In this work, we provide a detailed account of the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of rhenium disulfide (ReS2), a promising new-generation two-dimensional material. By screening LPE in a wide range of solvents, we show that the most optimal solvents are characterized by similar Hildebrand or dispersive Hansen solubility parameters of 25 and 18 MPa1/2, respectively. Such values are attained by solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and 1-butanol. In line with solution thermodynamics, we interpret the conditions for high-yield exfoliation as a matching of the solvent and ReS2 solubility parameters. Using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as an exemplary exfoliation solvent, we undertook a detailed analysis of the exfoliated ReS2. In-depth morphological, structural, and elemental characterization outlined that the LPE procedure presented here produces few-layer, anisotropically stacked, and chemically pure ReS2 platelets with long-term stability against oxidation. These results underscore the suitability of LPE to batch-produce few-layer and pristine ReS2 in solvents that have a solubility parameter close to 25 MPa1/2.

In this work it is shown a precise way to optimize the heat generation in high viscosity magnetic colloids, by adjusting the Neel relaxation time in core/shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, for magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) applications. To pursue this goal, Fe3O4/ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized with 8.5 nm mean core diameter, encapsulated in a shell of similar to 1.1 nm of thickness, where the Zn atomic ratio (Zn/(Zn + Co) at%) changes from 33 to 68 at%. The magnetic measurements are consistent with a rigid interface coupling between the core and shell phases, where the effective magnetic anisotropy systematically decreases when the Zn concentration increases, without a significant change of the saturation magnetization. Experiments of MFH of 0.1 wt% of these particles dispersed in water, in Dulbecco modified Eagles minimal essential medium, and a high viscosity butter oil, result in a large specific loss power (SLP), up to 150 W g(-1), when the experiments are performed at 571 kHz and 200 Oe. The SLP was optimized adjusting the shell composition, showing a maximum for intermediate Zn concentration. This study shows a way to maximize the heat generation in viscous media like cytosol, for those biomedical applications that require smaller particle sizes.

The combination of materials with different magnetic properties at the nanoscale can lead to phenomena such as exchange bias via coupling effects, which shows huge potential for applications, e.g., in storage media or magnetic sensors. Value addition to glycerol, the sole co-product in biodiesel production, will lead to reform of the overall biodiesel economy. Different valuable chemicals can be produced from glycerol using heterogeneous catalysis and these valuable chemicals are useful in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fuels, soap, paints, and fine chemicals. Therefore, the conversion of glycerol to valuable chemicals using heterogeneous catalysis is a noteworthy area of research. Etherification of glycerol with alkenes or alcohols is an important reaction in converting glycerol to various value-added chemicals. This article describes reaction of glycerol with benzyl alcohol in solvent-free medium by using a clay supported modified heteropolyacid (HPA), Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 (Cs-DTP/K-10) as solid catalyst and its comparison with other catalysts in a batch reactor. Mono-Benzyl glycerol ether (MBGE) was the major product formed in the reaction along with formation of di-benzyl glycerol ether (DBGE). The effects of different parameters were studied to optimize the reaction parameters. This work provides an insight into characterization of Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 catalyst by advanced techniques such as surface area measurement, X-ray analysis, ICP-MS, FT-IR, and SEM. Reaction products were characterized and confirmed by using the GCMS method. The kinetic model was developed from an insight into the reaction mechanism. The apparent energy of activation was found to be 18.84 kcal/mol.

In this study, the influence of grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) was studied on citric acid and zinc oxide incorporated cellulose-based hydrogel films. The effect of GFSE (0.25-1.0%, v/v) on hydrogel films was examined for their physico-chemical, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The swelling ratio, tensile strength and thermal stability of films decreased with increase in GFSE concentrations. On the other hand, elongation (%) and antioxidant activity of films were found to be 34-60% and 25-79%, respectively for increasing amounts of GFSE. FESEM and FETEM clearly showed that two different types of nanoparticles (50-90 nm and 5-10 nm) were present in GFSE incorporated films. The release of polyphenolic compounds and zinc from films was in sustained manner. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel films exhibited antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. All these results indicate that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel films could find their potential applications in wound healing.

MWW type zeolites are characterized by the presence of zeolitic layers of 2.5 nm thickness, containing 10-member ring sinusoidal channels inside and supercavities with 12-member ring openings located on their surfaces. Expansion and pillaring of layered zeolites increase the access to active sites and can enable or facilitate catalytic activity towards larger reactant molecules. This goal is explored in this work reporting the pillaring of layered zeolite MCM-56 with MWW topology by tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) treatment with the assistance of isopropanol, aimed at obtaining hierarchical micro-mesoporous systems. MCM-56 (Si/Al = 12) was synthesized with hexamethyleneimine as a structure-directing and aniline as a structure-promoting agent. Hierarchical porous systems were obtained using two different pillaring methods: (1) with TEOS only and (2) with TEOS mixed with isopropanol. The MWW framework was preserved during swelling/pillaring in both methods. Pillared zeolites obtained via alcohol-assisted pillaring possessed unique intermediate micro-mesopores with the size of about 2 nm. IR study revealed a decrease in the concentration of accessible acid centers upon pillaring. However, the fraction of acid sites on the external surface, accessible for adsorption of large molecules, increased by up to 90%. Catalytic activity was evaluated in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol. Pillaring resulted in reduction of the acid site concentrations, but the materials retained high catalytic activity. Pillaring in the presence of alcohol produced increased turnover frequency values based on the concentrations of the external acid sites.

The hierarchical structure of zeolites plays a crucial role in determining their catalytic performance. Here, the effect of the hierarchical architecture and surface topology of pillared MWW zeolites on the catalytic properties of liquid alkylation between mesitylene and benzyl alcohol was investigated. Pillared MWW zeolite catalysts exhibited excellent activity (similar to 100% conversion) due to their elegant pore architecture, which could largely improve the accessibility of bulk molecules toward active sites on the external surface. In addition, molecular simulation showed that lamellar MWW zeolites with a 12-membered ring semicup surface topology could more effectively accommodate and stabilize the large intermediates formed in alkylation reactions compared with MFI zeolites, resulting in outstanding selectivity for 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (similar to 100%). The Thiele modulus (phi) and effectiveness factor (eta) verified that the resultant pillared MWW zeolites possessed a high degree of utilization without internal diffusion constraints under the present reaction conditions.

Optical tissue clearing using dibenzyl ether (DBE) or BABB (1 part benzyl alcohol and 2 parts benzyl benzoate) is easy in application and allows deep-tissue imaging of a wide range of specimens. Lignin valorization is significantly influenced by the degrees of lignin condensation measured by the amount of cleaved beta-O-4 ether linkages and interunit C-C linkages formed during biomass fractionation. To minimize the cleavage of aryl ether and formation of C-C linkages, a p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH)/choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system with hydrotropic properties was evaluated. The ChC1 was chosen to control the H+ concentration of the p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system. Compared with p-TsOH/H2O, the degradation of beta-O-4 was kept in a similar rate during p-TsOH/ChCl fractionation; however, the formation of C-C linkage was slower. Under 75/25 p-TsOH/ChCl mass ratio at 80 degrees C for 20 min, 76.6 % of miscanthus lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 30.9 %, and 88.9 % of wheat straw lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 33.6 %, can be dissolved. In addition, the low polar and layered structure of hydrotropic p-TsOH/ChCl system has a strong ability to dissolve lignin, which resulted in lignin with larger particle size and lower surface charge. The results also indicated that lignin from p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system has great potential for lignin depolymerization to aromatics for valorization.

Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1 : 1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.
