Lignin is constructed from methoxylated phenylpropanoid with plenty of hydroxys and methoxys. Its conversion to valuable products is extremely attractive but especially challenging without additional hydrogen sources. Herein we report a hydrogen-free production of 4-alkylphenols directly from native lignin via self-reforming-driven depolymerization and hydrogenolysis over Pt/NiAl2O4. This is the first example of acquiring 4-alkylphenols from native lignin. Using this strategy, high yields of 4-alkylphenols, 17.3 wt %, were obtained from birch lignin. Reaction pathway and mechanism studies revealed that this strategy initiates from the reforming of aliphatic hydroxys, followed by the cleavage of C-O linkages, and ends via demethoxylation over Pt/NiAl2O4. Moreover, the subsequent aqueous phase reforming of the as-formed methanol accelerates the whole process. This strategy realizes the one-pot production of 4-alkylphenols from lignin by fully utilizing the structural hydrogen in lignin and H2O, providing a low-cost and safe method of lignin valorization.

The comprehensive identification of organic species existing in indoor environments is a key issue to understand their impact in human health. This study proposes the analysis of condensed water samples, collected with portable dehumidifiers, to characterize semi-volatile compounds in the gas phase of confined areas. Water samples are concentrated by solid-phase extraction (SPE). The obtained extracts are analysed by gas chromatography (GC) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), following a nontarget screening data mining approach. In first term, spectra of deconvoluted compounds are compared with those in NIST low resolution library; thereafter, tentative identifications are verified using an inhouse database of accurate electron ionization (EI) MS spectra. Chromatographic (retention index) and spectral data are combined for unambiguous species identification. The potential of condensed water samples to reflect changes in the composition of indoor atmospheres, the match between data obtained using different dehumidifiers, and the relative concentration efficiency of condensed water compared to that attained by active sampling of moderate air volumes are discussed. A total of 141 semi-volatile compounds were identified (98 confirmed against authentic standards) in a set of 21 samples obtained from different homes and working places. This list contains more than 40 fragrances (including several potential allergens), solvents and intermediates in the production of polymeric materials, plasticizers and flame retardants. We report on a detailed multi-spectroscopic analysis of the structures and internal dynamics of diphenylether and its aggregates with up to three water molecules by employing molecular beam experiments. The application of stimulated Raman/UV and IR/UV double resonance methods as well as chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in combination with quantum-chemical computations yield the energetically preferred monomer and cluster geometries. Furthermore, the complex internal dynamics of the diphenylether monomer and the one-water clusters are analysed. In the cluster with three water molecules, water forms a cyclic structure similar to the isolated water trimer. The interactions ruling the structures of the higher-order water clusters are a combination of the ones identified for the two monohydrate isomers, with dispersion being a decisive contribution for systems that have a delicate energetic balance between different hydrogen-bonded arrangements of similar energy.

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) activation has found to ameliorate diabetes in animal models. However, no CAR agonists are available clinically. Therefore, a safe and effective CAR activator would be an alternative option. In this study, sixty courmarin derivatives either synthesized or purified from Artemisia capillaris were screened for CAR activation activity. Chemical modifications were on position 5,6,7,8 with mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-substitutions. Among all the compounds subjected for in vitro CAR activation screening, 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin was the most effective and was selected for further preclinical studies. Chemical modification on the 6 position and unsaturated chains were generally beneficial. Electron-withdrawn groups as well as long unsaturated chains were hazardous to the activity. Mechanism of action studies showed that CAR activation of 6,7-diprenoxycoumarin might be through the inhibition of EGFR signaling and upregulating PP2Ac methylation. To sum up, modification mimicking natural occurring coumarins shed light on CAR studies and the established screening system provides a rapid method for the discovery and development of CAR activators. In addition, one CAR activator, scoparone, did showed anti-diabetes effect in db/db mice without elevation of insulin levels.

The occurrence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere of six sites with different emission sources in the province of Cordoba, Argentina, was analyzed. The sites included urban, industrial, agricultural, and mountain areas. Samples were collected using passive air samplers (PAS) consisting of polyurethane foam disks (PUF). Samples were analyzed for 12 PAHs, 31 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 12 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of PAHs in the atmosphere were elevated at urban sites and were even higher at the industrial site. With respect to OCPs, it was observed that the concentrations of endosulfan were greater at the agricultural site (AGR) (416 +/- 4pgm(-3)). For hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), only the alpha isomer was detected and there were minimal differences between the different sampling sites (5.9-13.3pgm(-3)). In the case of dieldrin, the highest concentrations (33.6pgm(-3)) were found at the mountain site, which may have been due to its use for insect control. Although heptachlor epoxide was not detected, the concentration of heptachlor was significantly higher at the agricultural and downtown sites (approximate to 3.6pgm(-3)). Regarding DDTs, the isomers p,p-DDT and p,p-DDE showed the highest concentrations at the mountain site (sigma DDT 120 +/- 12pgm(-3)) and downtown site (sigma DDT 157 +/- 62pgm(-3)). The relationship between the isomers suggested that at the downtown site, the contribution of this pesticide to the environment was recent, probably for the control of diseases vectors. The congener pattern of PBDEs was dominated by BDE-47, and BDE-99 at all sites, with the downtown site having the highest concentrations of compound esters (sigma PBDEs 118 +/- 38pgm(-3)). Finally, high concentrations of PCBs were found at the industrial site (sigma PCBs 1677 +/- 134pgm(-3)), and the predominating homologs were 5-Cl and 6-Cl, in contrast to the other sites where PCBs were dominated by 3-Cl and 4-Cl. This is the first study of POPs carried out in the province of Cordoba.

In this study, the influence of grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) was studied on citric acid and zinc oxide incorporated cellulose-based hydrogel films. The effect of GFSE (0.25-1.0%, v/v) on hydrogel films was examined for their physico-chemical, mechanical, thermal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The swelling ratio, tensile strength and thermal stability of films decreased with increase in GFSE concentrations. On the other hand, elongation (%) and antioxidant activity of films were found to be 34-60% and 25-79%, respectively for increasing amounts of GFSE. FESEM and FETEM clearly showed that two different types of nanoparticles (50-90 nm and 5-10 nm) were present in GFSE incorporated films. The release of polyphenolic compounds and zinc from films was in sustained manner. Furthermore, the fabricated hydrogel films exhibited antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. All these results indicate that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel films could find their potential applications in wound healing.

Addition of DMSO is found to greatly accelerate the aqueous hydrolysis of organohalides to alcohols, providing a neutral, more efficient, milder and more economic process. Mechanistic studies using O-18-DMSO and O-18-H2O showed that, contrary to the opinion that DMSO works as a dipolar solvent to enhance water’s nucleophilicity, the accelerating effect comes from a complete oxygen transfer from DMSO to organohalides through generation of ROS+Me2.X- salts through C-O bond formation, followed by O-S bond disassociative hydrolysis of ROS+Me2.X- with water. This method is applicable to a wide range of organohalides and thus may have potential for practical industrial application, owing to easy recovery of DMSO from the H2O/DMSO mixture by regular vacuum rectification.

Aim: Superparamagnetic cubic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were synthesized and functionalized with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as a potential agent for cancer treatment. Methods: Monodisperse cubic IONPs with a high value of saturation magnetization were synthesized by thermal decomposition method and functionalized with DMSA via ligand exchange reaction, and their cytotoxic effects on HeLa cells were investigated. Results: DMSA functionalized cubic IONPs with an edge length of 24.5 +/- 1.9 nm had a specific absorption rate value of 197.4 W/g(Fe) (15.95 kA/m and 488 kHz) and showed slight cytotoxicity on HeLa cells when incubated with 3.3 x 10(10), 6.6 x 10(10) and 9.9 x 10(10) NP/mL for 24, 48 and 72 h. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate both the cytotoxic effects of DMSA-coated cubic IONPs on HeLa cells and hyperthermia performance of these nanoparticles.

Background and Aims: Robust evidence regarding the impact of disease activity on pregnancy outcomes in women with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is crucial for both clinicians and patients in preparing a birth plan. We sought to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the pooled influences of disease activity on pregnancy outcomes in women with IBD. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and the COCHRANE library to identify articles comparing pregnancy outcomes between active and inactive IBD at the time of conception or during pregnancy. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to pool estimates and report odds ratios [ORs]. Results: A total of 28 studies were identified as eligible for the meta-analysis. In women with active IBD, the pooled ORs for low birth weight [LBW], preterm birth, small for gestational age [SGA], spontaneous abortion and stillbirths were respectively 3.81 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.81-8.02), 2.42 [95% CI 1.74-3.35], 1.48 [95% CI 1.19-1.85], 1.87 [95% CI 1.17-3.0] and 2.27 [95% CI 1.03-5.04] compared to women with inactive IBD. In the subgroup analysis based on disease type, women with active ulcerative colitis had an increased risk of LBW, preterm birth and spontaneous abortion. Women with active Crohn’s disease had a higher risk of preterm birth, SGA and spontaneous abortion. Conclusions: Active IBD during the periconception period and pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Our data suggest that pregnancy should be planned when the disease is quiescent, and continuous disease control is important even during pregnancy.

A direct comparison of bulk heterojunction active layers processed from halogenated and non-halogenated solvent/additive systems was made. Use of the solvent 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) and the solvent additive 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) led to best power conversion efficiency of ca. 2.5%. Photovoltaic devices had high open circuit voltages upwards of 1.12 V, representing one of the highest for perylene diimide based systems. The active layer morphology and subsequent device performance was insensitive to the nature and volume of solvent additive used for processing and type of coating method (spin vs slot-die) making for a robust bulk heterojunction for large area organic solar cell applications.
