A hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with an adjustable mesoporous size is required for many chemical processes including the biorefining of big biomass compounds. In this research, a simple and high-efficiency hard template method has been successfully developed by adopting carbon nanoparticles obtained from carbonation of polyethylene oxide and urea. The abundant -C-O-C- groups on the surface of carbon nanoparticles provide the high hydrophilicity (from -C-O-C- to -C-O-H) in the alkaline synthetic gel solution, which promotes the synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite and the aluminum condensation in the silica framework to improve the Bronsted acidity. The as-synthesized hierarchical zeolites exhibited two sets of channel systems: micropores (similar to 0.55 nm) are from the MFI framework network, and mesopores (similar to 12.5 and similar to 34.5 nm) result from carbon nanoparticles of 10-40 nm in size, respectively. The hierarchical ZSM-5 with minimized extraframework aluminum species showed catalytic performance with high ethanol conversion (100%) and high stability (lifetime above 30 h) in the ethanol to olefins conversion. Importantly, the diffusion efficiency in ZSM-5 with mesoporous size was remarkably improved, compared to the catalyst with mesoporous size similar to 12.5 nm. As the benzylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol, the ZSM-5 (similar to 34.5 nm) sample showed the highest conversion in benzyl alcohol (82.0%) and selectivity in 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (74.3%).

Deep debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by visible light photocatalysis is still a challenge in the field of halogenated pollutants control. Here, an efficient photocatalyst (Pd/g-C3N4) was prepared by a simple impregnation-chemical reduction method with bulk g-C3N4 and PdCl2 as precursors. Under preferred reaction conditions (visible light irradiation for 120 min), the use of the 0.5% Pd/g-C3N4 composites (0.4 g L-1) yielded an almost complete debromination of BDE47 (10 mu mol L-1) in methanol-water mixture, while the debromination of BDE47 did not occur on pure g-C3N4. A Pd-promoted active H atom species attack and C-Br bond cleavage route was proposed according to the identified degradation intermediates. A catalytic mechanism was further clarified: Pd nanoparticles exerted affinity interaction with bromine atoms, and the storing of electrons on Pd would increase the binding interaction. In the debromination process, methanol acts as both a hole scavenger and a hydrogen donor to provide active H atom species through the reaction of H+ and photogenerated electrons on Pd nanoparticles. The initiation of BDE47 debromination on Pd nanoparticles required an induction period to enrich a critical amount of electrons for stretching the C-Br bond and its subsequent being attacked by active H atoms. The generated 2,2′-dibromodiphenyl ether (BDE4) would be further reduced to bromine-free products by hydro-debromination process or coupling reaction.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and unsubstituted/methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs/Me-PAHs) were simultaneously monitored in the air samples collected from Vietnamese urban and vehicular waste processing areas by using polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling (PUF-PAS) method. Concentrations (pg m(-3)) of organic pollutants decreased in the order: PAHs (median 29,000; range 5100-100,000) > Me-PAHs (6000; 1000-33,000) > PCBs (480; 170 -1100) > PBDEs (11; 5.3-86) > NBFRs (0.20; n. d. – 51) > BB-153 (n.d.). The difference in total PCB and PBDE concentrations between the urban and waste processing air samples was not statistically significant. Meanwhile, levels of PAHs, Me-PAHs, benzo [a]pyrene equivalents (BaP-EQs), and toxic equivalents of dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-TEQs) were much higher in the waste processing sites. This is the first report on the abundance of mono- and di-CBs (notably CB-11) in the air from a developing country, suggesting their roles as emerging and ubiquitous air pollutants. Our results have indicated potential sources of specific organic pollutants such as dioxin-like PCBs, PAHs, and Me-PAHs from improper treatment of end-of-life vehicles and other vehicle related materials (e.g., waste oils and rubber tires), as well as current emission of PCBs and PBDEs in the urban area in Vietnam. Further atmospheric monitoring studies should be conducted in this developing country that cover both legacy and emerging contaminants with a focus on areas affected by rapid urbanization and informal waste processing activities. In this work it is shown a precise way to optimize the heat generation in high viscosity magnetic colloids, by adjusting the Neel relaxation time in core/shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, for magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) applications. To pursue this goal, Fe3O4/ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized with 8.5 nm mean core diameter, encapsulated in a shell of similar to 1.1 nm of thickness, where the Zn atomic ratio (Zn/(Zn + Co) at%) changes from 33 to 68 at%. The magnetic measurements are consistent with a rigid interface coupling between the core and shell phases, where the effective magnetic anisotropy systematically decreases when the Zn concentration increases, without a significant change of the saturation magnetization. Experiments of MFH of 0.1 wt% of these particles dispersed in water, in Dulbecco modified Eagles minimal essential medium, and a high viscosity butter oil, result in a large specific loss power (SLP), up to 150 W g(-1), when the experiments are performed at 571 kHz and 200 Oe. The SLP was optimized adjusting the shell composition, showing a maximum for intermediate Zn concentration. This study shows a way to maximize the heat generation in viscous media like cytosol, for those biomedical applications that require smaller particle sizes.

The synthesis of aryl amines via the formation of a C-N bond is an essential tool for the preparation of functional materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients and bioactive products. Usually, this chemical connection is only possible by transition metal-catalyzed reactions, photochemistry or electrochemistry. Here, we report a metal-free arene C-H amination using hydroxylamine derivatives under benign conditions. A charge transfer interaction between the aminating reagents TsONHR and the arene substrates enables the chemoselective amination of the arene, even in the presence of various functional groups. Oxygen was crucial for an effective conversion and its accelerating role for the electron transfer step was proven experimentally. In addition, this was rationalized by a theoretical study which indicated the involvement of a dioxygen-bridged complex with a Sandwich-like arrangement of the aromatic starting materials and the aminating agents at the dioxygen molecule.

A silver(i)-mediated oxidative N-H/C(sp(3))-H coupling of NH-azoles with ethers has been developed. Various substrates were well N-alkylated in this methodology and the corresponding desired products were given in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the late-stage alkylation of bioactive molecules was achieved. This protocol involved C(sp(3))-N bond formation via a radical pathway generated in the presence of low cost and readily available heptafluoroisopropyl iodide (i-C3F7I). Generally, this reaction features excellent functional group compatibility, broad substrate scope, good regioselectivity, and fast access to pharmaceuticals such as SQ 22536.

A template free synthesis route was developed for the synthesis of hierarchical zeolite Beta from a natural layered aluminosilicate mineral kaolin. Detailed study on the crystallization of zeolite Beta established the optimized synthesis condition, and the synthesized hierarchical Beta zeolite was fully studied by XRD, IR, SEM, TEM, BET, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and NMR techniques. The characterization results reveal that the hierarchical Beta zeolite possesses good crystallinity, bimodal pore architecture, large surface area, big pore volume, high acid site concentration and excellent hydrothermal stability. An improved catalytic performance was achieved in hierarchical Beta zeolite for the esterification of acetic acid with benzyl alcohol, and the high activity and selectivity in this zeolite are mainly attributed to the presence of mesopores for accelerating the intraparticle diffusion rate of both reactant and product. This novel synthesis methodology provides a low-cost and environmentally-benign way for the preparation of hierarchical Beta zeolite, which could serve a sustainable platform of large-scale production of hierarchical zeolite for practical application.

Ionic liquids have demonstrated to be promising solvents for processing coal and biomass. Aiming to exploit ionic liquids (ILs) as media for degradation of coal, diphenylmethane (DPM), diphenyl ether (DPE), and diphenyl ketone (DPK) were used as coal-related compounds to study the degradation behaviors of weak-bond structures of coal in ionic liquids in this work. It was found that 1-sulfonic acid butyl-3-methylimidazolium 14 trifluoromethanesulfonate ([B(SO3H)mim]OTf), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim]Ac) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim] Cl) have a significant effect on the thermal dissociation of the model compounds. [B(SO3H) mim] OTf has a significant effect on the cleavage of DPM and DPK. [Bmim] Cl promotes the cleavage of the DPE. The dissociation effect of the model compound under the action of ionic liquid increases with the increase of reaction temperature. The interaction between the oxygen-containing functional groups in the model compound promotes the respective thermal dissociation of the model compounds. Ionic liquids promote the dissociation interaction of bridge bonds in model compounds. Under the action of ionic liquids, the carbonyl bond promotes the cleavage of the methylene and ether bond cleavage, and the ether bond promotes the methylene bond cleavage.

A novel ferrierite type zeolite named as IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) with pore sizes of 14 x 12-ring (R) was post synthesized by simply interlayer silylation of lamellar precursor Al-PLS-3 taking 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclosilone (TMCS) as silane. Its catalytic properties were tested by isomerization/disproportionation of m-xylene, alkylation/acylation of anisole with benzyl alcohol/acetic anhydride. The catalytic performance of IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) was compared with Al-PLS-3 (10 x 8-R) and IEZ-Al-PLS-3(1Si) (12 x 10-R) which were prepared by calcination or silylation using dimethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) as silane of as made Al-PLS-3 respectively. Since these materials have the same laminates composition, the differences of catalytic performance can be considered as the result of different pore sizes. We also prepared conventional 10-R zeolite ZSM-5 and 12-R zeolite Beta for control experiments. IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) showed even higher catalytic activities than Beta as a result of its enlarged 14-R pore size.

The vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) facilitates the uptake of glutamate (Glu) into neuronal vesicles. VGLUT has not yet been fully characterized pharmacologically but a body of work established that certain azo-dyes bearing two Glu isosteres via a linker were potent inhibitors. However, the distance between the isostere groups that convey potent inhibition has not been delineated. This report describes the synthesis and pharmacologic assessment of Congo Red analogs that contain one or two glutamate isostere or mimic groups; the latter varied in the interatomic distance and spacer properties to probe strategic binding interactions within VGLUT. The more potent inhibitors had two glutamate isosteres symmetrically linked to a central aromatic group and showed IC50 values similar to 0.3-2.0 mu M at VGLUT. These compounds contained phenyl, diphenyl ether (PhOPh) or 1,2-diphenylethane as the linker connecting 4-aminonaphthalene sulfonic acid groups. A homology model for VGLUT2 using d-galactonate transporter (DgoT) to dock and identify R88, H199 and F219 as key protein interactions with Trypan Blue, Congo Red and selected potent analogs prepared and tested in this report.
