Synthesis of size-controlled anisotropic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles allows designing next-generation magnetic nanosystems with predetermined magnetic properties suited for particular applications in the biomedical, information, and environment fields. In this work, we report a reproducible and economical approach for fabricating anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles via the thermal decomposition method. Controlling the reaction environment, i.e. the degassing pressure, is essential to obtain the reproducible synthesis of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles along with monodispersity in the size and shape. At low degassing pressure, Fe3O4 nanocubes are formed, and an increase in degassing pressure leads to the formation of Fe3O4 octahedral nanoparticles. To achieve good reproducibility (with respect to size and shape) between different batches, our finding reveals the importance of maintaing the same degassing pressure. The size of the anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be varied by changing the heating rate and the solvent amount. The amount of solvent has also an influence on the shape of the nanoparticles, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles of flower morphology are obtained at a high solvent amount. The work also provides new conceptual fundamental insights into understanding the growth mechanism of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and thus advancing the field of materials chemistry for rationally designing anisotropic nanoparticles with tunable magnetic properties.

Nano ferrites (AFe(2)O(4), A = Zn, Co, Mn, Cu) were supported on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 support by hydrothermal synthesis to prepare a series of novel composite catalysts (AFe(2)O(4)/gamma-Al2O3) for catalytic ozonation for elimination of high concentration toluene at ambient temperature. The characterization results showed that the high-purity nano-AFe(2)O(4) particles were uniformly loaded on mesoporous gamma-Al2O3. Further, it was confirmed that among the several catalysts prepared, the amount of oxygen vacancies (O-vs), Lewis acid sites (LAS), and BrOnsted acid sites (BAS) of the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst were the highest. This meant that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had a strong adsorption capacity for toluene and ozone (O-3), and had a strong catalytic activity. When the temperature was 293 K and the space velocity was 1500 h(-1), the mol ratio of O-3 to toluene was 6, the degradation rate of toluene (600 mg m(-3)) can reach an optimum of 99.8%. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier infrared (FT-IR) proved superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals by catalytic ozonation. Moreover, the GC-MS analysis results indicated that the toluene degradation began with the oxidation of methyl groups on the benzene ring, eventually producing CO2 and H2O. After repeated experiments, the toluene degradation rate remained stable, and the residual content of O-3 in each litre of produced gas was less than 1 mg L-1, thereby indicating that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had excellent reusability and showed great potential for the treatment of toluene waste gas.

Background: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are dangerous for the environment and human health because of their persistent organic pollutant (POP) characteristics, which have attracted extensive research attention. Raman spectroscopy is a simple highly sensitive detection operation. This study was performed to obtain environmentally friendly non-POP PBDE derivatives with simple detection-based molecular design and provide theoretical support for establishing enhanced Raman spectroscopic detection techniques. Methods: A three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3DQSAR) pharmacophore model of characteristic PBDE Raman spectral was established using 20 and 10 PBDEs as training and test sets, respectively. Full-factor experimental design was used to modify representative commercial PBDEs, and their flame retardancy and POP characteristics were evaluated. Results: The pharmacophore model (Hypol) exhibited good predictive ability with the largest correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.88, the smallest root mean square (RMS) value of 0.231, and total cost of 81.488 with a configuration value of 12.56 (<17).74 monosubstituted and disubstituted PBDE derivatives were obtained based on the Hypo 1 pharmacophore model and full-factor experimental design auxiliary. Twenty PBDE derivatives were screened, and their flame-retardant capabilities were enhanced and their migration and bio-concentration were reduced (log(K-OW) <5), with unchanged toxicity and high biodegradability. The Raman spectral intensities increased up to 380%. In addition, interference analysis of the Raman peaks by group frequency indicated that the 20 PBDE derivatives were easily detected with no interference in gaseous environments. Conclusion: Nine pharmacophore models were constructed in this study; Hypo 1 was the most accurate. Twenty PBDE derivatives showed Raman spectral intensities increased up to 380%; these were classified as new non-POP environmentally friendly flame retardants with low toxicity, low migration, good biodegradability, and low bio-concentrations. 2D QSAR analysis showed that the most positive Milliken charge and lowest occupied orbital energy were the main contributors to the PBDE Raman spectral intensities. Polycarbonate (PC) is an engineering thermoplastic that is widely used in electrical and electronic equipment. This plastic often contains tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA), the most common brominated flame retardant. Thermal degradation of the PC-TBBA leads to generation of numerous bromo-organic products in the pyrolytic oil, hindering its appropriate utilization, as well as corrosive hydrogen bromide gas. The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate and compare the pyrolysis products of PC-TBBA and PC-TBBA + Cu2O at various temperatures, with an emphasis on the yield and distribution of brominated compounds. In pyrolysis of PC-TBBA + Cu2O, at the maximum degradation temperature (600 degrees C), as much as 86% of total Br was trapped in the residue, while 3% and 11% were distributed in the condensate and gas fractions, respectively. In contrast, the distribution of Br from non-catalytic pyrolysis of PC-TBBA (600 degrees C) was 0.5% residue, 40% condensate, and 60% gas. The results of this study revealed that in the presence of Cu2O, organo-bromine products were most likely involved in Ullman-type coupling reactions, leading to early cross-linking of the polymer network that efficiently hinders their vaporization. HBr in the gas fraction was suppressed due to effective fixation of bromine in residue in the form of CuBr.

This paper studies the cooperative effect of Au nanoparticles deposited on vanadyl pyrophosphate oxide (VPO) in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol. VPO was prepared using the classical method by thermally treating VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O precursor in reacting atmosphere at 420 degrees C for a period of 72 h. Au nanoparticles were deposited by incipient wetness method. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, TEM, XPS and Raman. The bulk VPO catalyst contains vanadyl pyrophosphate phase ((VO)(2)P2O7), and a small amount of VOPO4. The catalytic system exhibits a high activity in the base-free liquid phase oxidation of alcohols compared to Au on activated carbon, classic catalyst used for this type of reaction. Au/VPO showed a high peculiar selectivity to benzyl benzoate (76%), an important product used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. This behavior might be ascribed to the presence of strong acid sites of VPO, as determined by liquid phase titration. Stability tests performed on Au/VPO showed a deactivation of 10% after the first run, but a constant conversion along the following five cycles. This phenomenon can be attributed to the increase of mean Au particle size (from 19.1 to 23.4 nm) after recycling tests as well as the partial leaching of Au and V in the reaction media. Moreover, XRD evidenced a modification in the VPO structure with the partial formation of VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O phase.

A magnetically robust recyclable nanocatalyst was fabricated by immobilizing of Pd onto the surface of cysteine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs@Cys-Pd). This nanocatalyst was characterized using various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, VSM, and ICP. The application of catalyst (MNPs@Cys-Pd) was investigated for O-arylation and N-arylation reactions. Research on the atmospheric occurrence of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in industrialized areas is scarce. In this study, we investigated the concentrations, profile, and spatial distribution of SCCPs in the highly industrialized and developed areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China using polyurethane foam passive air samplers. Sampling was performed during two separate periods in 2011. The concentrations of atmospheric SCCPs ranged from 6.1 to 63 ng m(-3) in summer and 6.2-42 ng m(-3) in winter. The C-10 and C-11 groups were the predominant carbon groups in all the samples. Different congener patterns between summer and winter were found, indicating that congeners in the air in winter may be influenced by local and external sources. The highest level of SCCPs was found in Suzhou, which is a highly industrialized area with many manufactories including electronic industries and plastic factories. Higher levels of SCCPs were found in the air than polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), suggesting that the production and use of SCCPs were much higher than prohibited or restricted persistent organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs). Future studies should investigate the different sources of atmospheric SCCPs by conducting a comprehensive assessment of SCCP exposure. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) methodology, proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece (WFD-MEEG), and the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) are comparatively applied to evaluate the chemical status of a major transboundary river. Water quality parameters were monitored at 11 sites along the main stream of the river and its main tributaries, and at five sites in the reservoirs, on a monthly frequency, in the period from May 2008 to May 2009. Water temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) were measured in-situ, while water samples were collected for the determination of total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrite-, nitrate- and ammonium-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphates (OP), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The water samples were also analyzed for the determination of seven heavy metals (i.e., Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn) and 33 priority substances, as listed in Annex II of EU Directive 2008/105/EC. The results showed that the physicochemical parameters (i.e., T. DO, pH, EC, inorganic nitrogen, MN, OP, TP, TSS, and Chia) were within the natural range. The mean concentration of the measured heavy metals did not exceed the limits set by WHO (2003, 2017) for drinking water. Regarding the priority substances, some of them ( i.e., anthracene, fluoranthene, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were measured in various stations at higher concentrations than the Annual Average Environmental Quality Standards (AA-EQS). Based on the WFD-MEEG methodology, the river water was in the ‘good’ quality class, while according to CCME-WQI the river quality ranged from ‘marginal’ to ‘good’ category. The combination of materials with different magnetic properties at the nanoscale can lead to phenomena such as exchange bias via coupling effects, which shows huge potential for applications, e.g., in storage media or magnetic sensors. Human nails have been increasingly used as a biomarker for human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In the present study, the fingernails of e-waste-dismantling workers from Longtang town, Qingyuan city, rural residents from Shijiao town, Qingyuan city, and urban residents from Guangzhou city, respectively, were collected from South China to monitor the human burdens of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). The median concentrations of Sigma PBDEs in the nails of the e-waste-dismantling workers, and urban and rural residents were 412, 129, and 82.1 ng g(-1), respectively, and the median concentrations of Sigma(20)PCBs were 108, 8.4, and 22.1 ng g(-1), respectively. The levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the nails of e-waste-dismantling workers were significantly higher as compared to those for urban and rural residents (p< 0.05), implying the continuous and greater exposure to these chemicals in the e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209 (92-98%) was the major congener of PBDEs and CB 52 (26-51%) was the main congener of PCB in nail samples. However, no significant gender difference was observed for PBDE and PCB levels in nails from all three investigated areas, and no significant correlation was found between their levels and the age of the participants. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of CBs 95 and 132 indicated that the external sources (e.g.dust and/or air) were the primary sources for CBs 95 and 132 in human nails from the e-waste area, while the contribution from the internal sources (e.g.serum) could be in a small percentage. The results of this study indicate that human nails can be used as a proper indicator of human exposure to PCBs and PBDEs, and further studies are needed by a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the PCB and PBDE levels in the nails and serum and/or other internal tissues.
