A porous organic polymer (POL-dppe) was synthesized and employed as a heterogeneous ligand for selective hydroacylation of alkynes. The polymer shows high linear selectivity and catalytic efficiency toward a broad range of alkynes and beta-S substituted aldehydes. Owing to the confinement effect of the microporous structure, POL-dppe was far superior to the monomeric dppe ligand in controlling the selectivity of electron-deficient alkynes. The use of a porous organic polymer as a regioselective and efficient ligand in hydroacylation is reported for the first time.

A novel interzeolite transformation strategy using internally confined organic structure directing agents (OSDAs), called the OSDA-confined strategy, is proposed for highly crystalline nanosized high-silica ZSM-5 zeolite synthesis, by which high yield and fast synthesis of ZSM-5 is achieved using BEA zeolite as a raw material. The transformation process was investigated by XRD, SEM, ICP, FTIR and UV Raman spectroscopy, which revealed that the decomposition of a parent zeolite and the crystallization process of products were well modulated by the confined OSDA. The transformation process could be divided into three stages consisting of raw material deconstruction, small size product formation and product growth. The strong etching power of NaOH contributes to the fast decomposition of BEA zeolites. In addition, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as an OSDA was confined in the parent zeolite instead of being added into the mother liquid, achieving a high local concentration of TPAOH, which could reduce the decomposition rate of the parent BEA zeolite and promote the efficient organization of the building units generated by the decomposition of the BEA zeolite. Thereof, a high yield was achieved by the synergistic effect of NaOH and occluded TPAOH. During the interzeolite transformation process, the six-membered rings (6Rs), five-membered rings (5Rs) and four-membered rings (4Rs) in the BEA zeolite framework were disassembled and combined with the help of 5Rs to produce the ZSM-5 zeolite structure. Moreover, due to the nanoscale and large surface area, the obtained ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst showed extremely high catalytic activity in the self-etherification reaction of benzyl alcohol (BA) to dibenzyl ether (DE). This study provides insights into the interzeolite transformation process, which would be helpful for achieving size control and high-efficiency synthesis.

Ionic liquids have demonstrated to be promising solvents for processing coal and biomass. Aiming to exploit ionic liquids (ILs) as media for degradation of coal, diphenylmethane (DPM), diphenyl ether (DPE), and diphenyl ketone (DPK) were used as coal-related compounds to study the degradation behaviors of weak-bond structures of coal in ionic liquids in this work. It was found that 1-sulfonic acid butyl-3-methylimidazolium 14 trifluoromethanesulfonate ([B(SO3H)mim]OTf), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim]Ac) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim] Cl) have a significant effect on the thermal dissociation of the model compounds. [B(SO3H) mim] OTf has a significant effect on the cleavage of DPM and DPK. [Bmim] Cl promotes the cleavage of the DPE. The dissociation effect of the model compound under the action of ionic liquid increases with the increase of reaction temperature. The interaction between the oxygen-containing functional groups in the model compound promotes the respective thermal dissociation of the model compounds. Ionic liquids promote the dissociation interaction of bridge bonds in model compounds. Under the action of ionic liquids, the carbonyl bond promotes the cleavage of the methylene and ether bond cleavage, and the ether bond promotes the methylene bond cleavage.

Several families of herbicides, especially diphenyl ether (DPE) and pyrimidinedione, target the plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathways and in particular one key enzyme, protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO). When plants are treated with DPE or pyrimidinedione, an accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, the first photosensitizer of this pathway, is observed in cytosol where it becomes very deleterious under light. Indeed these herbicides trigger plant death in two distinct ways: (i) inhibition of chlorophylls and heme syntheses and (ii) a huge accumulation of protoporphyrin IX in cytosol. Recently, a strategy based on plant transgenesis that induces deregulation of the tetrapyrrole pathway by up- or down-regulation of genes encoding enzymes, such as glutamyl-tRNA reductase, porphobilinogen deaminase and PPO, has been developed. Against all expectations, only transgenic crops overexpressing PPO showed resistance to DPE and pyrimidinedione. This herbicide resistance of transgenic crops leads to the hypothesis that the overall consumption of herbicides will be reduced as previously reported for glyphosate-resistant transgenic crops. In this review, after a rapid presentation of plant tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, we show how only PPO enzyme can be the target of DPE and how transgenic crops can be further resistant not only to herbicide but also to abiotic stress such as drought or chilling. Keeping in mind that this approach is mostly prohibited in Europe, we attempt to discuss it to interest the scientific community, from plant physiologists to chemists, who work on the interface of photosensitizer optimization and agriculture.

This study aimed to predict skin sensitization potency of selected chemicals by quantitatively analyzing their physicochemical properties by employing quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) and quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) approaches as alternative risk assessment methods to animal testing. Correlations between effective concentration for a stimulation index of 3 (EC3) (%), the amount of a chemical required to elicit a threefold increase in lymph node cell proliferative activity (stimulation index, >= 3), were calculated using local lymph node assay (LLNA) and physicochemical properties of 212 skin sensitizers and 38 non-sensitizers were investigated. The correlation coefficients between melting point (MP) and EC3 and between surface tension (ST) and EC3 were 0.65 and 0.69, respectively. The correlation coefficient for MP + ST and EC3 was estimated to be 0.72. Thus, correlation coefficients between EC3 and MP, ST, and MP + ST reliably predicted the skin sensitization potential of the chemicals with sensitivities of 72% (126/175), 70% (122/174), and 73% (116/158); specificities of 77% (27/35), 69% (22/32), and 81% (26/32); and accuracies of 73% (153/210), 70% (144/206), and 75% (142/190), respectively. Our findings suggest that the EC3 value may be more accurately predicted using the ST values of chemicals as opposed to MP values. Thus, information on MP and ST parameters of chemicals might be useful for predicting the EC3 values as not only an alternative approach to animal testing, but as a risk assessment method for skin sensitization.

Herein, a light and magnetism dual stimuli-responsive composite (SR-Fe3O4@AMEO@SP) was designed and synthesized, by assembling the light sensitive spiropyran (SP) with magnetism responsive SR-Fe3O4 particle. The resultant composite was characterized in detail and light/magnetism-triggered, structural and functional responses of it were evaluated systematically. Such solid-composite exerted sensitive to light stimulus properly attributing to the rough and uneven nature of SR-Fe3O4 surface, which provided a large interspace for SP conformational transformation. A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Raising the capability of supporting and suppressing the leaching possibility to a very insignificant level has still remained challenging for some class of transition metals, i.e. Ni2+. Here we present the covalent functionalisalon of macrocyclic ligand, 4,13-diaza-18-crown-6 (kryptofix 22), on the surface of carbon nanotube (CNT), leading to a unique adsorptive capability for supporting Ni2+. This material was incorporated as a promising catalyst in coupling reactions including C-C, CN, and CO- – cross-coupling reactions. We demonstrate that the kryptofix 22 functionalisation on the surface of CNT has a key role in the enhancement of the adsorption capability Ni2+ and subsequent catalytic activity. We further prove that this ligand causes a significant boost in the recyclability of the reactions due to the extremely trivial Ni2+ leaching from the CNT’s surface during the reactions.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) methodology, proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece (WFD-MEEG), and the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) are comparatively applied to evaluate the chemical status of a major transboundary river. Water quality parameters were monitored at 11 sites along the main stream of the river and its main tributaries, and at five sites in the reservoirs, on a monthly frequency, in the period from May 2008 to May 2009. Water temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) were measured in-situ, while water samples were collected for the determination of total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrite-, nitrate- and ammonium-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphates (OP), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The water samples were also analyzed for the determination of seven heavy metals (i.e., Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn) and 33 priority substances, as listed in Annex II of EU Directive 2008/105/EC. The results showed that the physicochemical parameters (i.e., T. DO, pH, EC, inorganic nitrogen, MN, OP, TP, TSS, and Chia) were within the natural range. The mean concentration of the measured heavy metals did not exceed the limits set by WHO (2003, 2017) for drinking water. Regarding the priority substances, some of them ( i.e., anthracene, fluoranthene, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were measured in various stations at higher concentrations than the Annual Average Environmental Quality Standards (AA-EQS). Based on the WFD-MEEG methodology, the river water was in the ‘good’ quality class, while according to CCME-WQI the river quality ranged from ‘marginal’ to ‘good’ category.
