Ceria (CeO2) is a technologically promising compound due to a remarkable set of properties. However, the use of ceria also has drawbacks, the most pronounced of which is the material’s poor thermal stability. This property limits the use of ceria-based materials at elevated temperatures, in many technological applications. To overcome this, the addition of TiO2 is proposed. Such addition essentially creates a new material system, namely Ce1-xTixO2. In this work, an array of techniques were employed to determine the thermal stability of this new compound range (X < 0.2). Results show that when nano-sized, TiO(2 )is fully soluble in CeO2 in this range. After heat treatment, however, the material coarsens and the solubility limit decreases to less than 2 at.%. as the compound undergoes significant changes. These include solute segregation and phase separation. Finally, the factors that affect compound stability are discussed. Formula: C12H10O. A combination of carbon ions/photons irradiation and hyperthermia as a novel therapeutic approach for the in-vitro treatment of pancreatic cancer BxPC3 cells is presented. The radiation doses used are 0-2 Gy for carbon ions and 0-7 Gy for 6 MV photons. Hyperthermia is realized via a standard heating bath, assisted by magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) that utilizes magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exposed to an alternating magnetic field of amplitude 19.5 mTesla and frequency 109.8 kHz. Starting from 37 degrees C, the temperature is gradually increased and the sample is kept at 42 degrees C for 30 min. For MFH, MNPs with a mean diameter of 19 nm and specific absorption rate of 110 +/- 30 W/g(Fe3)o(4) coated with a biocompatible ligand to ensure stability in physiological media are used. Irradiation diminishes the clonogenic survival at an extent that depends on the radiation type, and its decrease is amplified both by the MNPs cellular uptake and the hyperthermia protocol. Significant increases in DNA double-strand breaks at 6 h are observed in samples exposed to MNP uptake, treated with 0.75 Gy carbon-ion irradiation and hyperthermia. The proposed experimental protocol, based on the combination of hadron irradiation and hyperthermia, represents a first step towards an innovative clinical option for pancreatic cancer.

The Shocking Revelation of Diphenyl oxide

I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article IRMOF-74(n)-Mg: a novel catalyst series for hydrogen activation and hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds published in 2019.0. Quality Control of Diphenyl oxide, Reprint Addresses Stavila, V; Allendorf, MD (corresponding author), Sandia Natl Labs, Chem Combust & Mat Ctr, Livermore, CA 94551 USA.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Diphenyl oxide

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) that catalyze hydrogenolysis reactions are rare and there is little understanding of how the MOF, hydrogen, and substrate molecules interact. In this regard, the isoreticular IRMOF-74 series, two of which are known catalysts for hydrogenolysis of aromatic C-O bonds, provides an unusual opportunity for systematic probing of these reactions. The diameter of the 1D open channels can be varied within a common topology owing to the common secondary building unit (SBU) and controllable length of the hydroxy-carboxylate struts. We show that the first four members of the IRMOF-74(Mg) series are inherently catalytic for aromatic C-O bond hydrogenolysis and that the conversion varies non-monotonically with pore size. These catalysts are recyclable and reusable, retaining their crystallinity and framework structure after the hydrogenolysis reaction. The hydrogenolysis conversion of phenylethylphenyl ether (PPE), benzylphenyl ether (BPE), and diphenyl ether (DPE) varies as PPE > BPE > DPE, consistent with the strength of the C-O bond. Counterintuitively, however, the conversion also follows the trend IRMOF-74(III) > IRMOF-74(IV) > IRMOF-74(II) > IRMOF-74(I), with little variation in the corresponding selectivity. DFT calculations suggest the unexpected behavior is due to much stronger ether and phenol binding to the Mg(ii) open metal sites (OMS) of IRMOF-74(III), resulting from a structural distortion that moves the Mg2+ ions toward the interior of the pore. Solid-state Mg-25 NMR data indicate that both H-2 and ether molecules interact with the Mg(ii) OMS and hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions show that these MOFs activate dihydrogen bonds. The results suggest that both confinement and the presence of reactive metals are essential for achieving the high catalytic activity, but that subtle variations in pore structure can significantly affect the catalysis. Moreover, they challenge the notion that simply increasing MOF pore size within a constant topology will lead to higher conversions.

The occurrence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere of six sites with different emission sources in the province of Cordoba, Argentina, was analyzed. The sites included urban, industrial, agricultural, and mountain areas. Samples were collected using passive air samplers (PAS) consisting of polyurethane foam disks (PUF). Samples were analyzed for 12 PAHs, 31 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 12 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of PAHs in the atmosphere were elevated at urban sites and were even higher at the industrial site. With respect to OCPs, it was observed that the concentrations of endosulfan were greater at the agricultural site (AGR) (416 +/- 4pgm(-3)). For hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), only the alpha isomer was detected and there were minimal differences between the different sampling sites (5.9-13.3pgm(-3)). In the case of dieldrin, the highest concentrations (33.6pgm(-3)) were found at the mountain site, which may have been due to its use for insect control. Although heptachlor epoxide was not detected, the concentration of heptachlor was significantly higher at the agricultural and downtown sites (approximate to 3.6pgm(-3)). Regarding DDTs, the isomers p,p-DDT and p,p-DDE showed the highest concentrations at the mountain site (sigma DDT 120 +/- 12pgm(-3)) and downtown site (sigma DDT 157 +/- 62pgm(-3)). The relationship between the isomers suggested that at the downtown site, the contribution of this pesticide to the environment was recent, probably for the control of diseases vectors. The congener pattern of PBDEs was dominated by BDE-47, and BDE-99 at all sites, with the downtown site having the highest concentrations of compound esters (sigma PBDEs 118 +/- 38pgm(-3)). Finally, high concentrations of PCBs were found at the industrial site (sigma PCBs 1677 +/- 134pgm(-3)), and the predominating homologs were 5-Cl and 6-Cl, in contrast to the other sites where PCBs were dominated by 3-Cl and 4-Cl. This is the first study of POPs carried out in the province of Cordoba.

The adoption of solution-processed active layers in the production of thin-alm photovoltaics is hampered by the transition from research fabrication techniques to scalable processing. We report a detailed study of the role of processing in determining the morphology and performance of organic photovoltaic devices using a commercially available, low-solubility, high-molar mass diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymer donor. Ambient blade coating of thick layers in an inverted architecture was performed to best model scalable processing. Device performance was strongly dependent on the introduction of either o-dichlorobenzene (DCB), 1,8-diiodooctane, or diphenyl ether cosolvent into the chloroform (CHCl3) solution, which were all shown to drastically improve the morphology. To understand the origin of these morphological changes as a result of the addition of the cosolvent, in situ studies with grazing-incidence X-ray scattering and optical reflection interferometry were performed. Use of any of the cosolvents decreases the domain size relative to the single solvent system and moved the drying mechanism away from what is likely liquid-liquid phase separation to solid-liquid phase separation driven by polymer aggregation. Comparing the CHCl3 + DCB cast films to the CHCl3-only cast films, we observed both the formation of small domains and an increase in crystallinity during the evaporation of DCB due to a high nucleation rate from supersaturation. This resulted in percolated bulk heterojunction networks that performed similarly well with a wide range of film thicknesses from 180 to 440 nm, making this system amenable to continuous roll-to-roll processing methods.

Mesoporous TiO2(B) whisker was firstly applied as a support for synthesizing the novel sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/TiO2(B)). According to NH3-TPD, TG and Py-IR characterization results, it was found that the similar amount of sulfate group on TiO2(B) and anatase showed significantly different acid characteristics and catalytic performances. The total acid amount of SO42-/TiO2(B) was about 1.8 times as anatase-supported sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/Anatase). Simultaneously, the SO42-/TiO2(B) possessed higher percentage of Bronsted acid and more weak-medium acid strength than SO42-/Anatase. These acidic properties endowed SO42-/TiO2(B) with the increased esterification reaction rate and decreased alkylation byproduct selectivity compared with that of SO42-/Anatase. Structure-performance analysis exhibited that there were more bridged bidentate sulfate groups coordinated to the TiO2(B) in SO42-/TiO2(B), which could induce more Ti cations than that of the chelating one. This was the key factor to be responsible for the unique acid characteristics of SO42-/TiO2(B). The present work provides a novel solid superacid and might open a strategy to mediate the acid characteristic for sulfated solid superacid.

In this study, a well-defined, novel NHC-Ni complex was developed and used to catalyze the N-arylation of alkyl- and arylamines with arylboronic acids in a rare version of Chan-Lam coupling. Although the same coupling using copper catalysts has been widely studied, the nickel-catalyzed version is rare and normally requires 10-20 mol% catalyst loading. This novel NHC-Ni complex in combination with 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, however, proved to be an effective catalyst that lowered the required catalyst loading to only 2.0 mol%. alpha-Diimine niobium complexes serve as catalysts for deoxygenation of benzyl ethers by silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) to cleanly give two equivalents of the corresponding benzyl chlorides, where SiCl4 has the dual function of oxygen scavenger and chloride source with the formation of a silyl ether or silica as the only byproduct. The reaction mechanism has two successive trans-etherification steps that are mediated by the niobium catalyst, first forming one equivalent of benzyl chloride along with the corresponding silyl ether intermediate that undergoes the same reaction pathway to give the second equivalent of benzyl chloride and silyl ether.

The comprehensive identification of organic species existing in indoor environments is a key issue to understand their impact in human health. This study proposes the analysis of condensed water samples, collected with portable dehumidifiers, to characterize semi-volatile compounds in the gas phase of confined areas. Water samples are concentrated by solid-phase extraction (SPE). The obtained extracts are analysed by gas chromatography (GC) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), following a nontarget screening data mining approach. In first term, spectra of deconvoluted compounds are compared with those in NIST low resolution library; thereafter, tentative identifications are verified using an inhouse database of accurate electron ionization (EI) MS spectra. Chromatographic (retention index) and spectral data are combined for unambiguous species identification. The potential of condensed water samples to reflect changes in the composition of indoor atmospheres, the match between data obtained using different dehumidifiers, and the relative concentration efficiency of condensed water compared to that attained by active sampling of moderate air volumes are discussed. A total of 141 semi-volatile compounds were identified (98 confirmed against authentic standards) in a set of 21 samples obtained from different homes and working places. This list contains more than 40 fragrances (including several potential allergens), solvents and intermediates in the production of polymeric materials, plasticizers and flame retardants. This study illustrated the pyrolysis of banana peel (BP) as a potential waste management solution. Samples were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), elemental analysis, and high heating value (HHV) calculation. After pyrolysis experiments were performed at different heating rates (10, 20, 30, and 40 degrees C min(-1)) by using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with FTIR (TG-FTIR), the apparent activation energies were computed with Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) methods, and the evolved gaseous products were analyzed simultaneously. During pyrolysis, BP underwent three devolatilization steps accompanied by the evolution of some major gaseous products, including CO2, CH4, H2O, CH3COOH, C=C, C6H5OH, HCOOH, and CH3CH2OH. Among them, C=C, CH3COOH, and CO2 accounted for approximately 71.56% of the total gaseous products. Gas evolution was more significantly influenced by the pyrolysis temperature than by the heating rate. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis confirmed the presence of some high-energy compounds and valuable chemicals containing aromatic, aldehyde, ketone, and other functional groups. In terms of preliminary energy balance, more than 70% of the total energy output was attributed to the liquid pyrolytic products followed by the solid and gaseous products. The energy recovery ratio of BP pyrolysis was superior to that of other fuel feedstocks. This work provided insights into resolving environmental problems associated with BP management by pyrolyzing BP as a potential source of renewable bioenergy.
