A trifluoroacetic-acid-mediated desulfurilative sulfonylthiolation of arenes using SS-morpholino dithiosulfonate is described. This system is based on selective activation of the morpholino group over the tosyl group of the doubly transformable sulfur surrogate. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeds through electrophilic aromatic substitution followed by sulfur extrusion. The wide substrate scope of this reaction and the transformability of the resulting thiosulfonates enable expeditious access to divergent multifunctionalized sulfides.

This work deals with the synthesis of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in different solvents and their structural characterization for better understanding the oxygen donor solvent/zirconium precursor/NPs structure relationships. By selecting solvents over their capacity to produce different crystalline states from alkalinized zirconium alkoxide, spherical nanoparticles with a size of about 1.3-3 nm and a narrow size distribution were elaborated using a nonaqueous solvothermal sol-gel route. Conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the average structure and crystallite size of the nanoparticles. Well-crystallized and single-phased nanoparticles with average monoclinic and tetragonal structure were obtained with benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, respectively, and a much distorted structure was observed for the synthesis in anisole. The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) of the samples were also analyzed to access the local structure of the nanoparticles. The PDF of the benzaldehyde-prepared sample is consistent with the monoclinic structure. However, the local structure of nanoparticles synthesized with benzyl alcohol does not fully conform to the tetragonal structure observed by XRD, but exhibits monoclinic-like distortions. Lastly, the anisole-prepared nanoparticles present large structural distortions at the medium range and monoclinic local structural features. The restructuring of this last sample was studied by post-treatments in different solvents and leads to the expression of the tetragonal polymorph. Moreover, it seems that the main structural features are obtained in the early stages of the nanoparticles’ formation.

Phenol and its derivatives, which naturally occur in lignocellulose, can be considered as a renewable feedstock not only for aromatic, but also for alicyclic compounds, such as primary and N-substituted cyclohexylamines. So far, the latter are mostly produced from non-renewable starting materials like benzene via problematic nitration/reduction or cross-coupling routes. Herein, an efficient reductive amination of phenol with ammonia or amines is demonstrated, for the first time without the need for rare and expensive noble metals and without using any additives. Various supported Ni catalysts were screened and we elucidated the influence of the key parameters, including the acid-base properties of the supporting material. Acquired knowledge was then applied to different phenol-ammonia/amine combinations, resulting in the synthesis of various primary, secondary and tertiary cyclohexylamines in fair to very high yields.

Application In Synthesis of Benzyl ether. I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Linker-assisted structuration of tunable uranium-based hybrid lamellar nanomaterials published in 2020, Reprint Addresses Maynadie, J (corresponding author), Univ Montpellier, CEA, ENSCM, CNRS,ICSM, Marcoule, France.. The CAS is 103-50-4. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Benzyl ether.

Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

A novel halogen- and phosphorus-free intrinsic flame-retardant foam is fabricated from curable phenol-terminated polyphenylene ether resin with a high molecular weight using phenol, formaldehyde, and diphenyl ether as starting materials. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the pure foam is 24.90% +/- 0.28. When 0.5 wt % silica sol is added, the LOI of the foam (SPF-0.5) is up to 28.5% +/- 0.15 and both the combustion heat release rate and total combustion heat are low. Moreover, the SPF-0.5 foam exhibits high carbon residue, high compressive strength, and low pulverization rate and is superior to some previously reported phenolic foam. The flame-retardant mechanism includes the condensed-phase flame retardation and the gas-phase flame retardation, with the former being the main step, which is based on the high cross-linking density, the higher strength and smaller size of foam cells, and the formation of a carbon-silicon compound in the foam. This halogen- and phosphorous-free flame-retardant foam is also environmentally benign.

Novel small molecule compounds based on various scaffolds including chalcone, flavonoid, and resorcinol dibenzyl ether were designed and tested for their inhibitory activity against the Programmed Cell Death-1/Programmed Cell Death-Ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) pathway. Among them, compound NP19 inhibited the human PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with IC50 values of 12.5 nM in homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) binding assays. In addition, NP19 dose-dependently elevated IFN-gamma production in a coculture model of Hep3B/OS-8/hPD-L1 and CD3 T cells. Furthermore, NP19 displayed significant in vivo antitumor efficacy in two different mouse models of cancer (a melanoma B16-F10 tumor model and an H22 hepatoma tumor model). Moreover, H&E staining and flow cytometry data suggested that NP19 activated the immune microenvironment in the tumor, which may contribute to its antitumor effects. This work shows NP19 is a promising lead compound for further development as a new generation of small molecule inhibitors targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway.

Raising the open circuit voltage (V-oc) of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices is one of the key parameters to enhance performance and increase utility. We report an active layer composed of a quinoxaline-based donor polymer and an N-annulated perylene diimide (PDI) dimer which are stable and readily scaled materials and as blended solutions can be processed into films using non-halogenated solvents and slot-die coating methods. OPV devices with a highV(oc)exceeding 1.2 V were obtained under one sun illumination. Furthermore, the practical application of indoor light recycling is demonstrated, reporting a high deviceV(oc)of 1.1 V under LED illumination. Modification of the cathode interlayer or addition of a third component using perylene diimide (PDI) based materials is shown to further enhance deviceV(oc)under all operating conditions.

Due to their ubiquity in nature and frequent use in organic electronic materials, benzothiophenes are highly sought after. Here we set out an unprecedented procedure for the formation of benzothiophenes by the twofold vicinal C-H functionalization of arenes that does not require metal catalysis. This one-pot annulation proceeds through an interrupted Pummerer reaction/[3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement/cyclization sequence to deliver various benzothiophene products. The procedure is particularly effective for the rapid synthesis of benzothiophenes from non-prefunctionalized polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

High molecular weight bioresorbable polyglactin was successfully synthesized by direct esterification of glycolic acid and lactic acid in diphenylether under vacuum. The reaction mixture was initially dehydrated at 120 degrees C, diphenylether and catalysts were added when the temperature was raised to 180 degrees C, meanwhile the reaction mixture was kept dehydrated azeotropically for several hours. Diphenylether was removed from reaction mixture using vacuum and white solid polyglactin was obtained after purification. The intrinsic viscosity of polyglactin was in a range of 0.6 to 1.10 dl/g. This synthesis process can be an economical alternative to the conventional synthesis of polyglactin.
