Large area processing of organic photovoltaic cells and modules is a key step towards commercialization. At the same time, the scale-up of fabrication entails careful evaluation and selection of solvents, and optimization of processing parameters. It has been proven that using proper processing additives in polymer:PCBM bulk-heterojunction solution is one of the most effective strategies to improve the performance of organic photovoltaic cells. Here we report a new transition solvent strategy of using non-halogenated solvents to fabricate PDTSTPD: PC71BM based active layers. This strategy uses a combination of miscible good main solvent such as 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and coadditives such as diphenyl ether (DPE) and 1-methylnaphtalene (MeN) for middle molecular weight PDTSTPD, or 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and MeN for high molecular weight PDTSTPD to tune the nano-scale morphology of the active layer during the film drying process. Inverted organic photovoltaic cells with an active area of 1cm(2) on PET substrate fabricated by a blade coating process using the formulated ink have demonstrated a power conversion efficiency up to 5 %.

A simple method for the synthesis of nano crystalline ZSM-5 and Beta zeolites with trimodal porosity was developed using starch coated silica nanospheres (as silica precursor) for generating interparticle porosity (50-200 nm); propyltriethoxysilane was used as an additive for generating intercrystalline mesopores (2-50 nm) in the presence of microporous zeolite porogen. Loading of starch and propyltriethoxysilane additive played a pivotal role in obtaining trimodal porosity with very small size zeolite nanoparticles having high surface area and pore volume. The possible growth mechanism for the fabrication of trimodal porous zeolite is presented. The resultant zeolite demonstrated excellent acidity and activity in the liquid phase acid catalyzed reactions such as esterification of hexanoic/oleic acid with benzyl alcohol, condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation followed by ring closure reaction for the synthesis of vitamin E when compared to conventional zeolite with excellent recyclability. Such an economical starch mediated synthesis strategy can be extended to other zeolite frameworks and similar heterogeneous catalytic materials.

Recommanded Product: Diphenyl oxide. I found the field of Environmental Sciences & Ecology very interesting. Saw the article Debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by palladized zerovalent zinc particles: Influence factors, pathways and mechanism published in 2020.0, Reprint Addresses Zhang, TP; Lu, GN (corresponding author), South China Univ Technol, Sch Environm & Energy, Guangzhou 510006, Peoples R China.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Diphenyl oxide.

We synthesized a novel material, namely palladized zero-valent zinc (Pd/ZVZ), and investigated its efficiency for the degradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The plated Pd significantly enhances the degradation rate of PBDEs by ZVZ at the optimum loading of 1% by weight. In the Pd/ZVZ system, very few lower BDEs were accumulated during the degradation of 2,2′,4,4′- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and the final product is diphenyl ether, whereas the ZVZ system only debrominates BDE-47 to di-BDE and further debromination becomes very difficult. The degradation rates of BDEs by ZVZ greatly decreased with decreased bromination level, while in Pd/ZVZ system, the degradation rates of PBDEs did not show a significant difference. These indicate different mechanisms. This was confirmed by investigating the debromination pathways of the PBDEs in both systems. We determined that a H-transfer was the dominant mechanism in the Pd/ZVZ system. In addition, the reactivity of Pd/ZVZ to BDE-47 is pH-independent, which has a great advantage for various applications over ZVZ alone. Our study provides a new approach for the remediation of the PBDEs pollution. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bimetallic Pt-based catalysts have been extensively investigated to enhance the performance of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) because CO, a by-product, reduces the activity of the pure Pt catalysts. Herein, we synthesized Pt-Pb hexagonal nanoplates as a model catalyst for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and further controlled the Pt and Pb distributions on the surface of the nanoplates through acetic acid (HAc) treatment. As a result, we obtained Pt-Pb nanoplates and HAc-treated Pt-Pb nanoplates with homogeneous and heterogeneous distributions of the Pt-Pb alloy surfaces, respectively. We showed that the MOR activity and stability of the Pt-Pb nanoplates improved compared to those of the HAc-treated Pt-Pb nanoplates, mainly due to the enhanced CO tolerance and the modified electronic structure of Pt under the influence of the oxophilic Pb. alpha-Diimine niobium complexes serve as catalysts for deoxygenation of benzyl ethers by silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) to cleanly give two equivalents of the corresponding benzyl chlorides, where SiCl4 has the dual function of oxygen scavenger and chloride source with the formation of a silyl ether or silica as the only byproduct. The reaction mechanism has two successive trans-etherification steps that are mediated by the niobium catalyst, first forming one equivalent of benzyl chloride along with the corresponding silyl ether intermediate that undergoes the same reaction pathway to give the second equivalent of benzyl chloride and silyl ether.

Benzyl alcohol is a versatile reaction medium for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Its ability to act as an oxygen source gave access to metal oxide nanoparticles, while its reducing properties can be harnessed for the preparation of metals. Here we report the synthesis of Pd and PdCu nanoparticles in benzyl alcohol supplemented by a detailed mechanistic study for both systems. To elucidate the chemical formation mechanism of the Pd nanoparticles, we performed in situ attenuated total reflection ultraviolet-visible (ATR-UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), providing information on the organic as well as on the inorganic side of the reaction. Potential gaseous products were analyzed by in situ gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). We observed the formation of benzaldehyde, toluene, and dibenzyl ether as the three main organic products. The formation of the PdCu alloy nanoparticles was studied by ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). A time-resolved study of the synthesis at 100 degrees C indicated that initially three types of particles formed, composed of an alloy with high Pd content, an alloy with high content of copper, and palladium particles, and only later in the reaction course they transformed into an alloy with a Pd-to-Cu ratio close to 1. Pb-210-dated sediment cores and surface sediments from Lake Chapala (LC), Mexico, were analyzed to assess the temporal trends in concentrations and fluxes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PAHs, PCBs and PBDEs). Total sediment concentrations of PAHs (95-1,482 ng g(-1)), PCBs (9-27 ng g(-1)) and PBDEs (0.2-2.5 ng g(-1)) were indicative of moderate to intense contamination. The POP concentrations have progressively increased since the 1990s. The light molecular weight PAHs, and the prevalence of PCB congeners with low-chlorination levels (e.g., di- to tri-CB) and low-to medium-brominated (tri- to penta-BDE) PBDEs in most sections of the sediment profiles, suggested that these POPs have most likely reached these sediments by long-range atmospheric transport from distant sources; although the significant presence of heavier PAH, PCB and PBDE congeners in the topmost sediments, indicate that other nearby and local sources (soil erosion from the catchment, urban and industrial wastewaters discharges, as well as navigation) might have also contributed to the recent input of POPs to LC. Taking into account the relevance of LC as regional freshwater supply and commercial fishing ground, the potential risk posed by the organic contaminated sediments to the biota and human population should not be underestimated.

Hydroformylation remains the most applied industrial process to produce aldehydes. Much research has been devoted to developing new catalyst systems since aldehydes are highly desired. Supported metal catalyst complexes have drawn renewed attention due to an increased interest in benign and environmental processes. In this paper, NiXantphos has been immobilized on hyperbranched poly(arylene oxindole) supports, different in linker, via a one-step postfunctionalization. Two heterogeneous hyperbranched poly(arylene oxindole) supported NiXantphos ligands were evaluated in the microwave-assisted rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins. After selection of the best reaction conditions, a variety of functionalized olefins were successfully converted into the desired linear aldehydes working under milder conditions compared to known processes, in terms of syngas pressure (4.8 bar), temperature (75 degrees C), and reaction times (20 min). The increased activity might emanate from a positive dendritic effect unique to the dendritic nature of the support. Furthermore, the catalyst system was successfully recovered and reused without a decrease in activity or regioselectivity, thus demonstrating to be a valid alternative to classical homogeneous procedures.

Jasmine is one of the most valuable commercial oil bearing plants from family Oleaceae used for the production of jasmine scent mostly in the form of concrete and absolute. Being an export commodity, development of reliable analytical methods for its jasmine species and derived products authentication and or adulterants detection should now follow. A comparative volatiles profiling of Jasminum grandiflorum L., J. multiflorum (Burm. f.) Andrews and J. sambac (L.) Aiton flowers in addition to J. grandiflorum products viz., concrete and absolute at different time periods was performed using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to GC/MS. A total of 77 volatiles were identified belonging to esters, alcohols, sesquiterpenes, ketones, aldehydes, phenols, hydrocarbons and nitrogenous compounds. The phenylpropanoid/benzenoid and terpenoid classes were the major volatile classes in jasmine. Benzyl acetate was the chief scent volatile whereas major terpenoids included linalool, nerolidol, alpha-farnesene and cis-jasmone. Results revealed aroma variation among different flowers and products obtained from J. grandiflorum at different months. This study provides the first comprehensive and comparative aroma profile for Egyptian Jasminum species along with its products that could be used for its future quality control in industry.
