In situ polymerization of poly aniline-SPEEK-PMA-based proton exchange membrane for DMFC application

Composite membranes based on sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)/phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) have been prepared by solution casting technique. SPEEK/PMA membrane surfaces are modified with polyaniline (PANI) by in situ polymerization. The structural and electrochemical properties of the surface modified membranes are studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and tensile strength. The AFM image shows that the hetero polyacids are better compatible with SPEEK matrix. The SPEEKs/PMAs membranes achieved acceptable proton conductivity with increasing in weight ratios of PMAs and reached highest proton conductivity of 5.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at room temperature. With Lower swelling ratio, high thermal stability, proton conductivity, and relative selectivity, SPEEKs/PMAs-PANI membranes can be a promising material as Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) applications.

Preparation and gas separation performance of thermally rearranged poly (benzoxazole-co-amide) (TR-PBOA) hollow fiber membranes deriving from polyamides

In acute assays at doses of 50 mg/kg body weight (b.w.), PEfAPSa and F6Sa showed a reduction in hyperglycemia in STID mice, at the first and fifth hour after of treatment, respectively, and were comparable with acarbose. In the sub-chronic test, PEfAPSa and F6Sa showed a reduction of glycemia since the first week, and the effect was greater than that of the acarbose control group. In relation to HbA1c, the treatments prevented the increase in HbA1c. In the case of TG and HDL, PEfAPSa and F6Sa showed a reduction in TG and an HDL increase from the second week. Effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on the uptake of tetrabromobisphenol A and its impact on the thyroid endocrine system in zebrafish larvae

The coexistence of nanoparticles and organic toxicants in the environment modifies pollutant bioavailability and toxicity. This study investigated the influence of silicon dioxide nanoparticles (n-SiO2) on the uptake of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its impact on the thyroid endocrine system in zebrafish larvae. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were exposed to TBBPA at different concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mu g/L) alone or in combination with n-SiO2 (25 mg/L) until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). Chemical measurements showed that both TBBPA and n-SiO2 were bioconcentrated in zebrafish larvae, and the uptake of TBBPA was enhanced by n-SiO2. Furthermore, zebrafish larvae exposed to 200 mu g/L TBBPA alone exhibited significantly increased T4 contents and decreased T3 contents, whereas n-SiO2 treatment alone did not have a detectable effect. Furthermore, the thyroid hormone levels changed more upon treatment with 200 mu g/L TBBPA combined with 25 mg/L n-SiO2 than upon TBBPA treatment alone. Alterations in gene transcription along the related hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis were observed, and expression of the binding and transport protein transthyretin (TTR) was significantly decreased for both TBBPA alone and co-exposure with n-SiO2. Thus, the current study demonstrates that n-SiO2, even at the nontoxic concentrations, increases thyroid hormone disruption in zebrafish larvae co-exposed to TBBPA by promoting its bioaccumulation and bioavailability.

Solvent uptake has a major impact on the ionic conductivity of these blend membranes, which was further elucidated by analysis of cation coordination and transport from atomistic molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to gain insight into lithium ion transport. Moreover, the thermal behavior of the novel single ion conducting polymer was investigated before and after lithiation, showing thermal stabilization of the sulfonimide group and the increase of the glass transition temperature (T-g). Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed high mechanical strength of the blend membranes and the observations in lithium plating/stripping experiments in Li parallel to Li- and Cu parallel to Li cells implied excellent stability against lithium metal and the penetration by lithium deposits. In lithium iron phosphate (LFP)parallel to Li cells, the SIPE membranes exhibited excellent cycling stability and rate performance.

Pressurized extraction of high-quality blackberry (Rubus spp. Xavante cultivar) seed oils

This study reports the extraction of oil from organic blackberry (Rubus spp. Xavante cultivar) performed using supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)), compressed propane, pi-hexane and petroleum ether. The extractions with compressed propane showed higher extraction yield and extraction rate, when compared to those performed with scCO(2). All the oils obtained represent a rich source of unsaturated fatty acid (around 93 %) composed mainly by linoleic acid. Furthermore, the extraction using scCO(2 )resulted an oil with high total phenolic compounds (113.49 mg GAE 100 g(-1)) and antioxidant activity as given by the ABTS method (2701.74 mu mol TE 100 g(-1)). On the other hand, compressed propane showed a higher efficiency in extracting beta-carotene and the oil obtained with such solvent presented a higher thermal stability (224.70 degrees C), rather than the oil obtained with scCO(2) (198.83 degrees C). Determination and comparison of phospholipid profiles in eggs from seven different species using UHPLC-ESI-Triple TOF-MS

Egg yolk phospholipids from seven different species were purified (purity > 96%) using SPE columns, and subsequently the phospholipid profiles were identified and quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-triple time-of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Triple TOF-MS). Eight phospholipid classes and 87 molecular species were characterized. Principal component analysis showed that the molecular species and concentration of phospholipids in pigeon and hen egg yolks had a significant difference with other eggs. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that the phospholipid profiles of pigeon egg yolks were closest to hen egg yolks, followed by quail, duck, ostrich, emu and goose egg yolks. Different relative quantities of certain molecular species were different among egg yolk types; for instance, phosphatidylcholine (16:0/16:1) in goose egg yolks and phosphatidylethanolamine (16:0/18:3) in ostrich egg yolks. This study provides a basis for a better understanding of the phospholipid profiles of egg yolks, and better evaluation of the nutritional value of eggs.
