A synthetic approach to a novel type of phosphonium and mixed phosphonium-iodonium ylides containing a conformationally fixed phosphonium fragment is developed. New representatives of these families of chemical compounds based on cyclic phenoxaphosphinine were synthesized. One compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Based on the H-1 NMR data, one can state that phosphonium ylide exists in solution in the form of two geometric isomers even at room temperature. This is indicative of pronounced double-bond character of the bond between the ylide carbon atom and the stabilizing carbomethoxy group.

The increasing risk of fossil fuels depletion due to surging energy demand has accelerated the search of alternative renewable sources. Lignin, one of the major components of lignocellulosic biomass, is the only abundant renewable natural resource for aromatic compounds. In this work, the effects of metals and process parameters were discussed via the catalytic hydrogenolysis of beta-O-4 lignin model compound, 2-phenethyl phenyl ether. The best results were obtained over Rh/Nb2O5 with an overall conversion of 99.3% and exceptional selectivity of 98.9% to aromatic products when the hydrogenolysis was carried out at 260 degrees C and 0.1 MPa H-2 for 4 h. The high efficiency is mainly attributed to the cooperation between Rh and NbOx at the perimeter sites, in which Rh particles are responsible for the dissociation of H-2 and NbOx for activating CeO bonds. With respect to depolymerize of ash wood lignin, the liquid products were mostly aromatics over Rh/Nb2O5 under 0.1 MPa H-2. The results achieved in this work provide a promising prospect towards valorization of lignin into production of valuable aromatic compounds under low hydrogen pressure.

New 1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their in vivo antihistaminic activity on guinea pig trachea by using chlorpheniramine as the standard drug. It was found that compound 5a1 displayed a promising bronchorelaxant effect in conscious guinea pigs using the in vivo model. A molecular docking study was performed to understand the molecular interaction and binding mode of the compounds in the active site of the H1 receptor. Furthermore, in silico computational studies were also performed to predict the binding modes and pharmacokinetic parameters of these derivatives. Prior to the start of experimental lab work, PASS software was used to predict the biological activities of these compounds. An in silico PASS, Swiss ADME assisted docking approach was found to be suitable to derive and synthesize effective antihistaminic agents for the present study.

Hierarchical SAPO-18 molecular sieve was successfully post-synthesized in the alkaline tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) solution and hydrochloride (HCl) acid solution. In the TEAOH solution, preferential dissolution occurs surrounding the defect sites in a controlled manner, leading to hierarchical SAPO-18 with wellpreserved chemical compositions and crystallinities. In acidic solution, the dissolution is revealed to be sensitive to both the defects and the chemical compositions (selective dissolution of the Si-O-Al domains), which cooperatively contribute to the generation of meso-/macropores in the crystals. The crystallization of SAPO-18 precursor is thus inferred to proceed via an oriented nanoparticle attachment mechanism in the early stage. The twinning and intergmwth of nanoparticles occur in an ordered way, leading to the oriented arrangement of the crystallite boundaries. The defects located at the intergrowth interface are prone to acid/alkaline attacks, and play crucial role in the development of hierarchical pore systems. The hierarchical SAPO-18 sample exhibits excellent catalytic reaction performance in the liquid phase benzylation reaction of benzene and benzyl alcohol.

Efficient oil adsorption and recovery is a generous universal importance for future energy demand and environmental protection. Adsorbents based on 2D flatland with engineered surfaces can overcome the limitations of conventional methods for selective oil adsorption. Here, we report magnetic hydrophobic/oleophilic graphitic C3N4 nanosheets that exhibit excellent oil sorption performance and rapid removal of adsorbed oil using an external magnet. Combining porous and nanosheets structure along with magnetic FeNi3 and fatty acid surface functionalization make the system an efficient adsorbent for adsorbing and separating crude oil from water. The graphitic sheets selectively adsorb crude oil with enhancement of thickness up to 9 folds and mass by 4.5 times than the pristine nanocomposite system. The smart adsorption property of g-C3N4@FeNi3 has been realized through comprehensive adsorption kinetics and inclusive isotherm studies. The nanocomposite can be further recycled and reused in an eco-friendly manner for oil adsorption and recovery.

High levels of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) have been found in the marine predatory seabird great skua (Stercorarius skua) from breeding colonies in the Northeastern Atlantic, with large unexplained inter-colony variation. The present study aimed at analyzing if the HOCs occurrence in breeding great skuas in remote colonies was explained by local baseline food web exposure determined by long-range transport, or by ecological factors such as diet specialization and relative trophic position in the breeding area. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was analyzed in plasma of 204 adult great skuas collected over two years (2008 and 2009) and 5 colonies across the North-Atlantic from Shetland to Svalbard. The HOCs levels in plasma ranged across two orders of magnitude, from 40 to 7600 ng/g (wet weight) and differed significantly across the great skua colonies. The variation in contaminant occurrence among colonies did not reflect long-range transport through a latitudinal or remoteness gradient, as the second northernmost colony (Bjornoya), had the highest contaminant concentrations. No latitudinal or remoteness gradient was evident in the contaminant pattern among the colonies. The contaminant levels increased significantly with increasing delta N-15 values, and regurgitated pellets of undigested prey suggested that great skuas with higher delta N-15 values had a higher proportion of bird prey in their diet, mostly seabirds. In contrast, great skuas from colonies with lower delta N-15 and lower contaminant level fed mostly on fish. The enrichment of delta N-13 increased with decreasing delta N-15 and lower contaminant levels. Therefore, individual behavior of great skuas, such as migration strategies and diet specialization, rather than long-range transport and thus baseline food web exposure, explain among and within colony variance in contaminant occurrence. With the aid of direct heating through microwave irradiation in non-aqueous media, nanocrystalline tungsten(vi) oxide is achievable in 30 minutes at 200 degrees C, faster and at a lower temperature than conventional synthesis methods. Forming in a platelet morphology, these particles are as small as 20 nm with a BET surface area of 37 m(2) g(-1) WO3. These nanoplatelets are active for the photocatalytic oxidation of the 1 degrees alcohols benzyl alcohol (rate constant, k of 2.6 x 10(-3) h(-1)) and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfural (k of 0.01 h(-1)) using 10 mg of WO3 with 2 mL of 0.250 M substrate in acetonitrile and a 150 mW cm(-2) 460 nm blue LED source. As expected, these rate constants are larger than those observed for commercially prepared, micron-sized WO3. XPS analysis shows that during catalysis, the concentration of W5+ on the surface increases, but the nanoplatelets are stable under these reaction conditions. The overall morphology and size of the particles are retained through the reactions. Moreover, the nanoplatelets are recyclable-showing no loss in activity for four reaction cycles.

The methoxyl group is the most abundant functional group of lignin and affects the properties, reactivity, and application of lignin. Efficient demethylation is always of interest in the area of lignin chemistry and application. This study demonstrated a new method for cleaving ether compounds and demethylating lignin in acidic concentrated lithium bromide (ACLB) solution under mild conditions. It was found that the ACLB system could universally cleave ether compounds except for diaryl ethers. The study on lignin model compounds (creosol, syringol, and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene) verified that ACLB could demethylate them to corresponding phenols. Four real lignin samples produced from various sources by different methods were also efficiently demethylated by 69-82% in ACLB. The lignin demethylation resulted in more phenolic hydroxyl groups, which benefits some downstream applications of lignin. This study also provided new insights into the cleavage of the ether bonds in lignin. In addition to the methyl-aryl ether bond, ACLB could cleave other ether bonds of lignin in beta-O-4, beta-5, and beta-beta structures except for the 4-O-5 bond in the diphenyl structure. The ether bonds were cleaved via the S(N)2 substitution except for the beta-O-4 bond, which was primarily cleaved via the benzyl cation and enol ether intermediates, leading to Hibbert’s ketones. Some of the beta-O-4 structures were transformed into benzodioxane (BD) structures, which were stable in the ACLB system.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are commonly used as flame retardants (FRs) and plasticizers. The usage of OPEs has increased recently due to the ban of several brominated flame retardants, but information on levels in the environment, including the indoor environment is still limited. We investigated the occurrence and distribution of 12 OPEs in urban house dust from Vancouver, Canada; Istanbul, Turkey; and Cairo, Egypt. The medianSOPE concentration was 41.4 mu g/g in the Vancouver samples while median levels in Istanbul and Cairo were significantly lower. The median composition profiles of OPEs in Vancouver and Cairo were dominated by tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), accounting for 56 and 92% of total OPEs respectively while it showed a detection frequency of only 14% in Istanbul. Tris (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant chlorinated OPE representing 20 and 36% of the total OPEs in Vancouver and Istanbul respectively, but was below the detection limit in the Cairo dust samples. Consistent with other studies, SOPE concentrations were similar to 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than PBDEs and currently used flame retardants in the same dust samples. The mean estimated daily intakes (EDI) of SOPE from dust were 115, 38 and 9 ng/kg/bw/day in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively for toddlers where adults were similar to 10 times lower. The total toddler OPE intake ranged from 115 to 2900, 38 to 845 and from9 to 240 ng/kg bw/day across the three cities. TBOEP had the largest contribution to the EDI in both toddler and adults, where toddler TBOEP exposures via dust represented 4% to 80%, 2% to 44% and 0.1% to 6% of the Reference Doses (RfD) in the mean and high intake scenarios for toddlers in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively. A series of novel aromatic poly(ether ketone amide)s (PEKAs) were synthesized by the heterogeneous palladium-catalyzed carbonylative polycondensation of aromatic diiodides with ether ketone units, aromatic diamines, and carbon monoxide in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) at 120 degrees C using 6 mol% of a magnetic nanoparticles-supported bidentate phosphine palladium complex (Fe3O4@SiO2-2P-PdCl2) as catalyst and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]-7-undecene as base. The PEKAs had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.61 dl g(-1) to 0.75 dl g(-1). All the PEKAs were soluble in strong dipolar organic solvents. These PEKAs showed glass transition temperatures between 178 degrees C and 232 degrees C and 10% weight loss temperatures ranging from 443 degrees C to 496 degrees C in nitrogen. These PEKAs could be cast into transparent, flexible, and strong films from DMAc solutions with tensile strengths of 72.8-82.6 MPa, tensile moduli of 2.19-2.84 GPa, and elongations at break of 5.4-7.5%. Importantly, the heterogeneous palladium catalyst can be conveniently recovered from the reaction mixture by simply applying an external magnet and recycled up to eight times without significant loss of activity.
