A copper-catalysed hydroxylation of diaryliodoniums to generate phenols and diaryl ethers is reported. This method allows the synthesis of diversely functionalized phenols under mild reaction conditions without the need for a strong inorganic base or an expensive noble-metal catalyst. In this study, the influence of grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) was studied on citric acid and zinc oxide incorporated cellulose-based hydrogel films. The effect of GFSE (0.25-1.0%, v/v) on hydrogel films was examined for their physico-chemical, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The swelling ratio, tensile strength and thermal stability of films decreased with increase in GFSE concentrations. On the other hand, elongation (%) and antioxidant activity of films were found to be 34-60% and 25-79%, respectively for increasing amounts of GFSE. FESEM and FETEM clearly showed that two different types of nanoparticles (50-90 nm and 5-10 nm) were present in GFSE incorporated films. The release of polyphenolic compounds and zinc from films was in sustained manner. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel films exhibited antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. All these results indicate that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel films could find their potential applications in wound healing.

This paper studies the cooperative effect of Au nanoparticles deposited on vanadyl pyrophosphate oxide (VPO) in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol. VPO was prepared using the classical method by thermally treating VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O precursor in reacting atmosphere at 420 degrees C for a period of 72 h. Au nanoparticles were deposited by incipient wetness method. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, TEM, XPS and Raman. The bulk VPO catalyst contains vanadyl pyrophosphate phase ((VO)(2)P2O7), and a small amount of VOPO4. The catalytic system exhibits a high activity in the base-free liquid phase oxidation of alcohols compared to Au on activated carbon, classic catalyst used for this type of reaction. Au/VPO showed a high peculiar selectivity to benzyl benzoate (76%), an important product used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. This behavior might be ascribed to the presence of strong acid sites of VPO, as determined by liquid phase titration. Stability tests performed on Au/VPO showed a deactivation of 10% after the first run, but a constant conversion along the following five cycles. This phenomenon can be attributed to the increase of mean Au particle size (from 19.1 to 23.4 nm) after recycling tests as well as the partial leaching of Au and V in the reaction media. Moreover, XRD evidenced a modification in the VPO structure with the partial formation of VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O phase.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Pb-210-dated sediment cores and surface sediments from Lake Chapala (LC), Mexico, were analyzed to assess the temporal trends in concentrations and fluxes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PAHs, PCBs and PBDEs). Total sediment concentrations of PAHs (95-1,482 ng g(-1)), PCBs (9-27 ng g(-1)) and PBDEs (0.2-2.5 ng g(-1)) were indicative of moderate to intense contamination. The POP concentrations have progressively increased since the 1990s. The light molecular weight PAHs, and the prevalence of PCB congeners with low-chlorination levels (e.g., di- to tri-CB) and low-to medium-brominated (tri- to penta-BDE) PBDEs in most sections of the sediment profiles, suggested that these POPs have most likely reached these sediments by long-range atmospheric transport from distant sources; although the significant presence of heavier PAH, PCB and PBDE congeners in the topmost sediments, indicate that other nearby and local sources (soil erosion from the catchment, urban and industrial wastewaters discharges, as well as navigation) might have also contributed to the recent input of POPs to LC. Taking into account the relevance of LC as regional freshwater supply and commercial fishing ground, the potential risk posed by the organic contaminated sediments to the biota and human population should not be underestimated.

A nondirected amidation reaction of aromatic C-H bond was developed under iron(II) catalysis, using sulfonyl azides as the nitrogen source. Rationale: Structural remodeling or damage as a result of disease or injury is often not evenly distributed throughout a tissue but strongly depends on localization and extent of damaging stimuli. Skeletal muscle as a mechanically active organ can express signs of local or even systemic myopathic damage, necrosis, or repair. Conventionally, muscle biopsies (patients) or whole muscles (animal models) are mechanically sliced and stained to assess structural alterations histologically. Three-dimensional tissue information can be obtained by applying deep imaging modalities, e.g. multiphoton or light-sheet microscopy. Chemical clearing approaches reduce scattering, e.g. through matching refractive tissue indices, to overcome optical penetration depth limits in thick tissues. Methods: Here, we optimized a range of different clearing protocols. We find aqueous solution-based protocols employing (20-80%) 2,2′-thiodiethanol (TDE) to be advantageous over organic solvents (dibenzyl ether, cinnamate) regarding the preservation of muscle morphology, ease-of-use, hazard level, and costs. Results: Applying TDE clearing to a mouse model of local cardiotoxin (CTX)-induced muscle necrosis, a complete loss of myosin-II signals was observed in necrotic areas with little change in fibrous collagen or autofluorescence (AF) signals. The 3D aspect of myofiber integrity could be assessed, and muscle necrosis in whole muscle was quantified locally via the ratios of detected AF, forward- and backward-scattered Second Harmonic Generation (fSHG, bSHG) signals. Conclusion: TDE optical clearing is a versatile tool to study muscle architecture in conjunction with label-free multiphoton imaging in 3D in injury/myopathy models and might also be useful in studying larger biofabricated constructs in regenerative medicine.

A broad spectrum of applications of magnetic nanoparticles leads to the need for the precise tuning of their magnetic properties. In this study, a series of magnetite and zinc-ferrite nanoparticles were successfully prepared by modified high-temperature synthesis in a controlled gas atmosphere. Nanoparticles with different zinc to iron ratios and pure Fe3O4 were obtained. The structure of the nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy. These revealed the single domain character of the nanoparticles and the influence of the synthesis temperature and zinc to iron ratio on their shape and size. Chemical structure was characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy coupled with an argon gas cluster ion beam (Ar-GCIB) allowed the study of subsequent layers of the nanoparticles without altering their chemical structure. This revealed the presence of a carbon layer on all nanoparticles consisting of capping agents used in the synthesis and revealed the core-shell character of the zinc ferrite particles. In addition, different types of zinc infusions in the nanoparticle structure were observed when using different Zn/Fe ratios. Finally, magnetic studies performed by means of vibrating sample magnetometry proved the superparamagnetic behavior of all the samples.

A green, cost-effective and facile steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) strategy was developed to synthesize core-shell-structured zeolite composites with different frameworks between the core and shell. Chemical incompatibility from different structures has been circumvented by dip-coating Silicalite-1 seeds and an in situ transformation process. Beta@Silicalite-1 zeolites with a nanoscale polycrystal Silicalite-1 shell wrapped around the monocrystal Beta core was synthesized. The crystallization process and synthetic parameters, such as the composition of the core, crystallization temperature and gel composition of the seed solution, were investigated. The results revealed the importance of stability of the core and the crystallization rate of the Silicalite-1 shell. Interestingly, a trace amount of aluminum in the core zeolite could help resist corrosion during crystallization. Further investigation on alkylation and etherification reactions over Beta@Silicalite-1 demonstrated the advantage in selectivity control toward self-etherification versus alkylation.
