Here, we have successfully synthesised and purified multifunctional PLGA-based nanoparticles by the co-encapsulation of an anticancer drug (tetrandrine) and a magnetic material (Fe3O4). The obtained Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs had a uniform spherical shape with a particle size of approximately 199nm and a negative surface charge of -18.0mV, displaying a high encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, TEM studies provided representative images of the purification process of the magnetic nanoparticles with MACS((R)) technology. The MFM and VSM results indicated that both the Fe3O4 NPs and Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs were superparamagnetic. The DSC spectrum demonstrated that Tet was successfully encapsulated within the PLGA-based nanoparticles. Significantly, the release studies revealed NPs had a relatively slower release rate than free Tet after 8h’s initial burst release, which had decreased from 98% to 65% after 24h. In vitro cellular studies revealed that NPs could effectively penetrate into A549 cells and A549 multicellular spheroids to exert cytotoxicity, displaying a significantly high anti-proliferation effect. Moreover, western blot demonstrated that the co-loaded NPs had a higher anticancer activity by injuring lysosomes to activate the mitochondria pathway and induce A549 cell apoptosis. The magnetic characteristics and high anticancer activity support the use of Tet/Fe3O4 co-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles as a promising strategy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

In the present study, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and compound-specific isotope analysis were used to investigate the in situ biodegradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment cores collected from a pond at an e-waste recycling site in South China. The potential microorganisms relevant to the degradation of PBDEs were also assessed to aid in the understanding of in situ biodegradation. The PMF results suggested that reductive debromination took place in the sediments. The debromination signal (ratio of the concentration of factor S (PMF result) to the total PBDE content) was positively correlated with the relative abundance of Dehalococcoidetes at different core depths. The clear C-13 enrichment of five PBDE congeners (BDE 28, 47, 49, 99, and 153) with increasing core depth indicated that a measurable change in isotope fractionation might have occurred during PBDE biodegradation. The in situ biodegradation was further validated by the widespread detection of mono-BDE congeners (BDE 2, BDE 3) and diphenyl ether in the sediments. This study provides new evidence to enhance our understanding of the in situ biodegradation of PBDEs and suggests that the extensive removal of bromine from PBDEs was mediated by indigenous microorganisms at the e-waste site.

The main purpose of this study is to facilitate fragrance development on the basis of scientific knowledge. To this end, data on 314 perfumery raw materials (PRMs) showing the relationship between PRM odor intensity and gas concentration were obtained, and a calculation model for the data was then developed with the following features: (1) maximum PRM coverage, (2) calculating values implying odor intensity from only arbitrary gas concentration, and (3) estimating odor intensity from the calculated values directly and easily. To verify the prediction accuracy of this model, the predicted odor intensity was compared with the evaluated value for both single component and a mixture, and the same degree of root-mean-square error (RMSE) was confirmed. RMSE in the single component was 6.22 while that in the mixture was 6.69. Thus, the odor intensity of a PRM or mixture can be predicted from arbitrary gas concentrations.

In this work it is shown a precise way to optimize the heat generation in high viscosity magnetic colloids, by adjusting the Neel relaxation time in core/shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, for magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) applications. To pursue this goal, Fe3O4/ZnxCo1-xFe2O4 core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized with 8.5 nm mean core diameter, encapsulated in a shell of similar to 1.1 nm of thickness, where the Zn atomic ratio (Zn/(Zn + Co) at%) changes from 33 to 68 at%. The magnetic measurements are consistent with a rigid interface coupling between the core and shell phases, where the effective magnetic anisotropy systematically decreases when the Zn concentration increases, without a significant change of the saturation magnetization. Experiments of MFH of 0.1 wt% of these particles dispersed in water, in Dulbecco modified Eagles minimal essential medium, and a high viscosity butter oil, result in a large specific loss power (SLP), up to 150 W g(-1), when the experiments are performed at 571 kHz and 200 Oe. The SLP was optimized adjusting the shell composition, showing a maximum for intermediate Zn concentration. This study shows a way to maximize the heat generation in viscous media like cytosol, for those biomedical applications that require smaller particle sizes.

Bimetallic FeNi3 nanoparticles (NPs) enriched with Ni (FeNi3@Ni) have been used to perform the hydrodeoxygenation reaction (HDO) and cleavage of lignocellulose-derived products in solution using magnetic induction. The application of a high frequency magnetic field induces high temperatures at the surface of the NPs that drive the catalytic reaction. The activation of the C-O bond of several functional groups was studied. FeNi3@Ni NPs, which act both as catalysts and magnetic heating agents, catalyzed the total conversion of furfural and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural into respectively 2-methylfuran and 2,5-dimethylfuran under mild conditions (12 mol% catalyst, 3 bar H-2, 49 mT). The oligomerization of cyclopentanone, derived from furfural, was also achieved to yield C-10 and C-15 oligocyclopentyl products. Under the same conditions, diphenyl and benzyl phenyl ether, used as model molecules of polymeric lignin, were cleaved at 86% and 100% conversion respectively, to yield a mixture of hydrogenolysis and hydrogenated products. This is explained by the presence of Ni at the surface of the NP that favors the hydrogenation of the aromatic rings. The short reaction times and simplicity of the experimental set-up highlight the advantages of the application of magnetic heating for difficult transformations in solution, here the catalytic treatment of biomass-derived molecules.

Nano ferrites (AFe(2)O(4), A = Zn, Co, Mn, Cu) were supported on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 support by hydrothermal synthesis to prepare a series of novel composite catalysts (AFe(2)O(4)/gamma-Al2O3) for catalytic ozonation for elimination of high concentration toluene at ambient temperature. The characterization results showed that the high-purity nano-AFe(2)O(4) particles were uniformly loaded on mesoporous gamma-Al2O3. Further, it was confirmed that among the several catalysts prepared, the amount of oxygen vacancies (O-vs), Lewis acid sites (LAS), and BrOnsted acid sites (BAS) of the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst were the highest. This meant that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had a strong adsorption capacity for toluene and ozone (O-3), and had a strong catalytic activity. When the temperature was 293 K and the space velocity was 1500 h(-1), the mol ratio of O-3 to toluene was 6, the degradation rate of toluene (600 mg m(-3)) can reach an optimum of 99.8%. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier infrared (FT-IR) proved superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals by catalytic ozonation. Moreover, the GC-MS analysis results indicated that the toluene degradation began with the oxidation of methyl groups on the benzene ring, eventually producing CO2 and H2O. After repeated experiments, the toluene degradation rate remained stable, and the residual content of O-3 in each litre of produced gas was less than 1 mg L-1, thereby indicating that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had excellent reusability and showed great potential for the treatment of toluene waste gas.

In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

Marine plastic debris, including microplastics (<5 mm in size), comprises a suite of chemical ingredients and sorbed chemical contaminants. Thus, microplastics are a potential, and debated, source of anthropogenic chemicals for bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Several studies have investigated the role of microplastics as a vector of contaminants to marine organisms via modeling exercises, laboratory experiments, and field studies. Here, we examined relationships among chemical contaminants and microplastics in lanternfish (family Myctophidae), an important link in marine food webs, from the North Pacific Ocean as a case study from the field. We compared the body burden of several chemical groups (bisphenol A [BPA], nonylphenol [4-NP], octylphenol [4n-OP], alkylphenol ethoxylates [APEs], pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], and polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs]) in fish caught within and outside the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre where plastic is known to accumulate. We also tested whether there was a relationship between chemical concentrations in fish and plastic density at each sampling location. Mean concentrations of common plastic constituents (BPA, 4-NP, 4n-OP, APEs, and total PBDEs) were comparable between myctophids collected within and outside the North Pacific Gyre. Pesticides were higher in lanternfish caught outside the gyre and were associated with lower plastic density. Total PCBs were also higher in fish outside the gyre. In contrast, lower chlorinated PCB congeners were higher in fish residing in the accumulation zone and were correlated with higher plastic density. This finding is consistent with other studies demonstrating an association between lower chlorinated PCBs and plastics in biota and suggests that microplastic may be a transport mechanism for some chemicals in nature. An efficient and simple approach for the direct synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl sulfonic esters was developed using DMS and DES as alkoxysulfonylation reagents. The reaction is operationally simple and scalable. This protocol does not require solvent, expensive catalysts, base, ligand additives or other reagents. A wide range of sulfonic esters were synthesized in moderate to good chemical yields. This method has the advantage of low cost, facile and tolerated a wide range of substrates.
