A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrorheological/magnetorheological fluid consisting of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite dispersed in silicone oil with a particle concentration of 5 vol % is fabricated. Its rheological characteristics under external electric and magnetic fields are investigated by using a rotational rheometer. Under the electric or magnetic field, the PANI/zinc-ferrite particles form chain-like structures, demonstrating a solid-like state.

We report on the shape, composition (from Pt95Zn5 to Pt77Zn23), and surface chemistry of Pt-Zn nanoparticles obtained by reduction of precursors M2+(acac) (-)(2) (M2+: Pt2+ and Zn2+) in oleylamine, which serves as both solvent and ligand. We show first that the addition of phenyl ether or benzyl ether determines the composition and shape of the nanoparticles, which point to an adsorbate-controlled synthesis. The organic (ligand)/inorganic (nanoparticles) interface is characterized on the structural and chemical level. We observe that the particles, after washing with ethanol, are coated with oleylamine and the oxidation products of the latter, namely, an aldimine and a nitrile. After exposure to air, the particles oxidize, covering themselves with a few monolayer thick ZnO film, which is certainly discontinuous when the particles are low in zinc. Pt-Zn particles are unstable and prone to losing Zn. We have strong indications that the driving force is the preferential oxidation of the less noble metal. Finally, we show that adsorption of CO on the surface of nanoparticles modifies the oxidation state of amine ligands and attribute it to the displacement of hydrogen adsorbed on Pt. All the structural and chemical information provided by the combination of electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allows us to give a fairly accurate picture of the surface of nanoparticles and to better understand why Pt-Zn alloys are efficient in certain electrocatalytic reactions such as the oxidation of methanol.

High efficiencies of organic solar cells (OSCs) are generally achieved for small-area devices processed from halogenated solvents, which are hazardous to human health and pollute the environment. Commercialization of OSCs requires the development of novel photovoltaic materials, which are suitable for large-scale fabrication of devices through printable techniques using environmentally-friendly solvents. In this work, we report the synthesis of two novel polymers comprising thiazolothiazole, benzothiadiazole (P1), and benzoxadiazole (P2) moieties and the fabrication of polymer-fullerene OSCs and photovoltaic modules by blade coating under ambient conditions. The P1-based solar cells and larger area modules showed tolerance to processing solvents and delivered encouraging efficiencies illustrating polymer P1 as a promising material for environment friendly large-area photovoltaics. This work reports a new approach of synthesis of FePt nanoparticles in aqueous medium using cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as a capping agent and the influence of change of its concentration on the size of the particles. Tuning of magnetic properties has also been done by changing the CTAB concentrations. Here at higher CTAB concentration, particles formed are of smaller size compared to the size prepared in lower micellar concentration. The ordering parameter of the particles after annealing at 550 degrees C with the variation of particle size is also studied. The magnetic properties of these particles are studied and the effect of particle phase and size on magnetic property is also investigated. The particles are prepared in aqueous medium because water soluble particles are useful for hyperthermia therapy. Heating abilities of the particles under AC magnetic field are also checked with change in their size. The studies on interaction of particles with cancer cell line was also performed with probing the cell by fluorescence imaging technique after bio-functionalization of the particles by sodium oleate and fluorescent dye rhodamine-B-isothiocyanate (RITC). All these preliminary studies indicate a promising applicability of the particles for localized cancer treatment by magnetic field induced hyperthermia therapy.

In the present study, we report the synthesis of a series of copper(II) complexes with a wide range of ligands and their testing in the copper catalyzed Chan-Evans-Lam (CEL) coupling of aniline and phenylboronic acid. The efficiency of the coupling was directly connected with the ease of the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) of the complexes. The most efficient catalyst was derived from 4-t-butyl-2,5-bis[(quinolinylimino)methyl]phenolate and two Cu(II) ions. Depending on the counter-anion nature and the concentration of the reaction mixture, the reaction can be directed to predominant C-N-bond formation. Forty-three derivatives of diphenylamine were prepared under the optimized conditions. The proposed mechanism of the catalysis was based on the reduction potential of a series of complexes, molecular weight measurements of the catalytic complex in MeOH and the kinetic studies of aniline and phenylboronic acid coupling. In addition, an H-1 NMR experiment in a sealed NMR tube, without external oxygen supply available, proved that no complete Cu(II) to Cu(I) conversion was observed under the condition, ruling out the usually accepted mechanism of the C-N coupling, which included the oxygenation of the intermediately formed Cu(I) complexes after the key step of C-N conversion had already been completed. Instead, a mechanism was proposed, involving an oxygen molecule coordinated to two copper ions in the key C-N bond formation without any detectable conversion of the Cu(II) complexes to Cu(I).

A novel Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of arenes to access valuable 1-fluoroalkyl-1,1-biaryl compounds is established under mild conditions. The key to success is the efficient generation of a destabilized benzylic carbocation intermediate via two consecutive single-electron transfer processes by virtue of visible-light photoredox catalysis. This unique activation pattern avoids using strong Lewis acids and high temperatures that are required for generation of destabilized carbocations in traditional Friedel-Crafts reactions. This protocol demonstrates the first example of photoredox-catalyzed heterolysis of electronically deactivated benzylic C-Br bonds for the formation of destabilized carbocation intermediates.

Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic investigations of a new responsive-at-metal cyclometalated platinum(II) complex. With mild chemical oxidants and reductants, it was possible to obtain the same complex in three different oxidation states and each of these complexes was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We discovered that the platinum(II) complex displays strong solvatochromism in the solid state, which can be attributed to modulation of Pt…Pt interactions that results in switching between optical and photoluminescent states. Incorporating responsive-at-metal species as dynamic components in nanostructured materials might facilitate response amplification, sensing, actuation, or self-healing processes.

Modulating the hostile tumor microenvironment (TME) rather than directly killing cancer cells may be an effective strategy to improve the therapeutic benefits in cancer treatment. Herein, FeWO(X)nanosheets are constructed as cascade bioreactors to modulate the TME and enhance radiotherapy and immunotherapy of tumors. Synthesized by the thermal-decomposition method and modified by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), the obtained FeWOX-PEG with multivalent metal elements (Fe2+/3+, W5+/6+) exhibit efficient catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) for chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT). The generated high valence of metal ions (Fe3+/W6+) in FeWOX-PEG are reduced by endogenous glutathione (GSH), both leading to depletion of GSH and further amplified oxidative stress, and resulting in the reduced metal valence statuses (Fe2+/W5+) enabling cascade bioreactions. Such FeWOX-PEG bioreactors enhance the oxidative stress in the tumor and interact with X-rays, significantly improving cancer radiotherapy (RT). Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced inflammation caused by FeWOX-PEG in TME activates the immune system and promotes the tumor-infiltration of various types of immune cells, which working together with cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) checkpoint blockade could elicits a robust immune response to defeat tumors.
