Nanoparticles layered with palladium(0) were prepared from nano-sized magnetic Fe3O4 by coating it with silica and then reacting sequentially with phenylselenyl chloride under an N-2 atmosphere and palladium(ii) chloride in water. The resulting Fe3O4@SiO2@SePh@Pd(0) NPs are magnetically retrievable and the first example of NPs in which the outermost layer of Pd(0) is mainly held by selenium. The weight percentage of Pd in the NPs was found to be 1.96 by ICP-AES. The NPs were authenticated via TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, and powder XRD and found to be efficient as catalysts for the C-O and C-C (Suzuki-Miyaura) coupling reactions of ArBr/Cl in water. The oxidation state of Pd in the NPs having size distribution from similar to 12 to 18 nm was inferred as zero by XPS. They can be recycled more than seven times. The main features of the proposed protocols are their mild reaction conditions, simplicity, and efficiency as the catalyst can be separated easily from the reaction mixture by an external magnet and reused for a new reaction cycle. The optimum loading (in mol% of Pd) was found to be 0.1-1.0 and 0.01-1.0 for O-arylation and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, respectively. For ArCl, the required amount of NPs was more as compared to that needed for ArBr. The nature of catalysis is largely heterogeneous.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure and two different morphologies (nanospheres and nanoprisms) were synthesized by a facile one-step method. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanospheres and nanoprisms were monocrystalline and separable in a magnetic field. In different volume ratios of oleylamine (OAm) to dibenzyl ether, the sizes of the prepared Fe3O4 NPs ranged from 5 to 21 nm. The OAm amount in the synthesis can significantly control the morphology of Fe3O4 NPs. As the OAm content increased from 10 ml to 30 ml, the faceted nanoprisms shrank while the nanospheres enlarged. At an OAm content of 25 ml, the nanoprisms diminished while more hexagonal and sphere-like particles appeared, implying a critical point of morphology transition from triangle to hexagon. The magnetic properties also depended on the NP morphology and size. The prepared Fe3O4 NPs are promising candidates in medical applications such as magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery, blood purification, and tumor hyperthermia.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic investigations of a new responsive-at-metal cyclometalated platinum(II) complex. With mild chemical oxidants and reductants, it was possible to obtain the same complex in three different oxidation states and each of these complexes was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We discovered that the platinum(II) complex displays strong solvatochromism in the solid state, which can be attributed to modulation of Pt…Pt interactions that results in switching between optical and photoluminescent states. Incorporating responsive-at-metal species as dynamic components in nanostructured materials might facilitate response amplification, sensing, actuation, or self-healing processes.

Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) is one of the most studied and established materials for transparent electrode applications. However, the syntheses for FTO nanocrystals are currently very limited, especially for stable and well-dispersed colloids. Here, we present the synthesis and detailed characterization of FTO nanocrystals using a colloidal heat-up reaction. High-quality SnO2 quantum dots are synthesized with a tuneable fluorine amount up to similar to 10% atomic, and their structural, morphological and optical properties are fully characterized. These colloids show composition-dependent optical properties, including the rise of a dopant-induced surface plasmon resonance in the near infrared.

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

Various optical clearing methods have emerged as powerful tools for deep biological imaging. Organic solvent-based clearing methods, such as three-dimensional imaging of solvent-cleared organs (3DISCO), present the advantages of high clearing efficiency and size reduction for panoptic imaging of large samples such as whole organs and even whole bodies. However, 3DISCO results in a rapid quenching of endogenous fluorescence, which has impeded its application. Here, we propose an advanced method named FDISCO to overcome this limitation. FDISCO can effectively preserve the fluorescence of various fluorescent probes and can achieve a long storage time of months while retaining potent clearing capability. We used FDISCO for high-resolution imaging and reconstruction of neuronal and vascular networks. Moreover, FDISCO is compatible with labeling by multiple viruses and enables fine visualization of neurons with weak fluorescence labeling in the whole brain. FDISCO represents an effective alternative to the three-dimensional mapping of whole organs and can be extensively used in biomedical studies.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) and dechlorane plus (DP) were measured in sediments collected from three mangrove wetlands of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in South China. This study aims to investigate the distribution of these halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and the correlations between HFRs and microbial community structure in mangrove sediments. Concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, TBBPA, HBCDD and DP in mangrove sediments ranged from 6.97 to 216.1, 3.70-26.0, 0.02-0.73, 0.02-37.5, 0.44-127.5 and 0.07-2.23 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Higher levels of PBDEs, BTBPE, HBCDD and DP were observed in sediments from Futian mangrove wetland of Shenzhen, the only nature reserve located in the downtown of China. The highest concentration of TBBPA found in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou was proximate to a ferry terminal and a dockyard where TBBPA is widely used in the coatings. PBDEs were the predominant HFRs in mangrove sediments, with an average contribution of 63.0%. Mangrove sediments from Guangzhou and Zhuhai showed an enrichment of (-)-alpha-HBCDD, (-)-beta-HBCDD and (-)-gamma-HBCDD. Concentrations of HFRs in mangrove sediments from Guangzhou increased significantly from 2012 to 2015, which was probably due to the establishment and rapid development of Nansha Free Trade Zone of Guangzhou. Redundancy analysis showed that HFRs may cause a shift of microbial community structure in mangrove sediments and the variations were significantly correlated with TBBPA, syn-DP and BTBPE. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was employed to oxidize coal sample at 60 degrees C, and the effect of reaction time on coal conversion and oxidation products was studied. The results showed that H2O2 is able to break bridge bonds and side chains connected to aromatic clusters, while Car-Car bonds of arene keep unchanged at same conditions. After 10 h oxidation, the coal conversion is 83.4 wt% and the aromaticity of oxidation residue is 7.43%, indicating most of aromatics have transferred to WSPs. The aromatic ring distribution in WSP can reflect that of NMH coal to some extent, where 1ring, 2-ring and 3-ring compounds account for 58.4 mol%, 19.9 mol% and 21.7 mol%, respectively. Moreover, the pyrolysis of NMH coal and oxidation residue was conducted on an online pyrolysis-vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry, and the oxidation of several typical model compounds was also carried out to understand the oxidation mechanism. The results showed that the PhO-RPh bonds between aromatic clusters are most easily destroyed by H2O2. H2O2 oxidation degradation of coal are accompanied by generation of alkenes and decarboxylic reaction.
