Here, we report on a reproducible one-pot synthesis of high-quality and monodispersed CdS semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) by mixing precursors cadmium acetate and elemental sulfur into the new solvent system of dibenzyl ether and oleylamine without using any extra reagent or precursor activator. The NCs (5 nm) exhibited a dominant band-edge emission with a good photoluminescence quantum yield of 13.76% without trap emission. The CdS NCs were characterized using UV?Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The practical efficiency of the synthesized NCs was proved by applying the synthesized CdS NCs as the tracer in the engineering of an immunosandwich biosensor to evaluate the cardiac troponin (cTn) marker for the diagnosis and monitoring of myocardial infarction (MI). The biosensor revealed significant analytical efficiency with the limit of detection of 2 ng L-1 and the linear dynamic range of 5?1000 ng L-1, which is lower than the existing cutoff values (13?20 ng L-1). Having capitalized on the anodic stripping voltammetry method, the screen-printed biosensor could efficiently detect the cTn markers. Therefore, the biosensor is proposed to be used in clinical settings for fast, sensitive, and accurate monitoring of cTn markers.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic investigations of a new responsive-at-metal cyclometalated platinum(II) complex. With mild chemical oxidants and reductants, it was possible to obtain the same complex in three different oxidation states and each of these complexes was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We discovered that the platinum(II) complex displays strong solvatochromism in the solid state, which can be attributed to modulation of Pt…Pt interactions that results in switching between optical and photoluminescent states. Incorporating responsive-at-metal species as dynamic components in nanostructured materials might facilitate response amplification, sensing, actuation, or self-healing processes.

Several families of herbicides, especially diphenyl ether (DPE) and pyrimidinedione, target the plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathways and in particular one key enzyme, protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO). When plants are treated with DPE or pyrimidinedione, an accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, the first photosensitizer of this pathway, is observed in cytosol where it becomes very deleterious under light. Indeed these herbicides trigger plant death in two distinct ways: (i) inhibition of chlorophylls and heme syntheses and (ii) a huge accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in cytosol. Recently, a strategy based on plant transgenesis that induces deregulation of the tetrapyrrole pathway by up- or down-regulation of genes encoding enzymes, such as glutamyl-tRNA reductase, porphobilinogen deaminase and PPO, has been developed. Against all expectations, only transgenic crops overexpressing PPO showed resistance to DPE and pyrimidinedione. This herbicide resistance of transgenic crops leads to the hypothesis that the overall consumption of herbicides will be reduced as previously reported for glyphosate-resistant transgenic crops. In this review, after a rapid presentation of plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, we show how only PPO enzyme can be the target of DPE and how transgenic crops can be further resistant not only to herbicide but also to abiotic stress such as drought or chilling. Keeping in mind that this approach is mostly prohibited in Europe, we attempt to discuss it to interest the scientific community, from plant physiologists to chemists, who work on the interface of photosensitizer optimization and agriculture.

The occurrence, air-sea exchange, and gas-particle partitioning of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed during a 2015 research expedition from the East China Sea (ECS) to the open Northwest Pacific Ocean (NWP). The sum of 13 PBDEs (Sigma 13PBDEs) in air and surface seawater varied in the range of 0.54-14.5. pg m(-3) and 0.60-13.5 pg L-1, respectively, with the highest concentrations observed in the ECS. The Clausius-Clapeyron approach and air mass origin analysis indicated that continued primary emissions of PBDEs, particularly BDE-209, from East Asian sources governed the spatial variability of air PBDEs over the NWP through long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). Net air-to-seawater gas deposition of PBDEs was evidenced based on the fugacity calculation with sum fluxes of seven selected PBDEs ranging from -45 to -582 pg m(-2) d(-1). Following the substantial advection of aerosol phase BDE-209 over the ECS, dry particle deposition dominated the input pathway of PBDEs into the ECS, whereas in the open NWP, relatively free from the influence of the land emissions, fluxes in PBDE absorption and in dry particle deposition were comparable. This suggests an impact of continental outflow on the fate of atmospheric PBDEs over the NWP. Regarding gas-particle partitioning, PBDEs over the NWP were obviously absorbed into continental organic aerosols during atmospheric transport, except for BDE-209, which tended to remain within the steady state. Hierarchical SAPO-18 molecular sieve was successfully post-synthesized in the alkaline tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) solution and hydrochloride (HCl) acid solution. In the TEAOH solution, preferential dissolution occurs surrounding the defect sites in a controlled manner, leading to hierarchical SAPO-18 with wellpreserved chemical compositions and crystallinities. In acidic solution, the dissolution is revealed to be sensitive to both the defects and the chemical compositions (selective dissolution of the Si-O-Al domains), which cooperatively contribute to the generation of meso-/macropores in the crystals. The crystallization of SAPO-18 precursor is thus inferred to proceed via an oriented nanoparticle attachment mechanism in the early stage. The twinning and intergmwth of nanoparticles occur in an ordered way, leading to the oriented arrangement of the crystallite boundaries. The defects located at the intergrowth interface are prone to acid/alkaline attacks, and play crucial role in the development of hierarchical pore systems. The hierarchical SAPO-18 sample exhibits excellent catalytic reaction performance in the liquid phase benzylation reaction of benzene and benzyl alcohol.

The dependence of the selective oxidation catalytic activity of Au-Pd supported on titanate nanotubes on the catalyst preparation method has been investigated. The most active Au-Pd/Ti-NT catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol is shown to be that prepared using colloidal synthesis and immobilization with PVA as a stabilizer, which has markedly superior catalytic activity compared to catalysts prepared by deposition-precipitation, adsorption, and dry impregnation methods. Au-Pd NPs stabilized by graphene oxide sheets and immobilized on Ti-NT has also been studied and while not optimum shows promising catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by colloidal synthesis is attributed to the high metal dispersion on the external surfaces of Ti-NT, the narrow particle size distribution, and the high degree of Au-Pd alloying. This work also demonstrates that in the adsorption method of preparation using HAuCl4.3H(2)O and PdCl2 precursors, the uptake of Pd ions in solution by Ti-NT is proportional to the sodium content in Ti-NT, which implies that Na is involved in an ion-exchange reaction with Pd ions.

I found the field of Environmental Sciences & Ecology; Public, Environmental & Occupational Health very interesting. Comprehensive and updated information about polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in surface sediments from Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, is rather scarce. In this study, concentrations and profiles of 209 PCBs, 41 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,2 ‘,4,4 ‘,5,5 ‘-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), 1,2-bis(2,4,6tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were determined in sediment samples collected from the Red River and some inner-city rivers of Hanoi. Concentrations (ng/g dry weight, median and range) of pollutants decreased in the order: DBDPE (28; not detected ND – 59) approximate to PCBs (27; 1.7-50) > PBDEs (23; 0.20-61) > HBCD (1.2; ND – 5.2) > BTBPE (0.46; ND – 3.6) > BB-153 (0.004; ND – 0.014) > PBEB (ND). Pollutant levels in the inner-city river sediments were about one to two orders of magnitude higher than those measured in the Red River main stream sediments. Tri-to hexa-CBs are major homologs but detailed profiles vary between individual samples, reflecting source and/or seasonal variations. CB-11 and CB-209 were found at higher proportions in sediments than in technical PCB mixtures, suggesting their novel sources from pigments. Deca-BDE and DBDPE are the most predominant BFRs with an increasing trend predicted for DBDPE. A preliminary ecological risk assessment was conducted for these pollutants in sediments. Total PCBs and deca-BDE in a few inner-city river sediments may exhibit adverse effects on benthic organisms, but no serious risk was estimated in general.

Nanocasting is a convenient way for preparing highly porous, nanostructured soft materials. Mesoporous polymer nanocasts have been reported for over a decade, however, several aspects remain to be explored further. To do so, we report a comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of high surface area functional organic polymers and copolymers obtained by nanocasting. Divinylbenzene, styrene and chloromethyl styrene were selectively polymerized within the pores of mesoporous SBA-15 or KIT-6 silicas. Following template removal, the resulting materials were characterized. The nanocast mesoporous polymers were also modified to introduce functional groups. The success of the functionalization was assessed analytically and by model catalytic tests. The study points to the advantages of the hard templating method for structuring organic materials but also its limitations.

The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

Hydrothermal treatment of gadolinium nitrate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) afforded a new metal-organic framework compound, {[Gd-4(NDC)(6)(H2O)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O}n(1). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, therrmogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. It is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2(1)/n space group. Four crystallographically distinct Gd (III) centres are interconnected with each other through bridged carboxylato oxygen atoms and water molecules to form tetranuclear secondary building units, which are further connected through the carboxylato ligand and the network propagates along the crystallographic ac plane to form a 2D structure. Subsequent reinforcement from the remaining carboxylato oxygen atoms gives rise to a robust 3D framework structure. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is fairly stable after dehydration under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, compound 1 is capable of catalyzing the O-arylation reaction efficiently between substituted phenols and bromoarene under heterogeneous conditions at 80 degrees C to afford unsymmetrical diarylethers.
