The Water Framework Directive (WFD) methodology, proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece (WFD-MEEG), and the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) are comparatively applied to evaluate the chemical status of a major transboundary river. Water quality parameters were monitored at 11 sites along the main stream of the river and its main tributaries, and at five sites in the reservoirs, on a monthly frequency, in the period from May 2008 to May 2009. Water temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) were measured in-situ, while water samples were collected for the determination of total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrite-, nitrate- and ammonium-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphates (OP), total phosphorus (TP), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The water samples were also analyzed for the determination of seven heavy metals (i.e., Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn) and 33 priority substances, as listed in Annex II of EU Directive 2008/105/EC. The results showed that the physicochemical parameters (i.e., T. DO, pH, EC, inorganic nitrogen, MN, OP, TP, TSS, and Chia) were within the natural range. The mean concentration of the measured heavy metals did not exceed the limits set by WHO (2003, 2017) for drinking water. Regarding the priority substances, some of them ( i.e., anthracene, fluoranthene, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were measured in various stations at higher concentrations than the Annual Average Environmental Quality Standards (AA-EQS). Based on the WFD-MEEG methodology, the river water was in the ‘good’ quality class, while according to CCME-WQI the river quality ranged from ‘marginal’ to ‘good’ category. Unsupported nanoporous gold (AuNPore) is a highly efficient, practically applicable, and recyclable catalyst for hydrodebromination of aromatic bromides. The AuNPore-catalyzed hydrodebromination of aromatic bromides proceeded smoothly at relatively low hydrogen pressure and temperature to achieve good to excellent yields of the corresponding non-bromine variants. Phenol and its derivatives, which naturally occur in lignocellulose, can be considered as a renewable feedstock not only for aromatic, but also for alicyclic compounds, such as primary and N-substituted cyclohexylamines. So far, the latter are mostly produced from non-renewable starting materials like benzene via problematic nitration/reduction or cross-coupling routes. Herein, an efficient reductive amination of phenol with ammonia or amines is demonstrated, for the first time without the need for rare and expensive noble metals and without using any additives. Various supported Ni catalysts were screened and we elucidated the influence of the key parameters, including the acid-base properties of the supporting material. Acquired knowledge was then applied to different phenol-ammonia/amine combinations, resulting in the synthesis of various primary, secondary and tertiary cyclohexylamines in fair to very high yields.

Purpose: To describe factors (demographics and clinical characteristics) that predict patients who are at an increased risk of adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following discharge direct to home (DDH) from intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Prospective cohort study of all adult patients who survived their stay in our medical-surgical-trauma ICU between February 2016 and 2017 and were discharged directly home. Patients were followed for 8 weeks postdischarge. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following DDH from ICU. Results: A total of 129 DDH patients were enrolled and completed the 8-week follow-up. We identified 39 unplanned return visits (URVs). There was 0% mortality at 8 weeks postdischarge. Eight potential predictors of hospital URVs (P< .2) were identified in the univariable analysis: prior substance abuse (odds ratio [OR] of URV of 2.50 [95% confidence interval: 1.08-5.80], hepatitis (OR: 6.92 [1.68-28.48]), sepsis (OR: 11.03 [1.19-102.29]), admission nine equivalents of nursing manpower score (NEMS) <24 (OR: 2.28 [1.03-5.04], no fixed address (OR: 22.9 [1.2-437.3]), ICU length of stay (LOS) <2 days (OR: 2.95 [1.28-6.78]), home discharge within London, Ontario (OR: 2.44 [1.00-5.92]), and left against medical advice (AMA; OR: 6.06 [2.04-17.98]). Conclusions: Our study identified 8 covariates that were potential predictors of URV: prior substance abuse, hepatitis, sepsis, admission NEMS <24, no fixed address, ICU LOS <2 days, home discharge within London, Ontario, and left AMA. Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.

In this work, 1,4-diphenyltriphenylene-grafted (14.2%) polysiloxane (DPTP) was successfully synthesized and statically coated on capillary columns as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The DPTP columns exhibited excellent efficiencies of 3646 plates m(-1) for a 30 m column and 3125 plates m(-1) for a 10 m column, as evidenced by naphthalene measurements at 120 degrees C, which demonstrated the good film-forming ability of DPTP. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the weight of DPTP is reduced by 2% at 380 degrees C. Separation of the polyethylene pyrolysis product indicated that the maximum allowable operating temperature of the DPTP column is 360 degrees C. The moderate polarity of the DPTP column was investigated in terms of McReynolds constants. The DPTP column was utilized to separate analytes, including aromatic isomers, fatty acid esters, ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, on the basis of the column’s strong pi-pi stacking, dipole-induced dipole, and dispersion interactions with solutes. In general, the DPTP column offers great potential as a novel stationary phase for separating various analytes due to its special structure and remarkable separation performance.

The liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are promising materials for hydrogen storage. The standard molar enthalpies of formation, Delta H-f(m)o (liq/cr) of diphenyl ether substituted with methyl, methoxy, and hydroxyl substituents were measured by the high-precision combustion calorimetry. Enthalpies of vaporization/sublimation Delta(g)(l,cr) H-o(m) (298.15 K) of these compounds were obtained by the transpiration method. Enthalpies of fusion of 2- and 4-hydroxy-diphenyl ether were measured by differential scanning calorimeter. Gas-phase enthalpies of formation Delta H-f(o)m (g, 298.15 K) of substituted diphenyl ethers calculated by the G4 method were in an excellent agreement with the experimental results. Enthalpies of the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions of diphenyl ether derivatives were estimated and compared with the data available for other potential LOHC. A set of thermodynamic properties of diphenyl ether derivatives of benchmark quality was recommended for thermochemical calculations. Equilibrium temperatures of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation processes were calculated and compared with those of benzene derivatives. Because of their high hydrogen storage capacity, as well as very low volatility, these compounds could be considered as seminal candidates for LOHC.

Lignin is constructed from methoxylated phenylpropanoid with plenty of hydroxys and methoxys. Its conversion to valuable products is extremely attractive but especially challenging without additional hydrogen sources. Herein we report a hydrogen-free production of 4-alkylphenols directly from native lignin via self-reforming-driven depolymerization and hydrogenolysis over Pt/NiAl2O4. This is the first example of acquiring 4-alkylphenols from native lignin. Using this strategy, high yields of 4-alkylphenols, 17.3 wt %, were obtained from birch lignin. Reaction pathway and mechanism studies revealed that this strategy initiates from the reforming of aliphatic hydroxys, followed by the cleavage of C-O linkages, and ends via demethoxylation over Pt/NiAl2O4. Moreover, the subsequent aqueous phase reforming of the as-formed methanol accelerates the whole process. This strategy realizes the one-pot production of 4-alkylphenols from lignin by fully utilizing the structural hydrogen in lignin and H2O, providing a low-cost and safe method of lignin valorization.

An efficient bifunctional NbOPO4 supported Ru catalyst (Ru-NbOPO4) was applied to the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols and the upgrading of bio-oil. Characterization results revealed that the Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst possessed strong acidity, including Lewis and Bronsted acids. The Lewis acid sites originated from the Nb-O bonding structures, including slightly distorted octahedral NbO6, regular tetrahedral NbO4 and highly distorted octahedral NbO6. In combination with the strong acidity of the Nb-O species and excellent hydrogenation activity of the metallic Ru, the bifunctional Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols with different structures, and even real bio-oil to alkanes. The hydrocarbon yield after real bio-oil upgradation was up to 88.2 %. Carbon deposition and enlargement of the Ru nanoparticles resulted in slight deactivation of the catalyst. The catalytic activity could be mostly recovered after being calcined and reduced.

WAXD and FTIR characterizations show that, for all considered conditions, NC alpha-phases after guest sorption/desorption remain unaltered. NC beta-phases, on the contrary, after alpha-guest sorption can be transformed in co-crystalline (CC) alpha-phases that after guest desorption are transformed in NC alpha-phases. All conducted experiments also show that possible planar orientations of NC films (c//or c perpendicular to orientations) remain essentially unaltered, after sorption of all considered guest molecules. The presently discovered beta ->alpha transition constitutes a route to obtain unoriented alpha-form films, which till now were not available by known preparation procedures.
