Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

The molecular diffusion coefficient is fundamental to estimate dispersion coefficients, convective mass transfer coefficients, etc. Since experimental diffusion data is scarce, there is significant demand for accurate models capable of providing reliable diffusion coefficient estimations. In this work we applied machine learning algorithms to develop predictive models to estimate diffusivities of solutes in supercritical carbon dioxide. A database of experimental data containing 13 properties for 174 binary systems totaling 4917 data points was used in the training of the models. Five machine learning algorithms were evaluated and the results were compared with three commonly used classic models. The best results were found using the Gradient Boosted algorithm which showed an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 2.58 % (pure prediction). This model has five parameters: temperature, density, solute molar mass, solute critical pressure and solute acentric factor. For the same dataset, the classic Wilke-Chang equation showed AARD of 12.41 %. The developed model is provided as command line program. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Sigma 9PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Sigma(16)PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. This work deals with the synthesis of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in different solvents and their structural characterization for better understanding the oxygen donor solvent/zirconium precursor/NPs structure relationships. By selecting solvents over their capacity to produce different crystalline states from alkalinized zirconium alkoxide, spherical nanoparticles with a size of about 1.3-3 nm and a narrow size distribution were elaborated using a nonaqueous solvothermal sol-gel route. Conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the average structure and crystallite size of the nanoparticles. Well-crystallized and single-phased nanoparticles with average monoclinic and tetragonal structure were obtained with benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, respectively, and a much distorted structure was observed for the synthesis in anisole. The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) of the samples were also analyzed to access the local structure of the nanoparticles. The PDF of the benzaldehyde-prepared sample is consistent with the monoclinic structure. However, the local structure of nanoparticles synthesized with benzyl alcohol does not fully conform to the tetragonal structure observed by XRD, but exhibits monoclinic-like distortions. Lastly, the anisole-prepared nanoparticles present large structural distortions at the medium range and monoclinic local structural features. The restructuring of this last sample was studied by post-treatments in different solvents and leads to the expression of the tetragonal polymorph. Moreover, it seems that the main structural features are obtained in the early stages of the nanoparticles’ formation.

A novel and highly active zeolite Y/ZSM-5 composite zeolite (CZ)-supported nickel catalyst (Ni/CZ with 10% of Ni loading) was prepared by modified deposition-precipitation to uniformly disperse Ni nanoparticles (NNPs) onto CZ. Hecaogou subbituminous coal was exhaustively extracted with isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixed solvent to afford the extractable portion and inextractable portion (IEP). Ethanol-soluble portion (ESP) was obtained by ethanolyzing the IEP at 300 degrees C and subjected to catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) over Ni-10%/CZ at 160 degrees C to afford catalytically hydroconverted ESP (CHCESP). Both ESP and CHCESP were analyzed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), and quadrupole exactive orbitrap mass spectrometer. The results show that the relative contents (RCs) of both chain alkanes and hydroarenes in CHCESP are significantly higher than those in ESP and cyclanes and alkenes were only detected in CHCESP, while the RCs of both arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds in CHCESP are much lower than those in ESP and nitrogen- and/or sulfur-containing organic compounds were only detected in ESP with GC/MS. According to the CHC of oxybis(methylene)dibenzene (OBMDB), Ni-10%/CZ can effectively activate H-2 to biatomic active hydrogen (H center dot center dot center dot H) and the resulting H center dot center dot center dot H was heterolytically split into an immobile H- attached on Ni/CZ and a mobile H+. H+ transfers to an oxygen atom (OA) in OBMDB and cleaves the C-O bridged bond to produce phenylmethanol (PM) and benzylium, followed by H- abstraction from the Ni/CZ surface by benzylium to form toluene. H+ transfer to the OA in PM also leads to the cleavage of the C-O bond in PM to produce H2O and benzylium, which abstracts H- from the Ni/CZ surface to yield toluene. H center dot center dot center dot H transfer to the benzene ring in toluene generates methylcyclohexane. Therefore, Ni-10%/CZ catalyzes both H+ and H center dot center dot center dot H transfer. Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

Composite worm-like micelles (CWMs) that encapsulate a large number of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (SMNPs) within the core while still having a small width should have a high magnetic resonance sensitivity and simultaneously a desirable circulation behaviour in biological systems. However, the preparation of such CWMs is still a challenge. Herein we report the fabrication of CWMsviatwo-stage self-assembly of SMNPs guided by a block copolymer and DNA, respectively. First, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) co-assembled with SMNPs to form spherical composite micelles, guiding the clustering of multiple SMNPs within the core of the micelles. Then, at the second stage, DNA co-assembled with and guided the linear aggregation and fusion of the micelles, resulting in the CWM encapsulating a large number of SMNPs in the linear core. As a proof of concept, CWMs with aT(2)relaxivity as high as 704 mM(-1)s(-1)and a low MRI detection limit of 2.2 mu g mL(-1)(similar to 0.02 nM CWMs) were prepared; it is significant that theT(2)relaxivity of the SMNPs assembled in the CWMs is around 20 times that of the same SMNPs in the same amount but individually dispersed in the suspension. Additionally, although heavily loaded with SMNPs, the CWMs have a width as small as 20.5 nm and a core-shell structure with PEG as the shell. These features should make the CWMs very promising in their use as ultra-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging probes.

A series of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors based on the resorcinol diphenyl ether scaffold were discovered by incorporating hydrophilic moieties into the side chain and converting into the corresponding hydrochloride salt. Among these compounds, P18 showed the highest inhibitory activity against PD-1/PD-L1 with an IC50 value of 9.1 nM in a homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence binding assay. Besides, P18 promoted HepG2 cell death dose dependently in a HepG2/PD-L1 and Jurkat/PD-1 coculture cell model. Further, P18 demonstrated significantly higher water solubility (17.61 mg/mL) and improved pharmacokinetics (e.g., t(1/2) of similar to 20 h and oral bioavailability of 12%) than the previous analogues. Moreover, P18 was highly effective in suppressing tumor growth in an immune checkpoint humanized mouse model without apparent toxicity. Collectively, these results suggest that compound P18 represents a promising PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor worthy of further investigation as a potential anticancer agent.
