except TDCIPP, and TCEP, TCPP, TEHP, and TCP displayed significant correlation among the kitchen, the living room and personal samples. Profiles of the OPFRs in the PM10 from occupational areas presented great variation and ranked as: Sigma Aryl-OPFRs < Sigma Alkyl-OPFRs < Sigma Cl-OPFRs. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the investigated FRs via dust suggested dust ingestion and inhalation were the main exposure route to FRs, and the total of EDIs were at least one order of magnitude lower than reference data, indicating a low risk for the general public in Chengdu. However, with increasing usage of FRs in daily goods, a long-term monitoring should be conducted. Recommanded Product: Diphenyl oxide.
