Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment, but little information is available about the bioaccumulation of HFRs in mangrove plants. In this study, three mangrove plant species were collected from Futian National Nature Reserve of Shenzhen City, South China to investigate the bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and several alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs), including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), tetrabromop-xylene (pTBX), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and dechlorane plus (DP). The mean concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, BTBPE, pTBX, PBT, PBEB, HBB and DP in mangrove plant species were 2010,1870, 36.2,18.7, 40.1,17.8, 9.68 and 120 pg g(-1) dry weight, respectively. PBDEs were the dominant HFRs in mangrove plant tissues, followed by DBDPE. The relative abundance of BDE 209 in three mangrove plant tissues were much lower than those in sediments. Significant negative relationships between log root bioaccumulation factors and log K-ow and between log TFr-s (from root to stem) and log K-ow were observed, indicating that HFRs with low hydrophobicity were easily absorbed by mangrove roots and stems. A positive correlation between log TFs-1 (from stem to leaf) and log K-ow were found, suggesting that air-leaf exchange may occur in mangrove plants. This study highlights the uptake of HFRs by mangrove plants, which can be used as remediation for HFRs contamination in the environment. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKs) represent an industrially important class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics with excellent physicochemical and mechanical properties, and the synthesis of PAEKs with enhanced glass transition temperatures (T-g) and moderate melting temperatures (T-m) is highly desirable. In the work reported, novel poly(ether ketone ketone)s (PEKKs) containing 1,4-naphthylene units in main chains were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts solution copolycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride with a mixture of diphenyl ether and 1,4-di(4-phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene (1,4-DPOBN). The polymerization proceeded smoothly in 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and N-methylpyrrolidone under mild conditions and afforded polymers having inherent viscosities of 0.66-0.98 dL g(-1). The polymers with 5-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN are semicrystalline and have obviously enhanced T-g over commercial poly(ether ether ketone)s and PEKKs due to the incorporation of rigid and bulky 1,4-naphthylene moieties into the main chain. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN not only have high T-g of 175-177 degrees C, but also relatively low T-m of 331-336 degrees C, having high potential for melt processing. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN also exhibit excellent thermal stability and good mechanical and solvent-resistance properties. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

Large area processing of organic photovoltaic cells and modules is a key step towards commercialization. At the same time, the scale-up of fabrication entails careful evaluation and selection of solvents, and optimization of processing parameters. It has been proven that using proper processing additives in polymer:PCBM bulk-heterojunction solution is one of the most effective strategies to improve the performance of organic photovoltaic cells. Here we report a new transition solvent strategy of using non-halogenated solvents to fabricate PDTSTPD: PC71BM based active layers. This strategy uses a combination of miscible good main solvent such as 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and coadditives such as diphenyl ether (DPE) and 1-methylnaphtalene (MeN) for middle molecular weight PDTSTPD, or 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and MeN for high molecular weight PDTSTPD to tune the nano-scale morphology of the active layer during the film drying process. Inverted organic photovoltaic cells with an active area of 1cm(2) on PET substrate fabricated by a blade coating process using the formulated ink have demonstrated a power conversion efficiency up to 5 %.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure and two different morphologies (nanospheres and nanoprisms) were synthesized by a facile one-step method. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanospheres and nanoprisms were monocrystalline and separable in a magnetic field. In different volume ratios of oleylamine (OAm) to dibenzyl ether, the sizes of the prepared Fe3O4 NPs ranged from 5 to 21 nm. The OAm amount in the synthesis can significantly control the morphology of Fe3O4 NPs. As the OAm content increased from 10 ml to 30 ml, the faceted nanoprisms shrank while the nanospheres enlarged. At an OAm content of 25 ml, the nanoprisms diminished while more hexagonal and sphere-like particles appeared, implying a critical point of morphology transition from triangle to hexagon. The magnetic properties also depended on the NP morphology and size. The prepared Fe3O4 NPs are promising candidates in medical applications such as magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery, blood purification, and tumor hyperthermia.

This research presents the assessment of seasonal variation, accumulation pattern and ecological risk of selected endocrine disrupting compounds (S-EDCs) in sediment samples covering six sites in KimNguu river, Hanoi, Northern area of Vietnam. Selected EDCs compose polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Sediment sampling was carried out in dry season (April) and wet season (October) in 2018. Results pointed out a significant contamination with n-ary sumation (6)PCBs, n-ary sumation (16)PAHs and n-ary sumation 7PBDE concentrations ranging from 4.73 to 36.34 ng g(-1) dw, from 3.57 to 84.39 ng g(-1) dw and from 4.49 to 12.49 ng g(-1) dw, respectively. Composition analyses indicated the predominance of PCB 138, PCB 153, M-PAHs (Middle molecular weight PAHs: BaA, Chr, Pyr, Flt), BDE-47, BDE-99 and BDE-209. The values of TEQ(DL-PCBs), TEQ (n-ary sumation 8PAHs) and TEQ (n-ary sumation 16PAHs) range from 4.6 to 10.4 ng kg(-1) dw, from 0.28 to 1.28 ng g(-1) dw and from 0.29 to 1.38 ng g(-1) dw, respectively. Ecological risks of S-EDCs range from very low to medium levels in the sediment of KimNguu river.

Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Sigma 9PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Sigma(16)PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Here, we have successfully synthesised and purified multifunctional PLGA-based nanoparticles by the co-encapsulation of an anticancer drug (tetrandrine) and a magnetic material (Fe3O4). The obtained Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs had a uniform spherical shape with a particle size of approximately 199nm and a negative surface charge of -18.0mV, displaying a high encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, TEM studies provided representative images of the purification process of the magnetic nanoparticles with MACS((R)) technology. The MFM and VSM results indicated that both the Fe3O4 NPs and Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs were superparamagnetic. The DSC spectrum demonstrated that Tet was successfully encapsulated within the PLGA-based nanoparticles. Significantly, the release studies revealed NPs had a relatively slower release rate than free Tet after 8h’s initial burst release, which had decreased from 98% to 65% after 24h. In vitro cellular studies revealed that NPs could effectively penetrate into A549 cells and A549 multicellular spheroids to exert cytotoxicity, displaying a significantly high anti-proliferation effect. Moreover, western blot demonstrated that the co-loaded NPs had a higher anticancer activity by injuring lysosomes to activate the mitochondria pathway and induce A549 cell apoptosis. The magnetic characteristics and high anticancer activity support the use of Tet/Fe3O4 co-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles as a promising strategy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived lignin sources is highly important for the conversion of renewable biomass resources to biofuels. However, lots of developed catalysts suffer from the drawbacks of expensive precious metal catalysts and/or operation under harsh conditions. In the present work, Co-Ni bimetallic catalysts were prepared and applied in catalyzing hydrogenolysis of C-aryl-O aromatic ethers with high activities under the promotion of Nb2C MXene additive. Especially, the hydrogenolysis of diphenyl ether (DPE), a 4-O-5 model compound, to cyclohexane (cy) and cyclohexyl alcohol (cy-ol) could be achieved over the Co2Ni1Ox-Nb2C MXene catalytic system at 120 degrees C and under 5 bar of H-2, which are mild conditions in comparison with those for the developed heterogeneous precious-metal-free catalysts. The excellent catalytic performances stemmed from the strong interaction between Co and Ni species and the promotion of Lewis acidic sites offered by Nb2C MXene. The proposed reaction pathway involved the direct hydrogenolysis of DPE route, in which DPE was initially hydrogenolyzed to benzene and phenol. They were further hydrogenated to cy and cy-ol. The present work not only develops a noble-metal-free bimetallic catalyst for utilization of biomass-derived lignin sources, but also provides a novel strategy for using the Nb2C MXene material.
