Aim: Superparamagnetic cubic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were synthesized and functionalized with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as a potential agent for cancer treatment. Methods: Monodisperse cubic IONPs with a high value of saturation magnetization were synthesized by thermal decomposition method and functionalized with DMSA via ligand exchange reaction, and their cytotoxic effects on HeLa cells were investigated. Results: DMSA functionalized cubic IONPs with an edge length of 24.5 +/- 1.9 nm had a specific absorption rate value of 197.4 W/g(Fe) (15.95 kA/m and 488 kHz) and showed slight cytotoxicity on HeLa cells when incubated with 3.3 x 10(10), 6.6 x 10(10) and 9.9 x 10(10) NP/mL for 24, 48 and 72 h. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate both the cytotoxic effects of DMSA-coated cubic IONPs on HeLa cells and hyperthermia performance of these nanoparticles.

Background Despite tremendous progress has been achieved in tumor theranostic over the past decade, accurate identification and complete eradication of tumor cells remain a great challenge owing to the limitation of single imaging modality and therapeutic strategy. Results Herein, we successfully design and construct BiVO4/Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) superparticles (SPs) for computed tomography (CT)/photoacoustic (PA)/magnetic resonance (MR) multimodal imaging and radiotherapy (RT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) synergistic therapy toward oral epithelial carcinoma. On the one hand, BiVO4 NPs endow BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with impressive X-ray absorption capability due to the high X-ray attenuation coefficient of Bi, which is beneficial for their utilization as radiosensitizers for CT imaging and RT. On the other hand, Fe3O4 NPs impart BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs with the superparamagnetic property as a T-2-weighted contrast agent for MR imaging. Importantly, the aggregation of Fe3O4 NPs in SPs and the presence of PDA shell greatly improve the photothermal conversion capability of SPs, making BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs as an ideal photothermal transducer for PA imaging and PTT. By integrating advantages of various imaging modalities (CT/PA/MR) and therapeutic strategies (RT/PTT), our BiVO4/Fe3O4@PDA SPs exhibit the sensitive multimodal imaging feature and superior synergistic therapeutic efficacy on tumors. Conclusions Since there are many kinds of building blocks with unique properties appropriating for self-assembly, our work may largely enrich the library of nanomateirals for tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Benzaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde commonly considered in bio-oil surrogate formulation, and an important intermediate in the oxidation of other aromatic reference fuels such as toluene. However, its oxidation has never been previously investigated experimentally and no product formation profiles were reported in the very limited pyrolysis studies available in the literature. In this study, the gas-phase oxidation of benzaldehyde was investigated in a jet-stirred reactor. 48 species were detected using gas chromatography, mainly CO, CO2 and phenol. The important formation of CO and phenol indicates a rapid formation of phenyl radicals. This was confirmed by a kinetic analysis performed using the current version of the CRECK kinetic model, in which the reactions of phenyl radicals and oxygenated aromatic compounds have been updated. Rationale Recently, we have reported a forced degradation study of a pharmaceutical drug regorafenib which contains a phenyl pyridyl ether derivative as building block. We observed interesting rearrangements in two of its degradation products in tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments. As diphenyl ether derivatives are also molecular building blocks of biological importance and used as herbicides and flame retardants, we decided to investigate specifically the fragmentation behavior of these compounds along with phenyl pyridyl derivatives in detail using high-resolution electrospray ionization (ESI) MS/MS. Methods To understand the fragmentation reactions of protonated substituted diphenyl ethers and phenyl pyridyl ethers, ESI-MS/MS experiments were performed using a quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometer. Results In contrast to radical cations of diphenyl ether derivatives which do not eliminate CO, the [M + H](+) ions of substituted diphenyl ethers undergo rearrangement reactions after loss of neutral molecules (H2O, HCl, etc.) to form a bicyclic structure containing a keto group and do eliminate CO. Similar rearrangement followed by fragmentation was observed for protonated phenyl pyridyl ethers and the degradation products formed from regorafenib and sorafenib. Conclusions The protonated ions of substituted diphenyl ethers and phenyl pyridyl ethers on collision-induced dissociation have exhibited interesting rearrangement reactions, despite the nature of the substituent on both the aryl moieties. The proposed fragmentation patterns of these compounds give an insight into the understanding of gas-phase reactions in mass spectrometric studies of diphenyl ether and phenyl pyridyl ether derivatives.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are refractory structures common in heavy hydrocarbons. Thermal cracking in supercritical water (SCW) is limited but PAH can be completely oxidised if an oxidant is added. By restricting oxidant supply to substoichiometric amounts, this study aims to achieve partial oxidation as a route to useful chemicals, such as mono- and bi-aromatics. Oxidative cracking reactions of anthracene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene in subcritical and SCW were studied. PAH conversions well above 90 % were achieved along a fast heating ramp in a batch reactor. This quick initial oxidation took place predominantly in inner rings, weakening the aromatic structure and increasing cracking reactivity. This oxidation-cracking pathway became dominant in the SCW region, producing mostly oxygenated compounds with fewer aromatic rings. On the other hand, competing reactions leading to polymerization were favoured in the subcritical water region. PAH reactivity was found to follow the order anthracene > benzo[a]pyrene > pyrene. The occurrence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere of six sites with different emission sources in the province of Cordoba, Argentina, was analyzed. The sites included urban, industrial, agricultural, and mountain areas. Samples were collected using passive air samplers (PAS) consisting of polyurethane foam disks (PUF). Samples were analyzed for 12 PAHs, 31 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 12 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of PAHs in the atmosphere were elevated at urban sites and were even higher at the industrial site. With respect to OCPs, it was observed that the concentrations of endosulfan were greater at the agricultural site (AGR) (416 +/- 4pgm(-3)). For hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), only the alpha isomer was detected and there were minimal differences between the different sampling sites (5.9-13.3pgm(-3)). In the case of dieldrin, the highest concentrations (33.6pgm(-3)) were found at the mountain site, which may have been due to its use for insect control. Although heptachlor epoxide was not detected, the concentration of heptachlor was significantly higher at the agricultural and downtown sites (approximate to 3.6pgm(-3)). Regarding DDTs, the isomers p,p-DDT and p,p-DDE showed the highest concentrations at the mountain site (sigma DDT 120 +/- 12pgm(-3)) and downtown site (sigma DDT 157 +/- 62pgm(-3)). The relationship between the isomers suggested that at the downtown site, the contribution of this pesticide to the environment was recent, probably for the control of diseases vectors. The congener pattern of PBDEs was dominated by BDE-47, and BDE-99 at all sites, with the downtown site having the highest concentrations of compound esters (sigma PBDEs 118 +/- 38pgm(-3)). Finally, high concentrations of PCBs were found at the industrial site (sigma PCBs 1677 +/- 134pgm(-3)), and the predominating homologs were 5-Cl and 6-Cl, in contrast to the other sites where PCBs were dominated by 3-Cl and 4-Cl. This is the first study of POPs carried out in the province of Cordoba.

Thermal release of guest molecules from poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films, exhibiting host-guest cocrystalline (CC) phases with orientation of their chain axes being preferentially parallel or perpendicular to the film plane (c(parallel to) and c(perpendicular to) orientations), is studied. TGA analyses show that, for all the considered CC PPO films, temperatures of guest release for CC films with c(parallel to) orientation are definitely higher than those for CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation, with differences even higher than 100 degrees C. Correspondingly, DSC scans of CC films with c(perpendicular to) orientation show separated endothermic peaks of guest release and melting, while CC films with c(parallel to) orientation only exhibit one broad endothermic peak with superimposed guest release, glass transition (T-g), and melting (T-m) phenomena. This control of temperatures of guest release could be helpful to maximize the thermal stability of host-guest PPO co-crystalline phases and to tailor temperatures of active guest release.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure and two different morphologies (nanospheres and nanoprisms) were synthesized by a facile one-step method. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanospheres and nanoprisms were monocrystalline and separable in a magnetic field. In different volume ratios of oleylamine (OAm) to dibenzyl ether, the sizes of the prepared Fe3O4 NPs ranged from 5 to 21 nm. The OAm amount in the synthesis can significantly control the morphology of Fe3O4 NPs. As the OAm content increased from 10 ml to 30 ml, the faceted nanoprisms shrank while the nanospheres enlarged. At an OAm content of 25 ml, the nanoprisms diminished while more hexagonal and sphere-like particles appeared, implying a critical point of morphology transition from triangle to hexagon. The magnetic properties also depended on the NP morphology and size. The prepared Fe3O4 NPs are promising candidates in medical applications such as magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery, blood purification, and tumor hyperthermia.

Herein, in situ generated efficient catalysts were designed for fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. Zinc bromide and N,N-dibenzyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromide, being proved as active catalyst species, were in situ generated from cheap Zn powder, dimethyl formamide and benzyl bromide, and catalyzed the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and various terminal epoxides in moderate to excellent yields at 80 degrees C and atmospheric pressure of CO2.
