Rice husk, rich in silica and abundantly available as waste, is presently destroyed by burning, which creates environmental issues. Thus, it will be advantageous if this rice husk waste can be used for preparation of valuable products. One of the application is its use as silica source in the synthesis of zeolites like ZSM-5, which are silico-aluminates. Rice husk waste is available in wide range of particle sizes in agricultural farms. There is no study available in open literature on use of these wide particle ranges for its direct application. This paper is an attempt to use wide particle size rice husk, its effect on ZSM-5 synthesis and its physico-chemical properties. Further these prepared ZSM-5 catalyst was evaluated for benzylation of mesitylene reaction. The study found that, rice husk of 600 mu m particle size is optimum as far as ZSM-5 synthesis, its physicochemical properties and further its application in mesitylene benzylation reaction.

Human nails have been increasingly used as a biomarker for human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In the present study, the fingernails of e-waste-dismantling workers from Longtang town, Qingyuan city, rural residents from Shijiao town, Qingyuan city, and urban residents from Guangzhou city, respectively, were collected from South China to monitor the human burdens of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs in the nails of the e-waste-dismantling workers, and urban and rural residents were 412, 129, and 82.1 ng g(-1), respectively, and the median concentrations of Sigma(20)PCBs were 108, 8.4, and 22.1 ng g(-1), respectively. The levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the nails of e-waste-dismantling workers were significantly higher as compared to those for urban and rural residents (p< 0.05), implying the continuous and greater exposure to these chemicals in the e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209 (92-98%) was the major congener of PBDEs and CB 52 (26-51%) was the main congener of PCB in nail samples. However, no significant gender difference was observed for PBDE and PCB levels in nails from all three investigated areas, and no significant correlation was found between their levels and the age of the participants. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of CBs 95 and 132 indicated that the external sources (e.g.dust and/or air) were the primary sources for CBs 95 and 132 in human nails from the e-waste area, while the contribution from the internal sources (e.g.serum) could be in a small percentage. The results of this study indicate that human nails can be used as a proper indicator of human exposure to PCBs and PBDEs, and further studies are needed by a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the PCB and PBDE levels in the nails and serum and/or other internal tissues. A class of aryne precursors, that is, 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonates, has been developed through well-established synthetic routes, which allow the formation of arynes under relatively mild conditions. All the aryne precursors were obtained from phenols and 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle reagent with relatively low toxicity, and subjected to nucleophilic addition reactions, providing addition products in yields of 24 to 92%, and to cycloaddition reactions, affording cycloadducts in yields up to 80%. This work provides interesting insights into the mechanisms of aryne generation. In addition, 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl 4-chlorobenzenesulfonate was successfully employed in the total synthesis of (+/-)-aporphine.

Ammonia (NH3) electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) is an important reaction in direct NH3 fuel cells, NH3 electrolyzer, and NH3-based electrochemical sensors. However, its slow kinetics and structure-sensitive properties require specific electrocatalyst designs. In this study, Ir-decorated N nanocubes are developed as unique surface engineered model catalysts. For the first time, we find that a trace amount of Ir (less than 2%) could increase the AOR activity of N nanocubes by more than twice. Theoretical simulation results also illustrate that the surfacedecorated Ir could lower the energy barrier in the rate determining *NH formation step on N surfaces, thus increasing activity in accordance with experimental findings. Additionally, Ir and Ni(OH)(2)-decorated N nanocubes can significantly improve the durability. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface engineering in catalyst synthesis and pave the way of advanced electrocatalyst designs for ammonia oxidation and other catalytic reactions.

The synthesis and characterization of the room-temperature and solution-stable silylpalladium cations (PCy3)(2)Pd-SiR3+(C6F5)(4)B- (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2) and (Xantphos)Pd-SiR3+(BAr4f) (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2; Xant-phos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene; BAr4f = (3,5-(CF3)(2)C6H3)(4)B-) are reported. Spectroscopic and ligand addition experiments suggest that silylpalladium complexes of the type (PCy3) Pd-SiR3+ are three-coordinate and T-shaped. Addition of dialkyl ethers to both the PCy3 and Xantphos-based silylpalladium cations resulted in the cleavage of C(sp(3))-O bonds and the generation of cationic Pd-alkyl complexes. Mechanistically enabling is the ability of silylpalladium cations to behave as sources of both electrophilic silylium ions and nucleophilic LnPd(0).

Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

Toward a more rigorous inspection of food contact materials, the importance of sample preparation for nontarget screening should be addressed. Direct immersion-solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (DI-SPME-GC-MS) was optimized for nontarget screening of migrants in 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and 95% ethanol food simulants by response surface methodology (RSM) in the present study. Optimum conditions were DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber, no pH adjustment for 10% and 95% ethanol simulant but pH adjustment to 7 for 3% acetic acid simulant, no salt addition, 5 min preincubation, 55 min extraction at 70 degrees C, and 8 min desorption at 250 degrees C. In addition, 9.5 times dilution of 95% ethanol samples prior to extraction was required. pH modification of 3% acetic acid samples was found to be critical for the extraction of amines. The proposed methodology was then evaluated by determining the limit of detection (LOD) as well as repeatability of 35 food contact materials-related substances. Except for those amines and diols which have a relatively high LOD, the LODs of the rest of the substances were 0.1-14.1 mu g/kg with a precision of 1.9-23.0% in 10% ethanol and were 0.1-20.2 mu g/kg with a precision of 2.5-19.6% in 3% acetic acid simulant. The LOD and precision in 95% ethanol simulant were 0.7-163.7 mu g/kg and 1.4-26.8%, respectively. The proposed method can be applied for an overall screening of migrants from these three simulants at even trace levels, though attention should be paid to some specific analytes, e.g., diols and amines, which could have a high LOD and toxicity.

The lack of Nationally Certified Reference Materials for the calibration of DSC equipment in the sub-ambient range has been addressed by the introduction of a Certified Reference Material of purified cyclohexane by the National Metrology Institute of Japan. We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.
