In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

Ammonia (NH3) electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) is an important reaction in direct NH3 fuel cells, NH3 electrolyzer, and NH3-based electrochemical sensors. However, its slow kinetics and structure-sensitive properties require specific electrocatalyst designs. In this study, Ir-decorated N nanocubes are developed as unique surface engineered model catalysts. For the first time, we find that a trace amount of Ir (less than 2%) could increase the AOR activity of N nanocubes by more than twice. Theoretical simulation results also illustrate that the surfacedecorated Ir could lower the energy barrier in the rate determining *NH formation step on N surfaces, thus increasing activity in accordance with experimental findings. Additionally, Ir and Ni(OH)(2)-decorated N nanocubes can significantly improve the durability. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface engineering in catalyst synthesis and pave the way of advanced electrocatalyst designs for ammonia oxidation and other catalytic reactions.

Recently high yield of cycloalkanes originates from selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil under mild conditions, which still encounters the great challenges. Herein, mordenite-supported ruthenium bifunctional catalyst (Ru3%/M) was prepared by using the deposition-precipitation (DP) method for the HDO reaction of the petroleum ether-extractable portions (PEEP) from alkali catalytic ethanolysis of lignin (CEOL). Ru3%/M catalyst was characterized systematically by XRD, XPS, FTIRS, NH3-TPD, N-2-adsorption, SEM, and TEM, indicating that it had the moderate acid sites and uniform Ru nanoparticles dispersion. The synthesized catalyst was further tested for the HDO per-formance of diphenyl ether, oxybis(methylene)dibenzene, and anisole, respectively. Results showed that three lignin model compounds can be converted to high yield of cycloalkanes under 160 degrees C and 3 MPa H-2 in n-hexane. This catalyst showed the high catalytic activity for diphenyl ether HDO reaction, the con -version decreased slightly to 87.6% after five recycle times. Furthermore, catalyst feed mass was the key factor for HDO reaction of raw PEEP from CEOL, promoting the HDO reaction process to produce high yield of cycloalkanes. Interestingly, the mass ratio between catalyst feed and raw PEEP was 1, thus 74.36% relative content (RC) of cycloalkanes can be obtained. A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrorheological/magnetorheological fluid consisting of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite dispersed in silicone oil with a particle concentration of 5 vol % is fabricated. Its rheological characteristics under external electric and magnetic fields are investigated by using a rotational rheometer. Under the electric or magnetic field, the PANI/zinc-ferrite particles form chain-like structures, demonstrating a solid-like state.

A new strategy to chemically synthesize exchange-coupled SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites by in situ decomposition of SmCox(5 < x < 8.5) is reported in this work. Our synthesis starts with the fabrication of Co/Sm2O3 (Sm to Co atomic ratio of Sm/Co = 1:4.2), which can be reduced into 40-nm SmCo5 single crystal nanoparticles by Ca under the protection of CaO, showing a high coercivity of 2.85 T and saturation magnetization (M-s) of 0.0671 A.m(2).g(-1). By changing the Sm/Co to 1:4.5, 1:4.8 and 1:5.2, SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites with different proportions were acquired using the same process. Owing to the in situ decomposition of SmCox intermediate, the small size (both of their size less than 10 nm) and uniform phase distribution were achieved in our nanocomposites. Thus, the as-prepared nanocomposites display a strong exchange-coupling interaction. As a consequence, SmCo5/Sm2Co17(Sm/Co = 1:5.2) exhibits a coercivity of 1.23 T and enhanced M-7T(magnetization at 7 T) of 0.0812 A.m(2).g(-1), increasing by 21% than pure SmCo5. Our synthesis provides a new protocol to prepare exchange-coupled high-performance nanocomposites. A silver(i)-mediated oxidative N-H/C(sp(3))-H coupling of NH-azoles with ethers has been developed. Various substrates were well N-alkylated in this methodology and the corresponding desired products were given in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the late-stage alkylation of bioactive molecules was achieved. This protocol involved C(sp(3))-N bond formation via a radical pathway generated in the presence of low cost and readily available heptafluoroisopropyl iodide (i-C3F7I). Here, we have successfully synthesised and purified multifunctional PLGA-based nanoparticles by the co-encapsulation of an anticancer drug (tetrandrine) and a magnetic material (Fe3O4). The obtained Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs had a uniform spherical shape with a particle size of approximately 199nm and a negative surface charge of -18.0mV, displaying a high encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, TEM studies provided representative images of the purification process of the magnetic nanoparticles with MACS((R)) technology. The MFM and VSM results indicated that both the Fe3O4 NPs and Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs were superparamagnetic. The DSC spectrum demonstrated that Tet was successfully encapsulated within the PLGA-based nanoparticles. Significantly, the release studies revealed NPs had a relatively slower release rate than free Tet after 8h’s initial burst release, which had decreased from 98% to 65% after 24h. In vitro cellular studies revealed that NPs could effectively penetrate into A549 cells and A549 multicellular spheroids to exert cytotoxicity, displaying a significantly high anti-proliferation effect. Moreover, western blot demonstrated that the co-loaded NPs had a higher anticancer activity by injuring lysosomes to activate the mitochondria pathway and induce A549 cell apoptosis. The magnetic characteristics and high anticancer activity support the use of Tet/Fe3O4 co-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles as a promising strategy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Value addition to glycerol, the sole co-product in biodiesel production, will lead to reform of the overall biodiesel economy. Different valuable chemicals can be produced from glycerol using heterogeneous catalysis and these valuable chemicals are useful in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fuels, soap, paints, and fine chemicals. Therefore, the conversion of glycerol to valuable chemicals using heterogeneous catalysis is a noteworthy area of research. Etherification of glycerol with alkenes or alcohols is an important reaction in converting glycerol to various value-added chemicals. This article describes reaction of glycerol with benzyl alcohol in solvent-free medium by using a clay supported modified heteropolyacid (HPA), Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 (Cs-DTP/K-10) as solid catalyst and its comparison with other catalysts in a batch reactor. Mono-Benzyl glycerol ether (MBGE) was the major product formed in the reaction along with formation of di-benzyl glycerol ether (DBGE). The effects of different parameters were studied to optimize the reaction parameters. This work provides an insight into characterization of Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40/K-10 catalyst by advanced techniques such as surface area measurement, X-ray analysis, ICP-MS, FT-IR, and SEM. Reaction products were characterized and confirmed by using the GCMS method. The kinetic model was developed from an insight into the reaction mechanism. The apparent energy of activation was found to be 18.84 kcal/mol.

Mesoporous TiO2(B) whisker was firstly applied as a support for synthesizing the novel sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/TiO2(B)). According to NH3-TPD, TG and Py-IR characterization results, it was found that the similar amount of sulfate group on TiO2(B) and anatase showed significantly different acid characteristics and catalytic performances. The total acid amount of SO42-/TiO2(B) was about 1.8 times as anatase-supported sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/Anatase). Simultaneously, the SO42-/TiO2(B) possessed higher percentage of Bronsted acid and more weak-medium acid strength than SO42-/Anatase. These acidic properties endowed SO42-/TiO2(B) with the increased esterification reaction rate and decreased alkylation byproduct selectivity compared with that of SO42-/Anatase. Structure-performance analysis exhibited that there were more bridged bidentate sulfate groups coordinated to the TiO2(B) in SO42-/TiO2(B), which could induce more Ti cations than that of the chelating one. This was the key factor to be responsible for the unique acid characteristics of SO42-/TiO2(B). The present work provides a novel solid superacid and might open a strategy to mediate the acid characteristic for sulfated solid superacid.

A combination of carbon ions/photons irradiation and hyperthermia as a novel therapeutic approach for the in-vitro treatment of pancreatic cancer BxPC3 cells is presented. The radiation doses used are 0-2 Gy for carbon ions and 0-7 Gy for 6 MV photons. Hyperthermia is realized via a standard heating bath, assisted by magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) that utilizes magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exposed to an alternating magnetic field of amplitude 19.5 mTesla and frequency 109.8 kHz. Starting from 37 degrees C, the temperature is gradually increased and the sample is kept at 42 degrees C for 30 min. For MFH, MNPs with a mean diameter of 19 nm and specific absorption rate of 110 +/- 30 W/g(Fe3)o(4) coated with a biocompatible ligand to ensure stability in physiological media are used. Irradiation diminishes the clonogenic survival at an extent that depends on the radiation type, and its decrease is amplified both by the MNPs cellular uptake and the hyperthermia protocol. Significant increases in DNA double-strand breaks at 6 h are observed in samples exposed to MNP uptake, treated with 0.75 Gy carbon-ion irradiation and hyperthermia. The proposed experimental protocol, based on the combination of hadron irradiation and hyperthermia, represents a first step towards an innovative clinical option for pancreatic cancer.
