The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.

Nanofluids are colloidal systems based on the suspension of nanoparticles in a fluid. Their thermal properties mean that they are promising heat transfer fluids with possible applications in different fields, concentrating solar energy being one of particular interest. Thus, this study presents the preparation of nanofluids based on WSe2 nanoparticles suspended in the eutectic mixture of biphenyl and diphenyl oxide, which is a heat transfer fluid widely used in concentrating solar power plants. To this end, solvothermal synthesis was used to prepare WSe2 nanosheets, which were characterized by means of scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The physical and chemical stability of the nanofluids was analyzed, observing that they became more stable when Triton X-100 was used as the surfactant. The presence of WSe2 nanosheets did not result in a significant increase in density or viscosity) but, by contrast, improvements were obtained in their isobaric specific heat and thermal conductivity, up to 4.7 and 64%, respectively. Spectral optical properties were investigated as well, showing a significant effect of the WSe2 nanosheet addition to the extinction coefficient of the base fluid in the wavelength range of the solar spectrum, promising for direct absorption solar collectors. Finally, the efficiency of the nanofluids was analyzed in a solar collector considering the Ur parameter, obtaining a remarkable increase in the efficiency of up to 34% with respect to the pure heat transfer fluid. This proves the possibility to obtain a sustainable production of energy from the sun using these WSe2-based nanofluids.

A new strategy to chemically synthesize exchange-coupled SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites by in situ decomposition of SmCox(5 < x < 8.5) is reported in this work. Our synthesis starts with the fabrication of Co/Sm2O3 (Sm to Co atomic ratio of Sm/Co = 1:4.2), which can be reduced into 40-nm SmCo5 single crystal nanoparticles by Ca under the protection of CaO, showing a high coercivity of 2.85 T and saturation magnetization (M-s) of 0.0671 A.m(2).g(-1). By changing the Sm/Co to 1:4.5, 1:4.8 and 1:5.2, SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites with different proportions were acquired using the same process. Owing to the in situ decomposition of SmCox intermediate, the small size (both of their size less than 10 nm) and uniform phase distribution were achieved in our nanocomposites. Thus, the as-prepared nanocomposites display a strong exchange-coupling interaction. As a consequence, SmCo5/Sm2Co17(Sm/Co = 1:5.2) exhibits a coercivity of 1.23 T and enhanced M-7T(magnetization at 7 T) of 0.0812 A.m(2).g(-1), increasing by 21% than pure SmCo5. Our synthesis provides a new protocol to prepare exchange-coupled high-performance nanocomposites. In this study, the influence of grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) was studied on citric acid and zinc oxide incorporated cellulose-based hydrogel films. The effect of GFSE (0.25-1.0%, v/v) on hydrogel films was examined for their physico-chemical, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The swelling ratio, tensile strength and thermal stability of films decreased with increase in GFSE concentrations. On the other hand, elongation (%) and antioxidant activity of films were found to be 34-60% and 25-79%, respectively for increasing amounts of GFSE. FESEM and FETEM clearly showed that two different types of nanoparticles (50-90 nm and 5-10 nm) were present in GFSE incorporated films. The release of polyphenolic compounds and zinc from films was in sustained manner. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel films exhibited antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. All these results indicate that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel films could find their potential applications in wound healing.

The use of natural diatoms is currently a topic of interest for therapeutic applications due to its facilities, low cost, and biocompatibility. Here, we report the chemical modification of diatoms Aulacoseria genus microalgaederived biosilica from Guayllabamba – Ecuador decorated with gold nanoparticles by In-situ and Ex-situ methods to study the in vitro gentamicin loading and release properties in simulated body fluid (SBF). Successful decoration of the diatoms and loaded with gentamicin was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and Fluorescence Microscopy. We follow the In-vitro drug release by using UltravioletVisible Spectroscopy (UV?vis). Our results revealed that diatoms decorated with gold nanoparticles using the Ex-situ method (Au/CTAB-Diatom) showed a faster release reaching a maximum of 93% in 10 days and a lower loading rate, while the samples decorated by the In-situ method presented longer and slower release behavior. Fluorescence properties were enhanced after the gentamicin loaded. The advantage of this work is the control of the structural and optical properties of diatoms decorated with gold nanoparticles for the gentamicin drug delivery.

Significant advancements in C-N bond formationviaC-H bond functionalisation have made it a staple in the production of nitrogen-containing compounds in both industry and academia. However, transition metal-free synthesis, particularly in the case of C(sp(3))-N formation, has remained a significant challenge to the synthetic community. Herein we report a procedure for alpha-C(sp(3))-H amination of ethereal compounds through use of azodicarboxylates as the nitrogen source and freely-available atmospheric oxygen to access ethereal radical intermediatesviaaerobic C-H activation. Benzyl alcohol is a versatile reaction medium for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Its ability to act as an oxygen source gave access to metal oxide nanoparticles, while its reducing properties can be harnessed for the preparation of metals. Here we report the synthesis of Pd and PdCu nanoparticles in benzyl alcohol supplemented by a detailed mechanistic study for both systems. To elucidate the chemical formation mechanism of the Pd nanoparticles, we performed in situ attenuated total reflection ultraviolet-visible (ATR-UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), providing information on the organic as well as on the inorganic side of the reaction. Potential gaseous products were analyzed by in situ gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). We observed the formation of benzaldehyde, toluene, and dibenzyl ether as the three main organic products. The formation of the PdCu alloy nanoparticles was studied by ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). A time-resolved study of the synthesis at 100 degrees C indicated that initially three types of particles formed, composed of an alloy with high Pd content, an alloy with high content of copper, and palladium particles, and only later in the reaction course they transformed into an alloy with a Pd-to-Cu ratio close to 1. The comparability of data from active (ACT) and passive sampling (PAS) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in air is hindered by uncertainties related to the derivation of sampling rates and concentrations, as well as differences in the duration, volume and frequency of sampling. Although data from ACT have been used extensively in short-term PAS calibration studies, no attempts have been made to evaluate the comparability of long-term trends calculated from PAS to established ACT trends. This is crucial, as continuous long-term ACT is unfeasible in most regions of the world. To address these challenges, we calculated and compared trends for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at the six sites in Europe with at least 5 years of co-located ACT and PAS data (2012-2016): Birkenes, Kosetice, Pallas, Rao, Storhofoi and Zeppelin. Strong agreement of ACT and PAS trends was observed for most OCPs and PCBs. Apart from two PCBs at Storhofoi, all pairs of ACT and PAS trends followed the same direction. However, differences in the magnitude, significance and confidence intervals of their slopes were observed for some compounds and were primarily attributed to the short duration of the PAS time series. Despite some limitations, our results suggest that the comparability of ACT and PAS POP trends will continue to improve with additional years of data. This study confirms the suitability of PAS for the calculation of long-term POP trends in air, and highlights the importance of continuous sampling at established monitoring sites with consistent analytical methods.

Herein, a continuous-flow deuteration methodology for various aromatic compounds is developed based on heterogeneous platinum-catalyzed hydrogen-deuterium exchange. The reaction entails the transfer of a substrate dissolved in a mixed solvent of 2-propanol and deuterium oxide into a catalyst cartridge packed with platinum on carbon beads (Pt/CB). Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.
