Magnetic nanospheres are versatile candidates for both fundamental and practical applications. Before they are applied in more complicated fields, their surface must be modified by several functionalities. However, the surface modification can be affected by the magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) embedded in the polymer matrix. Herein, the synthesis of poly(acrylic acid) coated magnetic nanospheres via a multiple polymerization route is described. During the synthesis process, seed emulsion polymerization was applied to redistribute the MNP in the polymer matrix, and the relationship between the structure of magnetic nanospheres and the thickness of the grafted poly(acrylic acid) layer was investigated. The development of size, morphology and magnetic properties of the nanospheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry. This work would pave the way to design and preparation of new structure of functional magnetic nanospheres with precise surface modification.

Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1 : 1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.

We have designed a functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO topology as a support, with an extremely high surface area, adjustable pore sizes and stable crystalline coordination polymeric structure and implanted copper (Cu) nanoparticles thereon. The core three dimensional Zr-derived MOF (UiO-66-NH2) was modified with a biguanidine moiety following a covalent post-functionalization approach. The morphological and physicochemical features of the material were determined using analytical methods such as FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDX, atomic mapping, XRD and ICP-OES. The SEM and XRD results justified the unaffected morphology of Zr-MOF after structural modifications. The as-synthesized UiO-66-biguanidine/Cu nanocomposite was catalytically explored in the aryl and heteroaryl Buchwald-Hartwig C-N and Ullmann type C-O cross coupling reactions with excellent yields. A library of biaryl amine and biaryl ethers was synthesized over the catalyst under mild and green conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was isolated by centrifugation and recycled 11 times with no significant copper leaching or change in its activity.

Self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered patterns is a novel approach to build up new consolidated materials with desired collective physical properties. Herein, nanoparticle assemblies of composition-modulated bimagnetic nanoparticles have been produced via slow evaporation of their colloidal suspension in the absence or presence of magnetic fields. The assemblies obtained in the presence of the magnetic fields exhibit oriented nanoparticle chains in face-centered cubic superlattice structures, compared with the hexagonal closed-packed superlattice obtained without the magnetic field. The oriented structure has an alignment of the easy magnetization axis along the chains. This alignment leads to enhanced intra-superlattice interactions. As a result, the field-induced assembly displays collective magnetic properties with significantly enhanced magnetic anisotropy, remanent magnetization and coercivity. It is also found that the bimagnetic FeCo/CoFe2O4 core/shell nanostructure enhances the intra-particle interaction and thus is beneficial for the growth of oriented assembly of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the collective magnetic behavior is evidenced by the observation of a superferromagnetic-like magnetization relaxation in the ac-susceptibility curves.

The transfer hydrogenolysis of lignin derived aromatic ethers (benzyl phenyl ether, phenethyl phenyl ether and diphenyl ethers) have been investigated by using the coprecipitated Pd/Co as heterogeneous catalyst and 2propanol as H-donor/solvent. A quantitative conversion of benzyl phenyl ether into toluene and cyclohexanol was obtained after 180 min at 240 degrees C. The bimetallic Pd/Co catalyst is, by far, more efficient if compared to commercial Pd/C and Co-based catalytic systems showing, at the same time, a good reusability. The enhanced ability in the CeO bond cleavage in aromatic ethers is related to the formation of bimetallic Pd-Co ensembles, arisen from the preparation procedure adopted, as confirmed by a complete physico-chemical characterization that includes XRD, SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, XPS and EXAFS analysis.

Hierarchically porous P substituted HZSM-5 (H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M ) was successfully synthesized by isomorphous substitution method with introduced P atoms into ZSM-5 zeolite frameworks followed by alkali treatment. H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M was characterized by XRD, ICP-OES, SEM, FT-IR, N-2 adsorption-desorption, NH3-TPD, XPS, Py-IR, and TG-DTA, respectively. The surface area, pore volume, particle size and P/Al (molar ratio) are 328 m(2).g(-1), 0.23 cm(3).g(-1), 563 nm and 0.027, respectively. The catalytic performance of H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M in coupling reaction of methanol with 1-butene was investigated in the fixed-bed reactor. On the condition of reaction temperature at 500 degrees C under atmosphere pressure, the main product is propylene with the selectivity and yield of 33.7% and 31.0%, respectively. Hydrogen transfer index was calculated to 0.24. Moreover, its diffusion limitation was investigated with the self-etherification of benzyl alcohol reaction. The value of Thiele modulus (eta) and effectiveness factor (phi) are 0.08 and 16.9, respectively.

Development of new superparamagnetic materials with narrow size distribution is crucial for biomedical and environmental applications. Hence, we report the synthesis of narrow size distributed single grain MnFe(2)O(4)nanoparticles of average particle size 9 nm by solvothermal reflux method. Synthesized compound crystallized in face centered cubic spinel structure and is confirmed by X-ray diffraction profiles. Transmission electron micrograph shows narrow size distributed particles with an average particle size of 9 nm and is equal to crystallite diameter estimated from Scherrer equation. The spinel crystal structure is further confirmed by electron diffraction profiles, Fourier transformed infrared spectrum, and Raman spectrum at room temperature. Magnetic properties of the sample show superparamagnetic nature at room temperature with moderate saturated magnetization of 56.4 emug(-1). Magnetic heating properties of nanoparticles dispersion show the attainment of hyperthermia temperature (43 degrees C) in a short span of time of 1.6 min for 2 mg/mL and 2.6 min for 1 mg/mL concentrations. Estimated specific heat generation rate or specific power absorption rate, from temporal temperature plots, is 145.78 Wg(-1)and is useful for magnetic hyperthermia application in cancer therapy. Photocatalysis properties of sample show 96% of rhodamine B dye degradation in little less than 6 h under UV light irradiation and are useful for photocatalytic applications in wastewater treatment in industries.

Aim: Organophosphorus compounds are irreversible inhibitors of AChE. Without immediate countermeasure, intoxication leads quickly to death. A new benzodithiophene based donor-acceptor pi-conjugated polymer (P1) is designed and explored as the photoactive donor for organic solar cells (OSCs). The synthesized donor polymer, P1 displays a wide absorption profile ranging from 300-750 nm with optical band gap of 1.61 eV and moderate ionization potential of -5.30 eV. It has good solubility in non-halogenated and halogenated organic solvents. Next, we fabricated OSCs with P1 by blending with PC71BM, the pristine polymer processed from chlorobenzene showed PCE of 2.79%. Upon addition of external additive diphenyl ether to the blend showed a dramatic improvement in PCE with maximum of 5.33%. DPE tailored the active layer morphology and showed two times higher PCE than pristine films. These results clearly indicate that the new polymer has a great potentiality for enhancing efficiency upon solvent additives, which will provide new routes for the development of new class of polymers for high-performance air-stable OSCs.
