Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. The physicochemical properties of spinel oxide magnetic nanoparticles depend critically on both their size and shape. In particular, spinel oxide nanocrystals with cubic morphology have shown superior properties in comparison to their spherical counterparts in a variety of fields, like, for example, biomedicine. Therefore, having an accurate control over the nanoparticle shape and size, while preserving the crystallinity, becomes crucial for many applications. However, despite the increasing interest in spinel oxide nanocubes there are relatively few studies on this morphology due to the difficulty to synthesize perfectly defined cubic nanostructures, especially below 20 nm. Here we present a rationally designed synthesis pathway based on the thermal decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate to obtain high quality nanocubes over a wide range of sizes. This pathway enables the synthesis of monodisperse Fe3O4 nanocubes with edge length in the 9-80 nm range, with excellent cubic morphology and high crystallinity by only minor adjustments in the synthesis parameters. The accurate size control provides evidence that even 1-2 nm size variations can be critical in determining the functional properties, for example, for improved nuclear magnetic resonance T-2 contrast or enhanced magnetic hyperthermia. The rationale behind the changes introduced in the synthesis procedure (e.g., the use of three solvents or adding Na-oleate) is carefully discussed. The versatility of this synthesis route is demonstrated by expanding its capability to grow other spinel oxides such as Co-ferrites, Mn-ferrites, and Mn3O4 of different sizes. In this work, we provide a detailed account of the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of rhenium disulfide (ReS2), a promising new-generation two-dimensional material. By screening LPE in a wide range of solvents, we show that the most optimal solvents are characterized by similar Hildebrand or dispersive Hansen solubility parameters of 25 and 18 MPa1/2, respectively. Such values are attained by solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and 1-butanol. In line with solution thermodynamics, we interpret the conditions for high-yield exfoliation as a matching of the solvent and ReS2 solubility parameters. Using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as an exemplary exfoliation solvent, we undertook a detailed analysis of the exfoliated ReS2. In-depth morphological, structural, and elemental characterization outlined that the LPE procedure presented here produces few-layer, anisotropically stacked, and chemically pure ReS2 platelets with long-term stability against oxidation. These results underscore the suitability of LPE to batch-produce few-layer and pristine ReS2 in solvents that have a solubility parameter close to 25 MPa1/2.

MWW type zeolites are characterized by the presence of zeolitic layers of 2.5 nm thickness, containing 10-member ring sinusoidal channels inside and supercavities with 12-member ring openings located on their surfaces. Expansion and pillaring of layered zeolites increase the access to active sites and can enable or facilitate catalytic activity towards larger reactant molecules. This goal is explored in this work reporting the pillaring of layered zeolite MCM-56 with MWW topology by tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) treatment with the assistance of isopropanol, aimed at obtaining hierarchical micro-mesoporous systems. MCM-56 (Si/Al = 12) was synthesized with hexamethyleneimine as a structure-directing and aniline as a structure-promoting agent. Hierarchical porous systems were obtained using two different pillaring methods: (1) with TEOS only and (2) with TEOS mixed with isopropanol. The MWW framework was preserved during swelling/pillaring in both methods. Pillared zeolites obtained via alcohol-assisted pillaring possessed unique intermediate micro-mesopores with the size of about 2 nm. IR study revealed a decrease in the concentration of accessible acid centers upon pillaring. However, the fraction of acid sites on the external surface, accessible for adsorption of large molecules, increased by up to 90%. Catalytic activity was evaluated in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol. Pillaring resulted in reduction of the acid site concentrations, but the materials retained high catalytic activity. Pillaring in the presence of alcohol produced increased turnover frequency values based on the concentrations of the external acid sites.

We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.
