Extensive characterizations, mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, are reported for co-crystalline (CC) poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide (PPO) films with many different low-molecular-mass guest molecules. These characterizations are also reported for the corresponding nanoporous crystalline (NC) phases, as obtained by suitable guest-removal procedures. Two well-separated NC forms, hereafter named alpha and beta, are obtained by guest removal from two well-separated groups of CC forms. alpha and beta NC forms can be easily recognized by reflections in WAXD patterns as well as by suitable FTIR crystalline peaks. Density and degree of crystallinity measurements confirm that both NC phases exhibit a density definitely smaller than for the amorphous phase (rho(am) = 1.04 g/cm(3) rho(beta) = 0.95 g/cm(3) > rho(alpha) = 0.93 g/cm(3)). Density functional theory calculations combined with geometrical analysis on PPO model systems indicate conformations suitable to fit the observed chain periodicities of the two crystalline forms (c = 5.28 and 5.47 angstrom, for alpha and beta NC forms, respectively).

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

The stability of a and beta nanoporous-crystalline (NC) forms of Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO), in the presence of guest molecules leading to crystallization in a and beta-form (alpha and beta-guests), is explored. Sorption of liquid guests at 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C is studied both for NC films and NC aerogels. WAXD and FTIR characterizations show that, for all considered conditions, NC alpha-phases after guest sorption/desorption remain unaltered. NC beta-phases, on the contrary, after alpha-guest sorption can be transformed in co-crystalline (CC) alpha-phases that after guest desorption are transformed in NC alpha-phases. All conducted experiments also show that possible planar orientations of NC films (c//or c perpendicular to orientations) remain essentially unaltered, after sorption of all considered guest molecules. The presently discovered beta ->alpha transition constitutes a route to obtain unoriented alpha-form films, which till now were not available by known preparation procedures.

A highly active difunctional Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 was prepared by thermally decomposing nickel tetracarbonyl onto gamma-Al2O3 impregnated with Mg2Si. The non-catalytic hydroconversion (NCHC) and catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) of the extract (E) and extraction residue (ER) from Yinggemajianfeng lignite were investigated over Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 at 240 degrees C in n-hexane. Benzyloxybenzene and oxybis(methylene)dibenzene were used as lignite-related model compounds to speculate the possible mechanisms for the catalytic hydrocracking and hydrogenation over Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3. As a result, more organic matter in ER was converted to soluble portion (SP) by the CHC than by the NCHC. The main SP from the CHC are chain alkanes and cyclanes, while that from the NCHC is rich in arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds. The results indicate that Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 effectively catalyze the hydrocracking of > C-alk-O-linkages and the hydrogenation of aromatic rings in E and ER.

Lignin valorization is significantly influenced by the degrees of lignin condensation measured by the amount of cleaved beta-O-4 ether linkages and interunit C-C linkages formed during biomass fractionation. To minimize the cleavage of aryl ether and formation of C-C linkages, a p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH)/choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system with hydrotropic properties was evaluated. The ChC1 was chosen to control the H+ concentration of the p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system. Compared with p-TsOH/H2O, the degradation of beta-O-4 was kept in a similar rate during p-TsOH/ChCl fractionation; however, the formation of C-C linkage was slower. Under 75/25 p-TsOH/ChCl mass ratio at 80 degrees C for 20 min, 76.6 % of miscanthus lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 30.9 %, and 88.9 % of wheat straw lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 33.6 %, can be dissolved. In addition, the low polar and layered structure of hydrotropic p-TsOH/ChCl system has a strong ability to dissolve lignin, which resulted in lignin with larger particle size and lower surface charge. The results also indicated that lignin from p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system has great potential for lignin depolymerization to aromatics for valorization.

Extractive distillation is a common method to separate the mixture, which has the low relative volatility. Many solvents were screened to separate the mixture based on the experiment. Because the number of candidate solvents is high and the experiment is time-consuming. Quantitative structure property relationship was introduced to model and evaluate the relative volatility of isopropanol and water mixture. A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Meso- and microporous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized through combination of the tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and single quaternary ammonium surfactant (Cph-ph-10-6) as dual templates. The structure-directing ability of Cph-ph-10-6 and TPA(+) was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. By tuning the molar ratios of Cph-ph-10-6/TPAOH from 5/0 to 5/8, the structure-directing effects between Cph-ph-10-6 and TPA(+) could be systematically modulated, resulting in the morphology of the mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites changed from ultrathin nanosheets, through splint like nanosheets, to condensed packing plates.
