Introduction: Gestational exposure to chemical mixtures, which is prevalent among pregnant women, may be associated with adverse childhood neurodevelopment. However, few studies have examined relations between gestational chemical mixture exposure and children’s cognitive abilities. Methods: In a cohort of 253 pregnant women and their children from Cincinnati, OH (enrolled 2003-2006), we quantified biomarker concentrations of 43 metals, phthalates, phenols, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, and environmental tobacco smoke in blood or urine. Using k-means clustering and principal component (PC) analysis, we characterized chemical mixtures among pregnant women. We assessed children’s cognitive abilities using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-III and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for ChildrenIV at ages 5 and 8 years, respectively. We estimated covariate-adjusted differences in children’s cognitive ability scores]=cross clusters, and with increasing PC scores and individual biomarker concentrations. Results: Geometric mean biomarker concentrations were generally highest, intermediate, and lowest among women in clusters 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Children born to women in clusters 1 and 2 had 5.1 (95% CI: 9.4,-0.8) and 2.0 (95% CI: 5.5, 1,4) lower performance IQ scores compared to children in cluster 3, respectively. PC scores and individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not associated with cognitive abilities. Conclusions: In this cohort, combined prenatal exposure to phenols, certain phthalates, pesticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances was inversely associated with children’s cognition, but some individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not. Additional studies should determine if the aggregate impact of these chemicals on cognition is different from their individual effects.

alpha-Diimine niobium complexes serve as catalysts for deoxygenation of benzyl ethers by silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) to cleanly give two equivalents of the corresponding benzyl chlorides, where SiCl4 has the dual function of oxygen scavenger and chloride source with the formation of a silyl ether or silica as the only byproduct. The reaction mechanism has two successive trans-etherification steps that are mediated by the niobium catalyst, first forming one equivalent of benzyl chloride along with the corresponding silyl ether intermediate that undergoes the same reaction pathway to give the second equivalent of benzyl chloride and silyl ether.

We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.

The present article describes the synthesis of a new magnetic polyacrylonitrile-based Pd catalyst involving polyacrylonitrile modified via 2-aminopyridine as an efficient support to immobilize Pd nanoparticles. The simple reusability, easy separation and high stability of this Pd complex make it an excellent candidate to generate a C-O bond via Ph-X activation which is a really important subject in achieving biologically active compounds. It is worth to note access to good and high yields as well as broad substrate scope have resulted from superior reactivity of this catalyst complex. Furthermore, the structure of the magnetic polyacrylonitrile-based heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by fourier transmission infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Also, its thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electronic waste (E-waste) recycling is a rapidly growing occupation in the USA with the potential for elevated exposure to flame retardants and metals associated with electronic devices. We previously measured polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plasma from E-waste workers and found them similar to non-E-waste workers. This study focused on structurally related PBDE derivatives, the hydroxylated (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated (MeO-PBDEs) forms along with metals known to occur in E-waste. Humans can metabolize PBDEs and some MeO-PBDEs into OH-PBDEs, which is a concern due to greater health risks associated with OH-PBDEs. We measured 32 different OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plasma samples provided by 113 volunteers living in the greater Puget Sound region of Washington State, USA. We measured 14 metals in a subset of 10 E-waste and 10 non-E-waste volunteers. Volunteers were selected based on occupational and dietary habits: work outdoors and consume above average amounts of seafood (outdoor), electronic waste recycling (E-waste) or non-specific indoor occupations (indoor). A two-week food consumption diary was obtained from each volunteer prior to blood sampling. OH-PBDEs were detected in all volunteers varying between 0.27 and 102 ng/g/g-lipid. The MeO-PBDEs were detected in most, but not all volunteers varying between n.d. 60.4 ng/g/g-lipid. E-waste recyclers had OH-PBDE and MeO-PBDE plasma levels that were similar to the indoor group. The outdoor group had significantly higher levels of MeO-PBDEs, but not OH-PBDEs. Comparison of plasma concentrations of BDE-47 with its known hydroxylated metabolites suggested OH-PBDE levels were likely determined by biotransformation and at least two subpopulations identified differing in their apparent rates of OH-PBDE formation. The metals analysis indicated no significant differences between E-waste workers and non-E-waste workers. Our results indicate E-waste workers do not have elevated plasma levels of these contaminants relative to non-E-waste workers. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aluminides, intermetallic compounds of Al with at least one additional element, are promising materials particularly for high-temperature applications due to their physical and chemical properties. They are typically prepared starting from the elements using compacted, micrometer sized powders or multilayer systems, while the application of nanoparticles as precursors is much more uncommon although the high interface area can have advantages in the reactivity of the materials. We prepared Ni aluminides starting from submicron Al particles and Ni nanoparticles applying a self-propagating reaction. Upon applying separately prepared particles multiphase products containing Ni, Ni3Al, NiAl, Ni2Al3 as well as NiAl3 were observed depending on the sample size and heating rates. The preparation of single phase NiAl was possible applying particle mixtures synthesized by a two-step protocol. In a first step, submicron Al particles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of triisobuty-laluminum. On the surface of the formed Al particles nanocrystalline Ni was deposited in a second step via thermal decomposition of bis(cycloocta-1,5-dien)nickel(0) resulting in the formation of well-mixed Ni-Al particle blends. Heating of powder compacts or loose powders under an atmosphere of Ar resulted in the formation of single phase NiAl at low as well as at high heating rates with no other intermetallic phases being present.

A silver(i)-mediated oxidative N-H/C(sp(3))-H coupling of NH-azoles with ethers has been developed. Various substrates were well N-alkylated in this methodology and the corresponding desired products were given in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the late-stage alkylation of bioactive molecules was achieved. This protocol involved C(sp(3))-N bond formation via a radical pathway generated in the presence of low cost and readily available heptafluoroisopropyl iodide (i-C3F7I). Generally, this reaction features excellent functional group compatibility, broad substrate scope, good regioselectivity, and fast access to pharmaceuticals such as SQ 22536.

The molecular aggregation of nonfullerene acceptors (NFA) can significantly affect the light absorption, charge generation, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, we demonstrate the regulation of J-aggregation of COi8DFIC NFA toward near- infrared absorption via solvent additives 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), diphenyl ether (DPE), and 1-chloronaphthalene (CN). Molecular dynamics simulations reveal preferential interaction of DIO with the alkyl side chains of COi8DFIC, endowing side-chains with the flexibility to adjust conformations to promote the formation of A-to-D type J-aggregation among the COi8DFIC backbone, resulting in a significant red-shift of absorbance toward the near-infrared region. The enhanced J-aggregation via pi-pi stacking, evidenced by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, constructs three-dimensional charge transport channels at the molecular level to facilitate charge transport. The presence of 0.5 vol % DIO molecules, which is most effective among all three additives, boosts the maximum achievable PCE of CF cast PTB7-Th:COi8DFIC OSCs from 8.5% to 12.9%. Our results provide a new concept to enhance the efficiency of OSCs via dedicated control of molecular aggregations of nonfullerene acceptors.

The comprehensive identification of organic species existing in indoor environments is a key issue to understand their impact in human health. This study proposes the analysis of condensed water samples, collected with portable dehumidifiers, to characterize semi-volatile compounds in the gas phase of confined areas. Water samples are concentrated by solid-phase extraction (SPE). The obtained extracts are analysed by gas chromatography (GC) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), following a nontarget screening data mining approach. In first term, spectra of deconvoluted compounds are compared with those in NIST low resolution library; thereafter, tentative identifications are verified using an inhouse database of accurate electron ionization (EI) MS spectra. Chromatographic (retention index) and spectral data are combined for unambiguous species identification. The potential of condensed water samples to reflect changes in the composition of indoor atmospheres, the match between data obtained using different dehumidifiers, and the relative concentration efficiency of condensed water compared to that attained by active sampling of moderate air volumes are discussed. A total of 141 semi-volatile compounds were identified (98 confirmed against authentic standards) in a set of 21 samples obtained from different homes and working places. This list contains more than 40 fragrances (including several potential allergens), solvents and intermediates in the production of polymeric materials, plasticizers and flame retardants.
